just a quick thought - i am a firm believer in freedom of speech etc, but having been on this forum for some time i honestly can't say that i can introduce a doubting jw interested in true christianity to this board.
some of the deep discussions on jw doctrine are excellent, but everything else seems to be nonsense in my opinion.
why can't this site be more like the old www.witnesses.net which seemed to have more spiritual meat rather than backbiting, gossip, and rumour and even obscenity.. sorry for my frank opinion
Thanks also to you aC,
this was a nice conversation, and civil throughout. (well, at least the last coupla' pages)

i have had a couple of discussions about freewill lately but it seems as if i am talking to a brick wall.
here is my basic reasoning, perhaps you can point out what i am missing.. lets outline the 2 common assumptions normally associated with the debate concerning adam, god and freewill:.
2. god gave adam freewill to obey him or not to.
Gravedancer,
Point out to people who will argue with you that 'freewill' is simply a crutch.
It itself is a phrase absent from the bible, or at least not present in the same context.
It has been used excessively by christians to cover up inconsistencies and logical errors.
So everytime someone goes to use that word, stop them! That is exactly when they are attempting to gloss over a major fallacy in their reasoning.
When you need to add concepts into the reading of the bible in order to explain it, something is wrong.

this abstract of an article in the journal nature relates to the concept of disfellowshipping, or shunning, in my opinion.. now we know why witnesses tend to cooperate.
(damned if you don't!!!).
altruistic punishment in humans.
Thanks for your comments, Thomas...
While a godly standard for what is acceptable sounds nice conceptually, what does 'acceptable' really mean?
Once a deed is done, it is done.
The argument that it 'shouldn't have happened' is almost as futile as the argument that 'it didn't happen'. We know of course what happened.
Societies really only care about what happens within their boundaries, meaning that the 'evildoer' can do whatever he wants as long as he does it elsewhere.
Hence, human standards (even 'godly' standards) tend to be much more retroactive (kick out the 'shameful' members) than proactive (encouraging cooperation).
I think that's where the problem lies with punishment and ostracism. What do they solve proactively? Not much.

hey everybody,.
my sister-in-law's brother took his life sunday afternoon.
it has been devastating to her and her family.
Nat,
Please accept my condolences. It is a frightening situation, I am sure.
I just heard from an old friend that his sister just took her own life. She was a wonderful woman. I do not really know how to help besides listening. Maybe that's all I can do.
Perhaps we can help each other find ways to encourage our friends.
Thanks for sharing your feelings,

islam (at least the fundy bin laden variety) seems like the billy the kid of western religion.
western religion (including judaism and islam) considers individuals as separate entities irrevocably responsible to allah or god or jehovah rather than integral parts of a whole such as eastern religions buddhism and hinduism.. how has that difference affected you as a jw or as a former jw?.
"blessed are those whose god is not the clock.
picosito,
That's dangerous, to be concise.
I didn't see that I was part of a self-serving social machine until I had evaluated several world viewpoints and ideas.
At least when Stalin coerced, extorted, or killed you, he admitted it was for the good of the system, and not the individual. You knew you were just a god-damned spoke on the wheel.

the above phrase is one of the most cherished in the watchtowers huge arsenal of tools for manipulation.
it is used to work the average jehovah's witness into a sort of frenzy and keep them there.

Very nice synopsis of why we die, funkyderek. No one feels its unfair when moths die, for example. In fact, no one would mind if all the moths on the planet died simultaneously.
Well, I have a question, which should be harder to answer:
If Yadirf doesn't want to be unconvinced, why does he offer us the scant results of his gold-panning for logical arguments?
Perhaps he just posts to enjoy seeing his picture.
Or perhaps he is just another moth attracted to the 'light':
edited to say 'moth'

Hey gravedancer,
I am really tired but man did I enjoy that article! Thanks for posting it; I almost missed it.
Is this a website you've been frequenting for a while? Seems like good stuff can be found there.
By the way, I have a friend who claims to be a pixel. Perhaps the reward is to be mine...
