At least it might put an end to the endless "they didn't really go to the moon you know, it was all faked" nonsense. And as for a reason to go in the first place, I would say potentially the survival of the human race is quite a good reason to go, although I take the point about saving the planet first.

A must read!!!! Reminded me of the dub's paradise!
by kittyeatzjdubs ina recent thread that was started about the dubs view of remarrying in paradise reminded me of a book i read many times in high school.. the giver by lois lowry.
it's basically about a boy who grows up in a perfect utopian world.
there's one elderly man who remembers how the real world was and he passes the truth on to the boy.

"Yah, I read A Clockwork Orange in junior high (early 70s), and it scared me." I read that at uni, it certainly struck a nerve with me. I rushed out and got a copy of the video and it was all set at my uni, Alex' bedroom was my room in halls and the spot where he meets up with his droogs was the steps up to the engineering block. Very freaky

Dembski's defense: quote and link(s) for the non-dogmatic
by Shining One inhttp://www.designinference.com/documents/2000.11.id_coming_clean.htm .
ill come back to what it means for design in nature to have empirical content, but i want for the moment to stay with the worry that intelligent design is but a disguised form of creationism.
ask any leader in the design movement whether intelligent design is stealth creationism, and theyll deny it.

That is purely because no ID-ot has ever produced any hard scientific evidence for their hypothesis, there has has never been any experimentation and there has never been any predictions made that could be scientifically tested to prove any aspect of ID.

I really don't understand why science is being portrayed by some posters as dogmatic, all you have to do is come up with a new theory that fits the facts better than what we have currently and provide some hard scientific evidence for your point of view, do your experiments, get your results. Write it up, get it peer reviewed and published and lo and behold all those 'dogmatic' scientists will roll over.

Buy the best bike you can if you are planning to use it regularly, try talking to your local bike shop and asking if they have anything suitable second hand. When buying a bike the frame is the most important part followed by wheels, headset, bottom bracket, brakes. Being light is important since it's you that will have to get it up hills, a more expensive lightweight bike will be more responsive, will handle better, be more comfortable and you will be more likely to use it. Always test ride before you buy. If you are only planning on riding on-road you don't need suspension, If you're riding off road don't buy a cheap suspension bike.
Proper gear also makes a world of difference to your comfort and safety, decent helmet, gloves, shoes and shorts. Clipless pedals (they confusingly clip onto your shoes) or clipped pedals (where your feet are strapped to the pedals) are very easy to get used to and make pedalling much easier.
Sidepull brakes are as good as centrepull if they are maintained and lubricated properly. The most important things to look after are the headset, bottom bracket, cables, chain, sprockets and chainrings, brake pads and rims. If in doubt buy a book, if your bike is making a noise it needs fixing.
The most important thing to remember is that everyone else on the road is trying to kill you so ride defensively, i.e. not in the gutter. I ride about 1/4 of the road width out except at junctions where I ride in the middle of my lane. If you need to change lane do NOT wait for a gap, signal clearly and then glare over your shoulder. Eye contact is very important when in traffic. Watch every other road user and you will quickly learn to anticipate problems ahead.
Pedestrians are deaf, blind, stupid and have no sense of speed, so keep an eye out for them and their lemming like desire to walk out in front of you.
If you think a road is too dangerous to ride on, ride on the pavement, its better to be riding where you shouldn't than be another statistic.
Other than all that it's great fun. -

Is Intelligent Design self-refuting ?
by hooberus in.
some critics (here) of intelligent design theories claim that it is "self-refuting" to invoke design and / or complexity, as evidence for an intelligent designer explanation for things such as the origin of life, other complex biological structures, etc.
since this claim comes up somewhat frequently, i thought it should be given its own thread.

As "science" it is self refuting since it not a theory and as such has never been peer reviewed. ID is a perfectly good topic of conversation in a theological context but it is not science and never will be, it's proponents are religous crackpots who should put their money where their mouth is and submit an "ID theory" paper for review. Of course that is never going to happen.

i am trying to think about examples of animals that would be bad for the intelligent design theory.
i like to use the ostrich because it has wings but doesnt fly.

"Also, I understand how an more advanced brain would help a fellow to survive over someone with who's less evolved (develop tools, weapons, shelter, etc.) but HOW did they get develop this brain?" Roybatty
obviously short generations and an ever life threatening environment will speed up this process.

"Generally, out of well meaning ignorance, society and family program the child that it is a separate entity and everything else experienced and sensed is other." James Thomas
I'm afraid that simply isn't true James, there is a simple experiment to see if a creature recognizes itself. All you do is place it in front of a mirror and see how it interacts with the mirror image. Babies very quickly will recognise themselves (obviously to do this they must have an innate sense of self (i.e. it isn't programmed into them by parents as you suggest) interestingly other primates also have this same sense of self.
"At the end of the day the inclination of man to believe in a superior intelligent creator is innate" Green dawn
I hate to be picky but are you saying it's innate or an inclination?
