Kind of looking for a quick update
by free2beme ini have been out of the religion since 1996. i used to come to former witness boards a lot in the distant past, and then i lost interest in the subject.
however, with a couple relatives still in and passing the 1914 one hundred year mark, i find myself looking to see what a modern jehovah's witness is believing.
could i get kind of an update on some things.

Thank you, and yes TEN YEARS since I joined this forum. However, while I read a lot then ... not so much now. It has been more the fact of time, and life moving on. However, things came up lately in which I wondered what was up in the JW world and knew this site was the place to find some REAL answers. SIMON sure has upgraded the place from the early years. Thanks for the responses. -

I have been out of the religion since 1996. I used to come to former Witness boards a lot in the distant past, and then I lost interest in the subject. However, with a couple relatives still in and passing the 1914 one hundred year mark, I find myself looking to see what a modern Jehovah's Witness is believing. Could I get kind of an update on some things. Namely the following.
Do they still believe the end could come at any moment? I grew up being told that I might wake tomorrow to the end, because of the generation of 1914 (I know that changed). Do they still believe the end is close and how do they account for so much time to have passed?
Are they still saying the preaching work is done, and if so do they still consider China as not included in the world?
I read some where a while back that 2034 was some how being passed around as a new date, do to something with Noah and some crazy time frame of 120 years past 1914. Is this being taught.
When I looked at the number of Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide, it does not look like much growth since I left. Maybe a million or so, but not much growth in the United States. I also noticed that countries like Japan were shrinking. How is this being handled?
Who is the head of the religion now? (Please do not say Jesus Christ, as we know that is BS).
I heard through someone that people who faded (Like myself) are now supposed to be treated as DFed to wrap up that loop hole. Is this true?
One last question. What is up with jw.com, as I was in front of a Walmart and the Witnesses had a booth and were heavily promoting it. Did they change their views on the usefulness of the internet (When I was there, it was still aol).
I appreciate some updates, as I never ask Witness relatives. If I did, they would think I was wanting back in or positioning myself to attack them.

Well, I got none right in 2014. Dang it! Maybe I need to be a little more realistic and not predict so much with people dying, UFO sightings and so on. But got to have fun. So let me make a few predictions of 2015.
1. I see gas continuing to go down and down, until we see some places in the USA hitting $1.50 per gallon. Which will actually cause a serious job problem in states like North and South Dakota, down to Oklahoma and Texas. But I will have one hell of a road trip!
2. I see more major terrorist attacks in the cyber world. Mostly the retail and entertainment sector. Which will lead to an early release of Star Wars, which will help me not to have to be seeing such an unreal count down. (Just please, not the crap of Episode 1-3).
3. I feel that Hillary Clinton will end up choosing to drop out of the race, as there are serious health issues that she is not being open about. These will lead to a lack of confidence, and will lead to Joe running as lead on the ticket. Of course, SNL will celebrate this will a major Thank You!
4, Russia will take the Ukraine, it will also invade Georgia and other smaller broken away nations.
5. George Bush Sr, I feel will pass by the Spring. Which sucks, as I kind of liked him post presidency.
6. I predict we will hear more and more useless information about Kim K, and that husband of hers. Which will ever have my head shaking and wondering, "Why do we care about this fat bottom girl so much?"
7. I feel the Jehovah's Witnesses will make further and larger cuts to the organization, and lower the amount of hours expected by their members. As they put less focus on door-to-door and more on bible studies, and member recruitment that is succeeding (Which should lead to large birth rate in their religion, as that is the best way to get new members).
8. Someone will invent an app that actually alerts you to JWs in your neighborhood, allowing time for lights off, door bell disconnections, and dogs released to prevent the knock.
9. Earthquake of epic levels in Rio, London and India. (Why, not gotta have those things in predictions).
10. The pope will declare a dog a saint! (For fun!)
Have a great year, live to see the next.

Poster country flags and privacy
by Simon inthe new forum originally had a little country flag next to each post showing the country that the post was made from based on the geoip encoding (the country the ip address is from).
before i switched over to the new site someone made an issue about it violating their privacy and i didn't want to complicate and confuse the switchover with policy debate at the same time as technical issues so removed the flags even though i disagreed.. someone has already requested it as a feature and i think it should be added back so i thought it's now time to open the discussion and get everyone's opinions.
first, the reason i think it should be shown:.

Working on Thanksgiving
by free2beme inevery year now, we all get story after story of the cruel practive of taking people away to work on thanksgiving.
while i was not raised to celebrate the holiday, and even after taking it on, i still see it as a dinner and at best a few friends and family members eating together.
yet for most americans, it is not really that big of a deal to work on thanksgiving.

Every year now, we all get story after story of the cruel practive of taking people away to work on Thanksgiving. While I was not raised to celebrate the holiday, and even after taking it on, I still see it as a dinner and at best a few friends and family members eating together. Yet for most Americans, it is not really that big of a deal to work on Thanksgiving. Most do not really have any time off around it, and most will not travel to see any relatives. Why is that?
Now I may be just speaking for myself and not this audience, but with those to whom I know and work with, this is something we see as the hidden truth to working on thanksgiving complaints. Who we see complaining are the older generation or perhaps people who have that time off. They make comments like, "It is not right," and we should "boycott these businesses." All sounds so noble and amazing, it nearly puts their passion on a level in which I believe they really mean it. But I don't and I won't.
Looking at Thanksgiving, it stands out that a lot of Federal businesses are closed on that day. Which is awesome, right? You can catch a plane, drive hundreds of miles or perhaps plan a huge amount of activity in that one day... and then be back to work Friday! Yes, back to work FRIDAY. As most jobs will only allow those with the most seniority and time with the company to have the day after Thanksgiving off. Most have to be back to work, and had to work to support those black Friday deals. Some how though, no one ever complained about that. But god forbid you work Thanksgiving!
Now lets talk pay, I have not found any companies that did not pay either time in a half or double time on the holiday and most people need money for that other holiday, Christmas. Which is supposedly about Christ, but we all know it is about decorations and presents. Pressure tells us to buy more, buy expensive and spend spend spend! So the more money we have the more spending we do. Which drives the economy and gets more corporations rich in time to cut jobs in January.
Anyway, I went to a Thanksgiving sale last year. I was met with huge crowds, witnessed unreal amounts of purchases being made and honestly it looked very successful. I waited in line with all sorts of hypocrites who mentioned their guilt, their feelings of thinking this was wrong and slid their cards to make great purchases and save on items they would buy anyway. So yeah, the guilt really got to them!
So each year I hear the complaints. Each year I see those post on Facebook and the disgust of thinking greed of those corporations are punishing families with their greed. But more than anything, each year I stand in these long lines with these people who spend spend spend, and make sure that more and more businesses will open on Thanksgiving each year. Eat your turkey early, with those relatives close enough to drive to your table and stop complaining America. We love it, it's fun and I am hitting Target and Walmart this year. Going to be great!

There might be some truth in this, as my mom said this in 1971, 1980, 1990, 2000 and just last week. LOL

I liked this post, as it will make Christians uneasy and yet leads right in to how mythology evolves as time moves forward and people lose faith in the nonsense.

Heaven, where you are?
by free2beme inso in the last couple of months we lost robin williams and joan rivers and i have heard something a lot.
i bet they are loving the comedy shows in heaven, or they are now performing with no pain and so on.
so is this the image christians have of heaven, that what you are on earth is what you will be doing in heaven?

As that is what is being said here, in one sense or another. Like many things that Christians say, this too makes no sense!
