Yeah, I am thinking it must be something regional because I did not see anything about it in the Charitable Planning brochure. They had everything else in there! But not anything about donations in lieu of flowers at funerals.

You should examine your own religion and "make sure of all things" .... wait ... did you say you were already a member of our "loving flock"??? Nevermind!

I don't like to go see movies where the plot is too predictable. Where's the suspense?

Even if it is poor quality, it would be worth it to hear the "Judge" introduce the Watchtower String Quartette playing O Holy Night!

Why I'm mad at god.
by Abandoned inthe past couple of days, i've been posting a lot about how disappointed and even disgusted i am with god and how he runs his universe.
i guess that probably offends some people.
i don't intend to make people feel bad, but here's what's been going on in my life lately:.

I'm sorry things are so rotten right now. It does no good to blame to god, though. Being mad at god is like being mad at Santa Claus. They are the realm of reality. I can sympathize, though. I went through a period of being mad at god, too. It did me no good, though. It didn't make me feel better, and it didn't fix it.
It always irritated me when I heard people say that god helped them or hurt them. It made no sense to me. If a kid is dying of cancer, they pray to god and want other people to pray to god to save her. If she survives the cancer, well then they say it was god that did it! Their prayers were answered! But what about little Susie Bobo on the next street who died of cancer? How come god let her die? It is ridiculous to think some invisible imaginary person has that much power over us.
Shit happens ... that's just life. All we can do is learn from our mistakes when possible, and when not possible, try to change our reaction to it. I know this sounds sorta metaphysical, but when I encounter a problem (or many), it helps me to tell myself that this is just an oppotunity for me to grow as a person and maybe become a little wiser. I know ... it sounds corny. But it works for me!

Should I get an iPod? What do you use yours for?
by Elsewhere inlet me start by saying that i am not a music fan.
i hardly ever listen to music and almost never buy cd's and my car's stereo is almost always set to npr or some other news station.
i don't even have a stereo system at home... simply because i would never use it.. however, i've been hearing more and more about the ipod devices.

Elsewhere, if you like NPR, you should check out the podcasts available on iTunes. They're free and you can listen to them at your convenience.

1914.... Quotes that mislead the reader
by drew sagan inone of the main ways the watchtower is able to mislead people is by impressing them that they actually fortold the events of 1914. they point to magazine articles and simply make stuff up in order to 'prove' that years in advance they announced that christ would return in 1914. typical is this quote: why, then, do the nations not realize and accept the approach of this climax of judgment?
it is because they have not heeded the world wide advertising of christs return and his second presence.
since long before world war i jehovahs witnesses pointed to 1914 as the time for this great event to occur.

Not exactly urban legend, just wrote time, wrong location. The Russellites stood on a bridge in Pittsburgh on Good Friday in 1878, dressed in white robes, waiting for the rapture. (As reported in a Pittsburgh newspaper.) Russell later denied he was there. He said some of his more "radical" followers were there. Who knows.Didnt Russell and the rest of bethel, stand on Brooklyn bridge waiting for armageddon in Oct 1914 ??
Im sure I read somewhere that they did
October has 31 days. Winter time. The bridge is very breezy.
Urban legend.

JW article "Armageddon, Inc." in the Saturday Evening Post
by Wild_Thing inhas anybody ever seen the article in the saturday evening post called "armageddon, inc"?
i can't post it due to copyright issues, but if you have access to a library or university archives, it is definitely worth it!
it was printed in 1940, but other than the references to the "judge" it reads like it was printed yesterday!
