I mean, I bought the sea monkey kit, waiting excitedly for them to start dancing around in their top hats, and all they did was slowly simmer to death on my window cill throughout the summer months. This dual morality of theirs really struck me as a Jdub kid. Whilst you wouldn't dream of deceiving or taking advantage of a fellow Jdub, all the rules were suspended when it came to dealing with worldly people. My father, an elder, would appropriate reams of paper etc from work as though it didn't count as stealing, but remained scrupulously honest in his dealings with other dubs. 'Christian' behaviour stopped at the door of the KH and didn't extend to the wider community. It's like they feel entitled to do what they want to screw whatever they want out of the 'evil old system', even if it involves clearly unChristian behaviour.
I can't begin to imagine the arrogance it takes to deliberately mess with the message of the Bible by adding words and taking liberties with punctuation.

i had the weirdest dream last night.... it started with me taking a taxi ride in some city i had never been in before and i kept seeing these billboards which were all black and white and saying: dont go there!

I had the same experience of grinning madly and having to supress giggles last time I got a couple of oddly dressed ladies brandishing magazines on my doorstep. Managed to get across the point that isn't it great that Jesus came so we could have a direct relationship with God rather than relying on humans to interpret His word for us, and how sinister it is that religions have arisen out of Jesus's simple message and seek to 'interpret' scripture for us, telling us we can't understand it on our own. :-)
Also said I had a problem with any religion that afforded inferior status to women, when Jesus clearly treated them as equals, and they even headed congregations in the first century. Said I didn't like titles either - vicar, priest, elder, whatever - as we are all equal before God. Tee hee hee. Haven't seen them since, though. Can't imagine why...

This question always did my head in and I couldn't accept that it was 'all our fault' either, particularly where innocents are concerned. Best book I've ever read on the subject is The Problem of Pain by C S Lewis. You don't have to be a Christian and take a leap of faith to understand Lewis's writing - he was a brilliant scholar and Christian apologist, making his arguments clearly and honestly. And I'm someone who spent years being furious with God for permitting things to be the way they are. Give it a read and see what you think, I'd be interested to hear the viewpoints of someone who read the book and still felt the same way.
