  i thought i should write a big thanks to simon for this board, not only has it been a big eye-opener to me regarding my past and helped me realise how many people have been through the same stuff as i have, but it's through this board that i've met a wonderful woman, michelle (calico ethel).. michelle is beautiful, intelligent, funny and luckily for me has terrible eyesight, i feel very fortunate to have met her and hopefully (presuming i can keep on hiding her glasses!

  ) we shall be very happy together in the future.

  she has rather recklessly and bravely agreed to move in with me and is moving over at the beginning of february.

  Well thanks for all the lovely comments, I suppose I should have thanked everybody on the board too, because if it wasn't such an interesting place I wouldn't have kept coming back!

  I am especially glad I picked Hobbes as an avatar, because I was going to use a picture of Richard E Grant in a scene from Withnail and I!

  Thank you to LT I will try to keep the lurvin' resticted to the loved up thread in future!

  And another thank you to Michelle for putting up with a grumpy old git like me for a partner, although I still am not sure how you reckon you are difficult to live with, I quite enjoy the underwear hanging off my bedroom mirror (sorry LT!)

  300 million year old rock

  I will try to answer based on some rusty geology I learnt at school.

  Rock is made by various processes, sedimentary rock is formed by layers of sediment being deposited so they will never be 'young' since it takes a long time to form. A river bed or beach is the sort of place sedimentary rocks will eventually form.

  Igneous rocks are formed by geological activity such as volcanoes so they can be young, if a volcanoe erupts and you can pick up pumice or obsidian from freshly ejected material then that is 'new' rock. Most igneous rocks cool very slowly underground and are then slowly revealed by erosion or weathering so they can be old too.

  Due to the age of the earth and it's relatively calm geological nature most rock is old.

  There is another type, metamorphic which is a mixture of the other two and a lot of pressure so also takes a long time to form but at that point my knowledge becomes a little sketchy!

  Finding a piece of pumice or obsidian that is a week/month/year old is not terribly exciting though!

  how did consciousness arise from no consciousness?

  Consciousness isn't an on/off state. There are animals that have a sense of self, look up the psychology experiments done in this area. Some animals recognise that the creature in the mirror isn't another animal but is themselves reflected. That suggests a level of consciousness, although clearly not on the same level as homo sapiens.

  Now while we may have no scientific proof that pleases scientists as to the exsistance of God, there are things in this world that at the very least make the idea of God more likely than an absurd idea like the teapot.

  That is the point there is no empirical evidence for either so the teapot is no more absurd than the absurd idea of a god or gods. The only thing that makes the god concept more likely is the personal beliefs of theists which have the same empirical weight as the personal beliefs of flat earthers.

  The most basic argument being that of cause and effect, how did consciousness arise from no consciousness? How could there be an effect greater than its cause? While this is not direct proof of god or any individual belief system I think simple things like this at least make the 'God concept' more likely than the giant teapot.

  I would be intrigued to hear the basic argument although I fear your following sentence may have hindered you already. The teapot is merely an example to show that a lack of empirical evidence against something isn't proof that it exists. Your argument that the god concept is more likely than the teapot concept is purely based on a belief structure not on any kind of empirical evidence, if the christian religion were based on a worship of floating china teapots then the god concept would work just as well to show the lack of empirical evidence for teapot worship.

  I am quite keen on the idea of the inherent instability of the pre-big-bang singularity, but the sad truth is that even if science comes up with a theory within my lifetime I can honestly say that I probably wont be capable of following the mathematical proof.

  The inherent instability hypothesis would tend to suggest a cyclical nature to the big-bang theory as mentioned by his dudeness tetrapod-sapien.

  i am curious, what amount people on this board from their experiences of being a baptised & active jw and their subsequent exit from the jw org (for whatever reason or reasons) are now either agnostic, atheist or do some actually still believe in god?.

  I don't believe in any god/s in the same way I don't believe in ghosts, spirits, unicorns or goblins or any other fantasy/supernatural entities.

  As far as I can see you either believe that the entire universe is natural or supernatural. If there is a god in there at any point you believe in a supernatural universe. I believe the universe is an amazingly fantastic, beautiful, natural phenomenon that never ceases to amaze me.

  As an engineer I find there is an inherent beauty to the natural universe and all it's symmetry from the most basic building blocks of matter all the way up to the most complex structures we see around us. That is what atheism is about for me, recognising the beauty in nature and realising how lucky we are.

  Instead we have evolutionists spouting off that the Second Law of Thermodynamics and Entropy that is a universal law from the smallest rock to the largest galaxy somehow does not apply to evolution because the earth is a closed system. Meaning what? Meaning that because there is energy from the sun that somehow caused a single celled amoeba to mutate into a more comlex life form with DNA that spontaneously emerged out of nowhere?

  If it's any help I did study thermodynamics and what the evolutionist's are telling you is correct.

  Fundamentally what the second law is telling you is that you don't get something for nothing, If you want useful work out of a machine you have to put energy into it. The second law does allow for localised decreases in entropy. If you put a kettle on the stove it will boil water (a localised decrease in entropy) at a cost of the energy burnt to heat it. Our localised decrease in entropy (i.e. the earth's biosphere) is paid for by the burning of nuclear fuel in the sun. If the sun goes out we all die and entropy will take over.

  As for your assertion about spontaneous appearance of dna, I would be very interested to hear your sources for that idea because I know that isn't in any text book I have ever read.

  Are you suggesting that there is no genetic link between humans and apes? because we do share huge amounts of genetic material that point toward a shared ancester, exactly as predicted by evolutionary science.

  i know a lot of song threads have been posted but i am interested in what and why a particular song moves you to keep going when you have lost so much.. if possible find the lyrics to the song and post them along with your what song and why it was so important.

  as a kid i had an old 78 record player that i had to wind up to play (i did say old.

  ) there was one old record that had a song by ed ames 'the impossible dream" i was in foster care and had no contact with my family.
