When my cousin who is a dub found out taht I'm an atheist and that I celebrate xmas she said, "If you don't believe in jesus you shouldn't celebrate Christmas." I told her that that was the nice thing about not being a dub, you don't have to look at everything in black and white. So what if I don't believe in god, I can still do the profane parts of xmas. It's hard to give up linear thinking after being a dub.

Athiests and Christmas?
by clash_city_rockers ini was just thinking.
since christmas is about the birth of christ, i know dec 25 was not his birthday, probly born around late sept or early oct. i guess he wanted to be born right before the baseball playoffs and world series, just kidding.
it was the early christian church that appointed dec 25th.

Where is God?
by donkey inwhy does god allow this stuff?
according to your teachings, believers, just so he can stroke himself and show how man has failed.
in fact believers will read this stuff and shrug it off because in the future god will fix it it and it just proves why we need god..

recurring dream
by ChrisVance ini decided to share this recurring dream in hopes i won't have it any more.
in this dream i still live with my mother and i've told her and everyone else very plainly that i don't believe jw's have the truth and that i don't want anything to do with it.
however, going to the meetings and going from door to door are such habits that i continue to do them anyway.

It always kills me the way believers haughtily say, "You can't blame god for what man does". To them it's perfectly all right for a loving, all powerful god to just look to other way. Of course, they arrogantly say he helps them with their problems while he ignores these yourng children. I guess their needs are more important.

Jehovah or God is blood thirsty
by MrMoe insecond kings, we learn that menahem, leader of the israelites, smote all the people who refused to follow him and all the women therein that were with child he ripped up (2 kings 15:16).
later, in hosea, we learn that because the land of samaria rejected god, samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her god: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up (hosea 13:16).
hosea decided to carry out gods vengeance on the people by killing the unborn babies carried by the heathen women.

gumby, not I don't think god is all powerfull. As a matter of fact I don't think s/he/it exists.
The appropriate question isn't "Why isn't God doing something?".
navigator, not an appropriate question. We're not all powerful, so there are many things we can't do anything about. Can we stop to jews and palestinians from killing each other? Can we cure AIDS and cancer? No. A loving, all powerful god would do these things. However, since s/he/it doesn't exist it's a mute point. I was just commenting on wrapped thinking.
It is our own guilt and the sorrow that we cause that creates hell right here on the 3rd Rock.
Iwasyoungonce, so the child with brain cancer causes his disease by "own guilt" and "sorrow". I don't mean to be offensive but that sounds like wrapped thinking to me. -

Joelbear, I know what you're saying about mental illness being blamed on rebelliousness. In high school I was accused of the same thing. I've also suffered suicidal thoughts a lot, although luckily they all but disappeared as soon as I left the borg. Not that i haven't suffered depression since then. It's just not been as severe. When I was in the borg I had to take 30mg of Prozac, which is a very high dose, in order to function. Now I'm down to 10mg. Hope you continue to feel better. Take care of yourself.

How can you decide what not to know, if you don't know what it is???
If the believers in god's selective foreknowledge have an answer to this one, I'd like to hear it. I'm sure they'll just ignore your question. What else can they do?

MrMoe, thanks for starting this thread. I agree with what you say.
In the Hebrew mind, God was the author of all natural disasters and they wrote it that way. That doesn't make it so. Their view of God was very warped. It doesn't mean that ours has to be.
The people who have a warped view of god are those who think he's all powerful and that the fact that he doesn't do anything about all the suffering in the world is OK. -

Reverse Thinking
by Yizuman infor years i've been reading and talking to people who are out of the organization either by being df'ed or da'ed themselves from the so called "truth".. my main concern is that once the former jdubs are out, they start to reverse their thinking from everything the jdubs had learned that is considered a "no no", ranging from sex, satanism, getting into pornagraphy, drugs, alcohol, rock music, smoking, reading ouji boards and anything else they can get their hands into that was considered forbidden by the wt.
even some decided to reverse their thinking from believing "there is a god" to "there is no god".. while i can understand the anger and bitterness that has resulted from realizing how they have been deceived by the wt for many years.
i am concerned about the destructive behavior that ex-jdubs are getting themselves into.. sure it gives ex-jdubs a sense of total freedom and go wild on everything that was forbidden to them.

desy2477, onacruse, jesika, garybuss you all make goods points. Although my life is very different than it was while I was a jdub, I still have many values I acquired while I was in "prison." I still believe it's important to be honest and treat people with respect. I wouldn't dream of stealing another person's posessions, etc. I like to believe I've filtered out the bad things that the jdub teach and kept the good things. Really, there were some goods things.
