  i enjoyed englishman's post about americans vs europeans.

  i chose to start a new thread because i want to take the topic in another direction.. the usa is still a young nation and an enigma.

  the nation was created by european settlers who wanted to get away from things they did not like about europe, especially religious intolerance and inflexible governments, and have the opportunity to build a new future.

  Thanks for the post Amazing. I've been thinking about this subject a bit since it was posted in the other thread. I too have met a few Americans visitors and found most of them to be really nice people.

  The other thread has had me thinking about the role that exposure played a major role in how we view other nations. I have found that expanding knowledge tends to help increase tolerance of other viewpoints. When you said

  it reflected a conclusion I had come to some time ago- JWs live in a closed community and are thus very limited in their exposure to other peoples, increasing intolerance levels, IMHO. Most of my friends are uni grads and tend to be interested in what is happening in the world, and thus make an effort to find out. I find these people to be more accepting of people for who they are, not what nation they are from.

  I have been lucky enough to live in three different countries, and enjoyed every one of them. It would be wonderful if we could enjoy the differences of the people on this board.

  Position on College Changed?

  several have made outright statements and others have suggested that the society's negative position on higher education has changed.

  'the society does not discourage higher education where i live.

  ' worse, 'apostates have made it all up--the society has never discouraged education.

  I also went back to study and eventually got a degree. It doesn't do me that much good, I'd make more money doing what I did before. But the journey of learning is wonderful just for its own sake. One thing the Borg did teach that I found helpful was the ability to study. Like the others, I say go for it, it is really worth it.

  A short statement on the long shift

  as a sit writing this i will say that i am possibly going through one of the toughest times of my life right now.

  i have recently told the elders of my congregation that i have identified myself as "queer" and it has been one of the toughest roads i have ever had to walk.

  i am not trying to offend anyone on the boards by telling you this but i feel that it's important to live honestly and my decission to "come out" to people in the congregation is one based on trying to live honestly.

  I couldn't help but compare you with the men who were "helping" you, and I would have to agree with you. A person who is being honest about themselves is certainly more functional than people who delude themselves and think that helping is the same thing as hounding, IMHO.

  I just wanted to add my support.

  I was df'ed, which is some ways is easier than the slow drifting away, at least for me. I didn't have to pretend over an extended period of time, that would be so very hard. You must be a strong and compassionate person.

  If it is of any help to hear, I no longer have any family left in the org. The last of them left only a very short time ago.

  Theif gets 200yrs......only in the USA!

  yeah 200 yrs sounds a tad excessive..................but things are bigger and better in the us.....i guess it works for sentences as well.. sacramento, calif. (ap) -- a man who used tiger woods' identity to steal $17,000 worth of goods was sentenced to 200 years-to-life in prison.

  anthony lemar taylor was convicted of falsely obtaining a driver's license using the name eldrick t. woods, woods' social security number and his birth date.

  though he looks nothing like golf's best player, the 30-year-old taylor then used the false identification and credit cards to buy a 70-inch tv, stereos and a used luxury car between august 1998 and august 1999. .

  We have a territory in Australia which uses the three strikes rule, but only with property crime. It resulted in such ridiculous things as a person being sent to jail for stealing a towel!

  a number of posts this week drew attention to the pseudo-science of the watchtower organization.

  in recent years the wts has not fared much better and clinging to fundamentalist ideas about the age of man, the idea that all of genesis is true only causes problems and serious questions.. i have previously posted thoughts on an archeological find and i thought id mention it again.

  the case was the 1991 discovery of the frozen corpse of an ancient man in the italian alps.

  It reminds me of something we discovered for ourselves and the WTS with regards to their manner of quoting. We decided to check the references in the "creation" book. Some were direct misquotes and one direct quote which about C14 dating which they proceeded to twist 180 degrees. That was the point at which my husband decided he had had enough of the WTS.

  I'd give the Christmas cake a miss myself - but I don't like cake all that much. Easter Eggs on the other hand....hmm chocolate.

  I'd never posted to a board either before someone put me onto this one, and I've kind of become addicted to it. I hope you enjoy your visits here as much as I have . I'm sure any questons you post will have some interesting replies.
