From what I've discovered, my last name is a very popular French last name. It think it means fur trader or something like that.

Do you know what your last name means and where it comes from . . .?
by Justahuman24 ini have always been interested in what last names mean and where they come from and if someone famous in the past is related to us because of the same last name.
my last name comes from greek but my family is not greek.
it dates back to the year 700ce and it was around the time in europe when people were starting to get last names - i'm talking about the general people not monarchs.

Northwest or Jetblue here's what I would do....you?
by Gregor ina couple of years ago a nw flight kept passengers on the tarmac for over 8 hrs.
because of back up at gates related to bad weather.
yesterday, jetblue did the same thing for 11 hours.

This is a complicated problem with very little the airlines can do without pissing off the customers. When there is inclimate weather that has a chance to go away, the FAA may issue a stoppage which will prevent planes from taking off. If the weather was really bad, the flight would have been cancelled outright. However, in these situations, the weather is just passing through. Now comes the tricky part, once the weather clears, the plane can leave but has to get squeezed into an existing schedule of planes waiting to take off and planes that may have been holding to land. The pilot may receive a clearance that is only good for 15 minutes. It is impossible to load a plane full of passengers in fifteen minutes.
Leaving the gate and waiting is beneficial to the airlines because it frees up a gate that needs to be used for passengers that just landed as well keeping the plane ready for an immediate departure when clearance is given. If the airlines went back to the gate and allowed passengers to disembark, this would create lengthy delays as well as possible create a huge safety issue if passengers decide not to return to the plane. Any passenger that doesn't return would have to have his/her bags off loaded. Also, pilots put in alot of work calculating weight, balance, fuel, and power needed for the flight. If these numbers change, it could put the airplane in danger.
I am not saying I agree with waiting on the tarmac for 8 friggin hours. I would say that if 90 minutes go by the flight should be outright cancelled.
The pilots and the flight attendants do not like when this happens at all. Did you know that most pilots and flight attendants only get paid for flight time? That means that the entire time the plane is on the ground they are not making any money.

I think half of these "crazies" are paid to act that way. If not, it's really depressing to know how many people are that desperate to be famous.
Remember the first guy from the NY audition that sang "Gloria" and was acting like a big ole diva? My friends said they saw him out at a bar in LA Saturday night. One more crazy person in Los Angeles! ahhh!!
One more AI thing: Saturday while I was doing the preflight for my flying lesson at Van Nuys airport, there was a private jet sitting on the ramp. Three sedans pulled up and Paul, Ryan, Simon, and his girlfriend boarded. Didn't see Randy but he could have boarded while I wasn't paying attention.

I thought it was real until the hair cutting part. It started to seem staged at that point. If it was real, she must have pissed off her bridesmaid a lot to make her post it on you tube.

Why is Europe more liberal then the United States?
by free2beme ini have wondered this for awhile and can not figure out why.
any ideas?
apparently being liberal does not lead to an economic power house, but it does lead to a lot of hatred of the united states in these countries.

I agree with the person from New Zealand (I forgot your nickname) who said that people in America are in their own little world. When you have a country as vast and diverse as the USA, you have a lot going on within your borders and people tend not to pay attention to what's happening outside.
I think the media does play a huge role in playing up the differences and the polarization between people here in the US (liberals v. conservatives) and outside (rest of the world v. USA). However, the media revolves around conflict. I believe the old news saying is: If it bleeds it leads! No one wants to watch a news story on the village of happy people unless there was a secret coverup about their happiness.
I do think that most of the people on this board are a little more enlightened than the average world citizen. We researched our way out of the borg, I'm sure we all research other topics as well.
I wish people were a little less ignorant to the outside world in this country. I'm leaving on vacation to Buenos Aires soon and you wouldn't believe how many times people have asked if I was getting excited about visiting BRAZIL!!!! AAHH!! And when I correct them they usually say "close enough". Mon dieu!
(I started every paragraph with "I"!! Now that's American :-) )

EErrr.. It's one of those macho cultural things. Most of Latin America was crazy like that for awhile but things are getting better there.
As the article states, it's even in their music. Some of the music that makes it over here to the states are by artists that have been known to say some really homophobic things. It's funny though because some of the music is still played at gay and lesbian bars. I'm on the fence about that because I don't like to support those artists although it would probably kill the artist to see a bunch or gays and lesbians dancing to their music. HAHA!!
And there's always something to be said about someone that shows so much hatred towards something or someone. This is proven time and time again. You would probably be surprised that probably a high percentage of men in Jamaica probably have sexual contact with other men "on the downlow" more than anyone there would admit. In a culture like that it is always considered ok (though not spoken of) to receive certain sexual acts as long as you're not the one doing it. This can actually be very dangerous and lead to the spread of more diseases as the people are not properly educated. -

Why Did Jesus Not Write Anything ?
by choosing life inhave you ever wondered why jesus did not put anything in writing?
he was here to explain his father to us and teach us how to gain salvation.
wouldn't it have been a good thing to write his instructions down, rather than leave it up to others many years later?

"Now multiply that over 2000 years and what do you think you will get."
I'm not a religious person. But a teacher making a statement like that is the about the same as teaching religion in the classroom. Although I agree with the statement, it doesn't belong in school. -

Regardless of his existence, there were many accounts of the story of Jesus written by many people. Unfortunately, when the "church" started to put the Bible together, many of these accounts were left out for various reasons including the ever so popular "I doesn't go well with the rest of the Church's teachings".
The Gospel of St. Thomas, is the one that they were basing the movie Stigmata on. It wasn't written by Jesus as the movie stated. I believe it wasn't discovered until the 19th century but deemed heretical because the teachings contained were too mystical and didn't work well for the church.
