astrology and compatibility with your mate....a grain of truth???
by kid-A inlet me start off by saying i dont believe in astrology and most certainly not horoscopes.
having said that, i have often considered the real possibility that the time and season of the year we are born in can dramatically influence our pre-natal development and the resulting personality, i dont think this has anything to do with "stars" or cosmology, but we do know that babies born in certain seasons or months are more prone to certain illnesses, temperaments etc.. i'm an aries and had a really lousy relationship with a "cancer" for many years.
she always pointed out that all of the compatibility charts state that aries and cancers are fundamentally incompatible and it turned out....she was right!!

How do you defend your god's inaction?
by AlmostAtheist inthis is a question for those that believe in a god or gods, particularly those described as "all knowing" or "almighty".. how do you defend to yourself that your god has not in any modern situation saved his people from anything?.
people of all faiths are regularly killed by various natural elements.
of course, if you knew such a thing was going to befall a person and you could do something to protect them, you would.

Such is the murky world of ethics. It isn't black and white, and the shades of grey extend beyond national borders. Since we haven't got a good grasp on the ethical diversity of this planet, how come we are so judgemental of a "dimension" that we know so little of (and in some cases have no belief in)? Further, aren't we also guilty of anthromorphising?
LT, I would agree with that 100%

Define "deist".
Futher, define "creator". Are you responsible for what your children do?
LT,
I am loosely using the term 'deist' as anyone believing in a supreme "god" existing in the universe (certainly not all "spiritual" people would fall under this rubric). To a point, I am responsible for what my children do (certainly in a LEGAL sense I am).
But what is more important, I am responsible for protecting my children under every possible circumstance and in any conceivable situation, where it is within my power to do so. And if it were possible, I would do EVERYTHING in my power to prevent any harm from happening to them. The problem I have is derived from the definition of god, listed above, being the only definition I know, having been raised in the judeo-christian tradition. I cant see a reconciliation of this conception of a supreme being with the symphony of horrors taking place on this earth on a constant basis.

Further, why is it ok for an atheist or deist to say "sh!t happens", but not for a theist? Seems a bit like dual standards, to me.
The conceptual framework is completely different. The atheist starts from the position that the universe is empty of any god-like creature and accepts the reality of the situation: we can only help ourselves, if we choose.
The deist comes from the position that there is some divine, omnipotent being in the universe that is "the supreme intelligence", "loving" and "merciful"....given this premise one must look around the reality of the horrors on this earth and either conclude 1) god does NOT possess the above attributes or 2) he has left the building. Either way, if one CREATES the universe and everything within it.....the buck must stop with said CREATOR....

Hey Brooke,
Hope you are feeling better soon. I had an osteochondroma removed from my leg several years ago. They cut through the muscles to saw off the bone tumour. I was laid up for 2 months and in mind-numbing pain. Soon the tylenol 3s wore off and I needed stronger pain killers. Many years later, still have a 3 inch scar and numbness around the surgical area due to nerves being cut. Nonetheless, I can walk perfectly now so its all worth it in the end.
Get well soon!

I wasn't even my choice...should it count?
by findingmyway ini can't help thinking that if i had never gotten baptized out of loyalty and fear of disappointing my parents (and fear of having my flesh eaten by birds of prey after being destroyed in armageddon), i would not be in this situation.
i have several family members and former friends who were raised as jws, but never got baptized, and they never have to experience the angst and pain that i have to experience.
i was baptized and never dedicated my life.

I was one of the lucky ones who never got baptized....but I agree, they should offer a "baptism annulment".....

i am an atheist so i dont know much about the bible.

"God and Satan are settling a bet. Humans are just pawns"
Perfectly expressed! Raising the next question, would a loving parent, the supreme being of the universe, "bet" the well-being of their children to settle a score?
