the following is taken from the washington post article by victor gilinsky, former commissioner of the nrc, is interesting, yet deserves some commentary about his conclusions, and analysis:.
you wouldn't know it from the bland pronouncements of the nuclear regulatory commission (nrc), but the u.s. nuclear industry just had its closest brush with disaster since the 1979 three mile island accident.. this lead in sentence right away is sensationalistic by using the word disaster, and by making comparisons to tmi, thus conjuring up images of some fearful event that would bring ominous results.

despite economic growth in the inner city, health care is lagging far behind.
perhaps this story does have a positive ending (south central l.a. was a particular hot spot during the l.a. riots):.
the residents of the area that includes the south-central neighborhood have the highest numbers of deaths due to diabetes, heart disease and lung cancer in the county.
Hey Prisca,
I hear you. We'd have a lot fewer people IN the hospitals if we had a strong preventive health care system.

jane doe once upon a time had a dream life, she had the perfect man, who would've done anything for her, and did everything just for her, loved her wholeheartedly, dedicating the rest of his life to make her happy.
well, one day joe blow comes along, and sweeps jane off her feet, w/ his delightful smile and his vivacious personality--and jane starts to get confused: she has deeps feeling for john doe, but she just can't resist this joe blow.
somehow, in the middle of ruining her dream life--the nice house, loving, caring person to share it with, she finds herself totally smittened by joe blow, and starts thinking about him more than she thinks about her john doe dude.
A lot of nice comments have been made to the effect that you can love more than one person. We all know this already, but we try to pretend it doesn't apply to 'romantic love'.
I think that it most definitely does.
We want 'romantic love' to make us feel special and well attended. Well, attention does not = love.
When you love someone, it’s not about giving that person attention. They know they are loved, without having to ask. They feel accepted, cared for, admired, appreciated, etc…
Attention is almost purely a sexual currency.
See the difference?
The dilemma everyone has brought up boils down to: ‘how do I give more than one person enough attention in exchange for sex?’
But I reiterate:
attention does not = love

Considering the recent announcement that the jobless rate in the U.S. is the highest it's been in 7 years, here's a look into Los Angeles...
Despite economic growth in the inner city, health care is lagging far behind. Perhaps this story does have a positive ending (South Central L.A. was a particular hot spot during the L.A. riots):
The residents of the area that includes the South-Central neighborhood have the highest numbers of deaths due to diabetes, heart disease and lung cancer in the county. The poverty rate, also the highest in the county, is 37 percent. More than 17 percent of mothers give birth with no prenatal care, 25 percent of adults have no regular source of medical care and 47.4 percent of adults and nearly 28 percent of children have no health insurance.Los Angeles Inner City Beset by Chronic Health ProblemsDr. Jonathan Fielding, the county's director of public health who helped design the collaboration effort, said the approach had fundamentally shifted the department's focus toward preventive medicine and away from just treating illnesses.
But Dr. Fielding said the approach was being undermined by budget problems. The Health Department is expected to have a $344 million budget gap in the 2004 fiscal year and a $688 million one in the following year.
This is already forcing cutbacks. Dr. Erica Watson, a health officer, explained that, until recently, she had been in charge of community health services in a district just south of the South-Central one. But Dr. Watson was recently given responsibility over an adjacent district as well with no increase in staff or budget.
The South-Central district recently drew up a list of health priorities, and the top four were preventing teenage pregnancy, creating better access to health care, providing prenatal care and creating more opportunities for children to exercise.
"Not one of the four was disease-oriented," said Dr. Belinda Towns, the district's health officer. "They all get at root causes of disease. They may take a long time to provide results, but they have a better chance of long-range success."
Ms. Jones of Healthy African-American Families added, "For so long we just waited for everything to fall apart then we did something in crisis mode. Now, we're talking about prevention. It's a different paradigm. Our community has been researched to death without much actually happening. We want to do something now."

...the sensationalism goes both ways on these sensitive issues.
I just read a funny comment that if liberals hadn't consistently blocked nuclear energy and conservatives hadn't blocked renewable energy, we would be far less reliant by now on fossil fuels, which fell through the regulatory cracks, so to speak.

hi everyone, i too have been lurking for a few weeks and thought it was time i made myself known.
i am not a jw but i am married to a man who is from a multi-generational family of jw's (although he has not been to meetings since he was old enough to object).
although i have never had any direct involvement with the organisation itself, i find my life is constantly infulenced by these people who judge, shun and avoid my husband and i (i guess they don't want to mix with "worldy people" such as us).
I enjoyed reading up on your experiences, Judith...
...and yes, there are quite a few here who have become atheists, myself included.
I hope you enjoy reading up on what others have to say here.
If I could offer a small bit of advice, actually more of a reminder...
...people can't make you feel shame if you don't want to feel shame.
You don't have to conform to the family's mentality. Your persistent kindness and fairness will be unphased by their pettiness. In the long run, you should win the respect of at least a few people, if you haven't already.
good luck,
cellomould

i saw this editorial cartoon today by mike peters that i thought you might enjoy.
a boy asked his dad, "is there a god?".
the father answers back, "there must be, for him to survive all these religions.".
Gosh such adamant replies!
