Oh Vitty, I might add....I never tell myself I can never drink again. That feels too depressing for me.
I just choose day by day. And it gets easier day by day. This last weekend I really wanted a drink so bad. I told my boyfriend. We just had a restful easy weekend and I got through it without succumbing. I think the hurricane disaster in New Orleans and all the coverage sort of got me really down and some other personal stuff is eating at me. I wanted a chemical relief. Thats how it goes...week by week...day by day.
You know what makes me feel better?
Laughing with a good friend.
A good physical workout.
A massage.
Naps.
And a wonderful cup of tea around 5pm.

Congratulations Vitty! My mom died of alcohol poisoning when I was 19. She'd been trying to kill herself with alcohol since I was 5. Finally she succeeded! Congratulations mom! She was warned by doctors for years to give it up. Her liver showed signs of wear and tear, not to mention the occasional yellow eyes and broken blood veins on her arms and face. But she was a determined person. Nothing was going to stop her! Not divorce, loss of her children and home and health and youthful beauty. At 41 she passed blissfully away in her sleep....she looked like she was 70.
You'd think I would never drink a drop after living through such a nightmare with an alcoholic mother.
The stories I could tell of my drunken mother at my girl scout troop meeting, or of mother getting loud during my junior high school orchestra concert and being escorted out. Or of the only time I had a girlfriend spend the night to have my mom pass out on the floor before dinner. Needless to say I never saw that friend again.
I did try drinking. Found it doesnt "agree" with me either just like mom.
Gave it up for years.
Then tried it again.
I'm now in another dry season.
I'm saving alot of money not drinking, not to mention calories, and oh might I also add...brain cells! -

does god listen to prayers?
by el jarocho mayor inwhen people pray does god listen?
does he care?
when prayers are "answered", is that proof of a divine being?

But truthfully after being dfd and now apart from a Christian group and my reverant family, I dont pray anymore. My experience with the JW has ruined my spirituality. I am the damned wicked, the banished, the good as dead, the living soon to be manure for the new earth. How can I pray now? I have prayed to Jehovah for forgiveness for unchristian conduct since my dfing. I am currently being very good, but now it doesnt count they say. You can be good but if you are not a witness, or worse a dfd person then you are dead. This does not encourage me to continue praying to a God who might be blocking my prayers. All those prayers I said in faith years ago might have been just a way to get through the moment emotionally. Our minds find ways to rationalize anything that happens after we pray for help. Perhaps this was His answer! Even though it was not what we wanted we work it out in our minds to accept a strange outcome as Gods answer and will for us and so find peace with it. So the odds are stacked in Gods favor: Anyway it happens, any outcome will be considered Gods answer!

All my life I prayed to God, during my parent's awful fights and during their divorce, when friends suffered auto accidents, when I was stuck on side of the freeway with no cell phone, when my house burned to the ground and so on. I also prayed when I was so miserable in the JWs I prayed for God to help me cause I was dying (spiritually and emotionally) so yeah.....I guess he does hear our prayers!

I agree, my pets are my kids. What these Americans have been through has been so painful to even read!

Report of "Brothers and Sisters" affected by Katrina
by Grace inwe have have all been so affected by the news from the southern us, and even up here in the middle of the canadian prairie i wish i could open my home to so many who need a home right now; however, all i can do (and it's better than nothing) is to whip out my credit card and make a donation to the red cross.. i picked up my jw husband from the kh today (i am disassociated), and he said, "... they had a report that most of the brothers and sisters in new orleans happened to be at an assembly in houston when the tragedy struck ~ so, not to worry, because not too many were affected.
" of course, it didn't cross his mind to help non-jw folks, and, quite obviously, the elders from the platform would never suggest this because it has been made clear how the rank and file should view charity and humanitarian efforts.. didn't jesus say something about love being the distinguishable mark of a christian?
uhmmmm.... and they're shunning us [those who don't agree with them]?.

Glad to hear of "the report" that few witnesses were affected by Katrinas force. But the report doesnt sound very official. I'm sure many suffered the loss of their properties.

After Katrina, do you now have an emergency plan?
by LyinEyes ini know many people who live down south louisiana , were raised to be on guard for hurricanes.
i thought i heard on cnn that 80% did evacuate out.
i can imagine trying to get the most valuable things in a car , get my money out of the bank, gas the car up, put water and food in case traffic is jammed, clothes , medicine, pets, contacting family..all of that would be exasperating if some of it was not ready to go.. every year we have tornadoes, flooding, but the ice storms are what we are afraid up my way nw louisiana.

We are talking about that now. Today we got 4 truckloads of cut wood for our wood stove. I thought if the gas prices go up so will the electrical rates. We cook with gas and so have always been able to make meals when the lights go out. Lots of canned meals are in the lower cupboards. We just bought a nice new can opener for us and for his mom. Water is stored outside in a shed. A natural creek runs in the backyard, but we are taking Brenda's advice to get some water purifiers.
Having an emergency first aid kit and toiletries is something I will be in charge of. I live in earthquake land so having to live out of doors is a real possibility. We have a camping cookstove and back up propane cylinders. Drinking out of the back of toilets and the water heater is a great idea. Pet food is something I've thought to stock up on (canned form).
This is a good discussion. I like preparing for disaster (and then having it never come) -

We are going to learn alot here. This misery and mismanaged situation will be studied for long after this day. This country is new to defending itself on its own shores. As Americans we have not had much practice in banding together as a people to stay alive. 911 and now this. What is next? I hope my conduct when my local disaster hits will be something I can look back on and be proud of. Preparation is the key, both physically and emotionally. A soldier's attitude of courage and bravery are required. I am so impressed by the willingness of so many to enroll in the Red Cross' relief program. Hundreds are signing up for 2 day courses to go to N.O. and offer their help in any way they can. I hope they all bring some water and formula for the babies and children. That breaks my heart most of all, seeing parents and grandparents holding limp dehydrating children.

Is this swearing, to a JW?
by wordlywife insaying "jesus" or "judas priest", as when watching a football game and a call or play is bad?
my jw husband does this frequently.. .
would this be considered swearing by the average witness?.

This is all so funny cause it reminds me of how careful my JW family was with cuss words.
The only expression allowed was "Oh my!" I kid you not! My sisters in laws with kids were serious about this and if you wanted access to their kids it was "Oh my!" or "Oh no!" and all the time.
I remember once my fleshly brother not in the troof visited and he had an occasion to swear for some reason. Oh boy could he swear mighty fine!!! It was music to my ears to hear some well placed expletives!
Wow!!!
Now that I'm out of the borg I tried of bit of swearing myself, you know, to see how it fits.
Nah, just cant get comfortable with it. It just spills out all over my chin and makes me look bad.
I'm Dfd and saying "Oh my!" ..........good grief! (that was another allowed expression)
