  why believe in god?

  the following are only my thoughts open for comments.

  i have not formulated these thoughts into convictions but i will say these are my beliefs at this point in my spiritual growth.

  Interesting thread. Reading Fowers reply only reinterates my conclusion that religion has absolutly nothing to do with God. With few exceptions, most of the negativity about God originates with concepts originating with religion. For those "sitting on the fence" try to meditate with a completely open mind. It's difficult I know; some of that old dogma always seems to seep in. For example, the Bible doesn't have to be infallable, or even inspired for that matter, for there to be a God. There doesn't have to be baptism for there to be a God.
  If you sincerely ask for truth and evidence, (not the "OK god if you're there talk to me" type asking) the Creator will show Him/Herself to you in His/Her own way.

  DO EVEN DIE HARD JWs REALLY THINK THE END IS NEAR

  after reading a couple of posts about the growing apathy among the r&f jws today i was reminded of the years following 1975 when the dropout rate was growing rapidly and the "faithful" die hards took it as a sign that the "end" was really really near since the winnowing process was removing so much chaff.

  keep in mind that this was over 25 years ago.

  it's been mentioned before but it is worth repeating that, no matter what is happening, religious fanatics(jws) always see it as a sign from god.

  Do a web search on "end times", "rapture", "last days", "end of the world" or countless other such phrases. You will find that JW's are far from unique in such beliefs. In fact there are many non-religious people holding the same view.

  Totally Stumped

  here it is april 16, 2002. i have not been out in service for, oh, about 2-3 years now?

  my wife is the die-hard jw who always reaches her quota, if not a little more.

  we have been in a new congregation for about a year now, and we have yet to receive a "shepherding visit" from the local elders.

  Congregations, like individuals, have varying personalities. Despite what many may think there are congregations of witnesses and many individuals that don't reflect the steriotype reflected on most opposition sites.
  On the other hand there are congregations from hell.

  Evidence of creation?

  not trying to start a discussion about extra-terrestrial life, but i assume that most feel it to be a rather strong possibility whether your belief is in creation, evolution or both.. i agree that discovery of intelligent life outside this world doesn't prove creation.

  suppose however that such life were discovered and that it was of the homo-saphien variety?

  what would be the odds of this happening through pure evolution?

  Would you say one analogy is more impossible than the other?
  One or the other must be true. How do you choose between two impossiblities? In my case what I see reflects intelligent design and intent. Eye of the beholder I suppose.

  Francois said "Creationists have NOTHING BUT miracles." Come on Francois, that goes both ways. I have yet to have the origen of the universe explained in a purely scientific manner, (other than matter originating from some "strange vibration".) Observed phenomina with no explination = miracle. The assumption is that there is some as yet unknown scientific explination without a creator, but that is because the creator possibility isn't even considered by avid evolutionists.

  Either way it's a miracle IMHO.

  That's one prophecy that just might be fulfilled in the next decade or so. The "war on terrorizm" is a war against Islam. Once the ball starts rolling, it might not stop. Sounds far fetched I know; but not as far fetched as it sounded a couple of years ago.

  Should religious claims be tried in court?

  most people of the western world believe that the freedom to speak and express your opinion is a fundemental "right" of humans.. but how far can free speech go?.

  what if i owned a cigarette firm, and i wanted to say on the packet, "somking is very benifical for you".

  am i using my right to free speech, or am i misleading other people?.

  I agree with Ranchette. They should be held accountable for their actions. There are many subjective areas where claims made by religions (they "talk with God" etc.) where the courts should stay away. People need to use their common sense.

  A question I can't answer...

  my soon to be mother-in-law, asked me a question that i can't find an answer to.

  we were talking about my life as a jehovah's witness, and how i don't hate my late father for raising me as one.

  more importantly how i don't blame him but rather blame the religion for my aweful childhood.. her question is, "was there anything i enjoyed about being a jehovah's witness?
