How do you overcome this JW excuse?
by EdenOne induring one of those meetings that took place before my jc, one of the elders, who was a good friend of mine back then and used to come up with a few outlandish personal views about some teachings, attempted to counter one of my arguments like this:.
eden - "well, if the truth doesn't change, why is it that what we teach as 'truth' has changed over the years (several examples given)?
how can we dogmatically claim at any given moment that we have 'the truth' if our teachings keep changing?".

New forum 'parousia' is upon us! (software version)
by Simon inthe time has nearly come to switch over to the new forum software.
of course it's not completely finished yet (and never will be) but i think it's good enough to go live with and probably already better than the current one.
i'll give you a quick overview of what to expect and post more detail about the changeover process later.. cloud platform.

Did you piss on their parade? Christmas?
by jambon1 inwhen you were a jw and someone mentioned 'have a nice christmas' or 'have a nice holiday' did you just say 'thanks, enjoy it yourself' or did you piss all over their good mood and bore them to death about why you don't celebrate it?.

My mom mortified me with the speech too many times for me to throw cold water on such a warm spirited and kind greeting. She has gotten over that mostly-except with her grandkids who she feels compelled to lecture about it in some twisted-don't get your gramma privileges revoked kind of way. She has pushed that boundary with all her kids-none of whom are JW or who had anything to do with it past age 15.
She is subtler than she used to be. she is doing what she thinks she must though, more's the pity!

Do the witnesses baptize in Jesus name?
by runForever inhttp://www.jw.org/en/jehovahs-witnesses/faq/are-jehovahs-witnesses-christians/.
the third bullet point there claims they baptize in jesus name.
i know the baptism questions never mention jesus once.. .

Interesting that JWs understand that the expression "Name of" doesn't mean the literal name-UNLESS it is Jehovah-whose name Jesus (and apostles) was apparently flinging all over the NT because he would "make his name known". But THAT could not have meant (In JW LAND) anything like " all that a name implies, of authority, character, rank, majesty, power, excellence, etc., of everything that the name covers."

Mormons getting hollowed out: The tipping point has occurred.
by Qcmbr inever since mitt romney turned the spotlight on the lds church a growing tsunami of disaffection has been accelerated and brought to a head.. the lds core faithful members are leaving in increasing numbers such that growth has not simply stagnated in the west but it has actively reversed.
to their credit the church is responding aggressively but not only is it too late, it is an impossible task.
you can only paint sh*t so many ways.

I was raised in a JW home and my best friends were LDS at school-as I started mentally pulling away from JW thought, I was trying to nurture friends that woldn't lead me into a bunch of stereotypical apostate kind of trouble. I was never a wild child. . I did a lot of things with LDS friends socially and went to church and until today, am very good friends with one of them, and two have passed away (from actually going apostate to LDS thinking, sadly) and most ofthe rest, though I am not close, are still very much the nice kids, all grown up into nice family people. I think one is way too smart-genius, I think) and analytical and it makes him pretty unhappy about his place inthe church (hes a bishop, with at least 5 kids at last count). I think he would fade away if he could get away with it but I think it is a lot easier for (even baptised) LDS to fade out before marriage or after a divorce (when everyone is too busy being polite to pester you). His family is in it hardcore and now his kids and his wife is the classic good mormon wife. I don't think he hates his everyday life or the responsibilities (they are heavy and they are unpaid clergy, too, with bigger congregations, more social programs and duties than JWs have). It really is a whole lifestyle. If he would have just faded before marriage, his family would not make a big deal. NOW, its a big deal.
I got into that church because I liked the people in it. I never bought the stories, but I liked the lifestyle and my friends. When I left the church, withdrew my membership 3 years after joining, my friends and their famlies knew, and none of them shunned me to this day. I tried finding the "perfect" church. There isn't any. Jesus said, and I believe it, though I am not christian, that you will know his followers by their love. I have met a lot of Chrsitians and non Christians in a lot of different christian denonimations. I have even met NON christians who, according to that one definition of a follower of Jesus, follow him. JWs,LDS, SB, RC's. Not one religion has a brand on being followers of Jesus.

I am going to pioneer after the holidays!
by snakeface inyes, you heard right.. as you know, most christian organizations publish and distribute little tracts with their gospel message.
well they also make some that expose the lies of the wt, and explain how it is a cult.
even if people are not interested in the "gospel message" in these tracts, the tracts do a good job exposing the wt as a cult.. now, those of you who are now agnostic or athiests or just non-religious, please keep reading, to understand what i plan to do.... i am expecting to receive $$ for christmas.

I like Jemba's approach!
If this is about making restitutions for the wrongs you did as a JW, and it works for you-go for it.
Or you could just buy food for the food bank. It will go farther and get your MUCH more appreciation for your efforts (even if its all anonymous)

I was DA'd. I like the more subtle ways to avoid it "taken it up in prayer" is good! How about, "When I am the age of Jesus, we will see if I am ready then"

We are all damaged but you are moving on. You will continue to do so because Your most important words were that "I'm a survivor".
You don't need to follow any culture or tradition that hurts right now (if Christmas is a hot button, just don't do it).
See your doctor and tell them what's going on (physical and emotional responses when off meds). If the meds are helping, don't quit yet. If you are ready to change them, the doc can help you do it so you won't make yourself nuts.
A lot of people here care about you and you are in our thoughts and/or prayers. All my best to you!

If that was the intent, then there would not have been 2 sexes. Or more. Maybe they just have sex for fun in heaven? Maybe we don't need to speculate!
