by Open mind inok, first off, please don't shoot the messenger here.
the dateline show on jws hiding pedophiles was one of several "defining moments" in my process of questioning "the truth".
it disgusted me.

Disfellowshiping is it the act of judging?
by repented insomehow to me the disfellowshipping is very close to judging another person.
jesus once said he who is without sin cast the first stone.
now i know how that repented person felt when jesus stepped in.

Movies Better Than The Book
by littlerockguy inalthough it is sometimes hard to put so many elements of a novel into a 2 hour screenplay and motion picture and you end up reading the book and then watching the movie and wish they would have included stuff they left out.
however there are sometimes when you might watch the movie and end up more impressed with the movie and grown more attached to the movie than the book.
can you think of any movies you thought were better than the book it was based on?

"i tried to read a tom clancy book once....gave up halfway - too much weaponry detail - booooooring"
How in earth can you say that ANY Tom Clancy book is boring?
Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger actually made good movies. The Sum of All Fear and Hunt for Red October were only so so.
Try again.

Give Examples of How JWs Try To "Demonize" Everything
by minimus inhere's an example......years ago if a jw wanted a heart transplant or a transplant of any kind, it was considered "cannibalism".
to "prove" that this was oh so wrong, they provided an article about a person who did get a new heart donated to them and suddenly they got the old personality of the donor.
the transplant changed everything about this man and he was no longer the same normal person.......and why??

"The transplant changed everything about this man and he was no longer the same normal person......."
I have seen this happen to two family members. It's not as far fetched as you think. My wife's grandmother and my grandfather both had open heart surgery to replace valves. They DID have marked changes in personality, they were not the same afterward.

Pedophile Hysteria
by Paralipomenon inthere was an interesting comment from a british mp about the ill effects of pedophile hysteria.
currently there are many instances where men are guilty until proven innocent and it's starting to impact society.
90% of all all teachers from grades jk to 3 are women.

"That being the case, these men being accused should be examined by their colleagues and co-workers as to whether or not the evidence of their daily life indicates that they could have tendencies to molest children."
But once the accusation has been made it's too late. No one will beleive or accept it if the accused is found not guilty. The thinking will be "He got off because___________. I have seen it happen already.

Specific banned shows, songs, etc...?
by AllAlongTheWatchtower ini know the society tells people not to listen to rock n roll cause its from teh satan, not to watch r rated movies because they're "worldly", etc.
but i was wondering if folks had any specific instances where one song, one show, one movie, or whatever was singled out as being particularly 'evil', and banned on an individual basis?
i was never a jw, but was in the worldwide church of god...the two are rather similar, i've seen many (and made quite a few myself) comparisons on the board; and i can remember as a child that every once in a while certain things would get brought up as being more evil and worldly than others.. examples of specific bans:.

Okay I have read the entire thread so far and I'm thinking why do I not know of ANY of these so called "bans?"
Star Trek, watched it with my father who was an elder. Smurfs, sorry to say I watched them as now I see them as quite possible the LAMEST cartoon ever made. Bewitched, saw BOTH Darrens! I know of some who chose not to watch "Scooby Doo Where Are You?" That's their choice but I still watch Scooby Doo.
As for movies we went to all of the Star Wars, all the Indiana Jones, all the Star Trek.
Music, I first heard the claim that Kiss stood for Kids In Satan's Service from a born again neighbor who said he got it from his minister. I know of no ban on Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Eagles, Beatles or any other act.
Seems to me that you let others' opinions sway your thinking, ("If Brother X said it, it must be true.") -

"Nos, I've never heard that, but will have to listen later. "
This was one of the songs on Alice Cooper's visit to the Muppet show. He sang it to Miss Piggy of course!

"Hunters like to kill. "
Well possibly. I do know some who seem to enjoy killing animals. I also know some who enjoy simply being in the outdoors and watching the wildlife.
By the way, does killing rats count as hunting? Farmers around here have no problems killing them even if they are animals, mammals even.

I don't hunt. Tried it one year, froze my backside. I have no problem with those that enjoy hunting. Yes there were hunters in each of the congregations I've been a part of.
