My parents wanted a book study in their house so bad. It never happened. I guess it was considered a priviledge. Even when they were looking for a new place to live they would try to see where they could have the book study. I'm glad it never happened. And knowing my mom now, I'm sure she probably wouldn't want the responsibility.

Book study in your home
by pratt1 in.
did anyone have the book study group meet in your home?.
my family had the book study group meeting in our basement and it was such a drag.. some of the reasons why it sucked.. the house always had to be spotless.. my mom insisted that there was always refreshments available for after the group meeting.. some dubs used to wander into other parts of the house, including my room.. if i missed the bookstudy because i was sick, some would actually come down to my room to talk.. there were many times when little things would go missing, glasses, magaizines, books, food, you name it.. people would check out my music and books all the time.. i have long since moved out, but mom still has the book study meeting there..

Not everyone left the JW Org for the same reason...Why did you leave?
by JH insome left because they couldn't follow the pace.
some left because they knew they were living a double life.. some left because they rathered live a life of sin.. and some left because they considered it a cult.. i stopped going because i was unable to keep up with all their demands and expectations, and i found them too controling.
also because they cover their past and give false hope for the near future.. why did you leave?.

I left because I "came out" at 16 and was forced into the elder tribunals and my parents sent me to a shrink that was a JW. I "ran away" (actually went to visit worldly relatives without letting my parents know ahead of time) for a month and when I returned, I really didn't want to face the elders or the people in the congregation. Knowing the congregation gossip mill, I'm sure everyone knew.
Speaking of gossip mill, when I was in high school I had a creative writing project. I wrote a fun little story that received a good grade and comments by my teacher. I was so proud I went to show it to my best friends in the hall. The thing is, the story had a party that involved drinking and a ouija board. Well apparently I was ratted out and a MS wannabe elder pulled me aside and counseled me on what I wrote and said I should only write about things christians would do. If I could go back, I would go tell him to go screw himself.

Describe the WILDEST JW party you ever attended!! no seriously......
by kid-A ini realize this is totally context and culturally dependent, but the old toronto jw youth scene was quite wild during the years 1984-1994. .
one example, a group of about 40 jw kids would go up to a ski resort (usually mount st.louis/moonstone or blue mountain) over the x-mas week-end.
one year we rented out a block of rooms in a resort close to the ski lodge.

We never had alcohol at our parties. I think most of the kids in my congo were teenagers. A few months ago I went home to visit my parents. They converted all of their home videos to DVD and decided to play some. Well one of the chapters was of one of my friend's graduation parties. It was a very WASPie looking get together, but nothing different from what I would expect from any conservative protestant party. One of the brothers in the hall was a DJ and he would sneek in "scandalous" songs like "Tootsie Roll" etc... Too funny.

by pratt1 in.
for those of you in a serious relationship, is your partner "worldly", an ex dub, or a current dub?.

Elder not calling us "brother or sister" at the book study
by JH ina few months ago, i went to a couple of book studies, and i hadn't set foot there in years, but what stuck me was when the elder called people by their first names when he asked questions at the book study.. instead of saying brother rat, he just called me rat .
instead of saying brother smith, he just said gary, and so on..... .
either the elder was making it more friendly by using our first names in stead of saying brother or sister so and so, or it was a change in the way they operate.. .

I look back and HATE how at my Kingdom Hall wedding after the ceremony the elder said " I would like to present to you "Brother and Sister XXXX" We had a few "worldy" people at the wedding, I'm sure they were lost......
Unless it was a wedding in West Virginia. J/K!
IIRC, we used first names if you didn't take the plunge and titles if you did. I always hated when they called on me for prayer. UUgghhh!

What silly rules did your congregation make up?
by weinermcgee inelders were famous for making up stupid rules with no bible base at all as an ego trip i guess, what were some of yours?
i am not talking about the stupid rules that we all had to follow, just the congregation specific silly ones.. 1. having to button your jacket while on stage (this was later changed due to all the elders having a beer gut).
2. suits only or no privledges.

This makes me wonder if there are ever battles between congregations. The one congregation must think itself superior since they didn't wear mustaches. Such unity!
This would definately happen when there's more than one congregation sharing a hall.

Well after much waiting I received an e-mail from Out Takes Dallas (the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) that my film was accepted. I haven't been able to show my mom because I know she would find the material "objectionable". Although it is just a simple romantic comedy. Well I was so excited, I called her and let her know that it was accepted. I also told her that I'm waiting to hear from some fests in her area. With that she said "let me know if they take it and when it is playing". Wow! Not what I would expect out of my JW mom. Now I just gotta keep my fingers crossed and hope they take it. :-D

Do Must Dubs Have Pre-Marital Sex?
by tall penguin init's not often talked about but in my experience a lot of witnesses have sex (or something like it) during their courtship.
and most of them never go to the elders about it.
recent case in point: my dear friend got married this past summer.

My mom and step-father did.
I was 11 and they were only dating for a couple of months when all of the sudden my mom sat my brother and I down and asked if we would still follow the "truth" if she were to be disfellowshiped. (I should have taken the out right then) A week later she was only reproved and my soon to be step father was disfellowshiped. A few weeks after he was reinstated, they got married.
It took a few years for me to realize what happened. Being 11 at the time I didn't but 2 and 2 together. Later on I found out he was disfellowshiped because he was a repeat offender. Apparently, before he met my mother, he slept with his landlady a non-jw. I don't know what gets into these people to go and tell the elders.
