by joelbear indestruction?

Being raised a witness has it's benefits...
by Princess ini actually have several reasons why i don't resent my witness upbringing, but it sure came in handy today.. last year i posted about helping 50 kids run in the seattle kids marathon at my daughter's school.
the event was a blast and while it was a ton of work, seeing the joy on the kids' faces when they crossed the finish line made it all worth it.. this morning i spoke to the entire student body at my daughter's school at their monthly spirit assembly.
if i hadn't been raised a witness, giving talks from the time i was five, i never would have attempted such a thing.

Fair enough, but I know TONS of horrible public speakers in the WTS!! So mind-numbingly dull they could put you into a coma. I agree it forces you to build up confidence and poise, even if you are in the "Josef Goebbels Watchtower Propaganda School" LOL

Are you a witness because it is the path of least resistance?
by tfsm ini think most (particularly those with witness parents or family) are witnesses because it is easier to stay than to go.
what i am wondering is- why would a reasonably educated adult choose to become a witness in the first place?
my parents got into it when i was about five and i have asked them what the reason was and the answer has varied over the years from "the world is a sick place and we did it for you" to "we were lost and looking for something".

My parents came in in the 60s, but thankfully they never bought into the 75 crap. There was a HUGE drop in membership in 76-77....ah if only those trends had continued !! LOL

I personally know many adult dubs, born and raised in it, who have had doubts all their lives, to simply stay in it out of apathy and fear of rocking the boat. I think this is extremely sad, but there is a phenomenon in the behavioural psychology literature known as "Learned Helplessness" that I think perfectly describes this mind-set. They have been conditioned not to resist and simply accept the situation....the nagging doubts are still there and plague them, but they honestly feel its better to remain with the "devil they know" then venture into terra incognita.
As for adults who join, I would imagine there is typically some precipitating event that shakes them to their core, rendering them vulnerable to the "psychological anaesthesia" the watchtower offers them.
Its interesting, based on your age, I am guessing your parents joined the WTS around 1973. Have you ever asked them if the 1975 predictions were part of their inspiration for joining?
Cheers

Why write a letter of disassociation?
by tfsm inmy question may seem vague but if one decides to leave "the organization", why write a formal letter?
why not just leave and not have any further contact with the witnesses?
is there some legitimate legal reason for this or do people do this because the witness thinking has overtaken their logic?

I have mixed feelings about this. I can understand the the cathartic release it must provide and certainly keeps them away (although I am certain there are some zealot elders that would still harass you regardless of any dissociation letter).
But having said that, there are some negatives: It must provide the elders with a tremendous "power surge" realizing the extent of the power they had over you that you had to provide a formal "discharge" document to them. In other ways, it validates the entire, sick power structure of the borg. Most people leaving can only do so after finally accepting the reality that the "power" they had over you was a complete illusion, but the letter must still provide the elders with a smug sense of satisfaction. Finally, I would imagine a particularly vitriolic letter could complicate things further with any relatives remaining in the borg if some of the contents of the letter leaked out (and believe me, this happens!)
I would say, if at all possible....walk away in silence with a big smile and dont look back. Revenge is a dish best served cold......

Not one elder has called me since my fade!
by in a new york bethel minute ini started fading two and a half years ago... and i have never been contacted once.
not even a call to see how i was doing.
my mom is still a diehard dub and doesn't even think it unusual.

I am hearing more and more stories like this, at least in the toronto area. Several faders I know, even some who quite blatantly were involved in some sort of "scandal" just dont get contacted by the dubs anymore. Its either apathy, or they really are just losing control of the flock...lol

I thought I was an addict until I read the first post!! I definitely go through horrible withdrawal symptoms if I dont get it first thing in the morning and keep up my plasma caffeine levels througout the day. Caffeine acts on the same brain pathways as almost all other addictive drugs.

The splinter group still exists today as the "Dawn Bible Students"....its an interesting website, they vehemently deny any association with the WTS and strictly adhere to Russells teachings.
