Most celebrations are. Christmas, Easter, Boxing Day. It's hard to think of a holiday that isn't surrounded by a lot of meat. Thanksgiving is no different.

How do JWs pronounce COBE?
by Wild_Thing injust wondering.
when i was a witness, we had presiding overseer, and would say p-o for short.
do they spell it out when they say cobe or do they say it with as a word?

So at one time, the head of the congregation was called the Congregation Servant. Abbreviated how? C.S.?
Next, he was called the Presiding Overseer. Abbreviated PO.
Now, the position is called Coordinator of Body of Elders (which seems to me it should be abbreviated either COBOE or CBE. Why ignore one "of" but not the other?)
What were they called before the title of Congregation Servant?

What is the benifits to living forever?
by Jayk incan anyone give me a valid reason for it?
growing old is a drag.
the witnesses idea of ever lasting life, that you will come back to your most youthful state is such a bs answer..

No. Nothing in this entire universe lasts forever. Everything dies. Even stars die. To think that humans are the exception to the rule, and WE are the special ones that were meant to live forever is nothing short of egotistical. It would defy nature for humans to not age and die.

Inside the JW HQ Warwick, NY
by baldeagle inhere is a short 2-minute video from fox 5 news reviewing the new jw hq in warwick, ny.. the first thing the jw spokesperson says is, “our primary purpose is not to convert, but to give people an opportunity to see what the bible has to say.”.
next the reporter says, “the new world headquarters, which opened last year, is home to about 800 jehovah's witnesses.”.
it seems to me that 800 is an extremely low number since the glory days in brooklyn.

Trying to figure out why the Iliana in the article chose to highlight the fact that she can go shopping on the weekend if she likes. Seems like a sad attempt to bring an air of normalcy to the cult HQ.
Yes, and in the process, it just makes them sound more cultish. In other words ... "Sometimes they let me out!"

Just think about the ARC that was conducted here in Australia with 1006 cases of child sexual abuse handled by Elders that were never reported to the authorities or police over the past 35? years .With a population of about 60-70 thousand Jehovah`s Witnesses.
Now compare that with how many Jehovah`s Witnesses there are in the USA and what the ratio is likely to be with child sexual abuses in the congregations their.
If somebody more adept than me can do the correlation I would appreciate it.If the rate of reported cases were statistically similar in both countries, then ...
If there were 1000 reported* cases of child sexual abuse for a membership of 30,000 to 70,000 publishers in Australia, then in the U.S., there could be 16,000 - 17,000** reported* cases of abuse during the same time period. [U.S. publishers ranged from 500,000 - 1,200,000 during the same time period (1980-2016).]
This is assuming there is the same rate of abuse in both countries. I think the prevalence rate of child sexual abuse for the general population in United States and Australia may be similar, but I have read in some places that Australia's prevalence may be a bit higher. (I'll let someone else research that).
16,000-17,000 cases. If it is correct, that number is staggering to me, yet I would suspect the number is probably higher for the U.S.
* These are only the ones reported. I personally suspect the actual figure of abused children to be much higher.
** Check my math.

The First Judicial Committee?
by Wild_Thing ini was wondering ... when do you think the first judicial committee took place?
can you imagine being the guinea pig for that kind of fiasco?
i bet they were like, "what kind of bullshit is this?".

To my knowledge, there was no judicial committee formed surrounding that event. I don't think they even had that in place at at the time. Judicial committees came later, but I would love to know exactly when.

When did the Jehovah's Witnesses officially become a "religion"?
by Wild_Thing inmost people know that jehovah's witnesses began as a publishing company promoting a restorationist type christianity.
people who were followers were called bible students.
but when, exactly, did it change from a "movement" to a "religion"?

Most people know that Jehovah's Witnesses began as a publishing company promoting a restorationist type Christianity. People who were followers were called Bible Students.
But when, exactly, did it change from a "movement" to a "religion"?
And when did they start actually admitting they were a religion? I am guessing it is when they figured out claiming to be a religion would help them in the courts and in the pocketbook (no taxes).
It seems like here in America, religions have a lot of leeway to get away with just about anything. Even John Oliver created an official religion/church, just to prove how easy it can be done. I have often wondered if it is as easy to start a religion in other countries. Something else to ponder on my day home sick from work.

Wow! Thanks, sir82. I never knew there were references to treating people so horribly so early in the Watchtower.
When I read this quote, I totally heard it being said in Tony Morrison III's voice. It sounds like something he would say almost verbatim in their monthly broadcast videos.
"To be separate does not mean to be friends and companions, or to be in fellowship on any grounds. It means that we are to make a clean-cut division between ourselves and all the unclean, the impure in heart, as manifested by their disloyalty to the truth, and thereby to God, its great Author: and that this separation is to be so marked that the disfellowshipped one will be sure to know it. and that none can mistake our obedience and loyalty to the lord and his truth. There is to be no trifling or half-way obedience in this matter: for we are not only to be separate in spirit from the enemies of the Lord, but we are not to touch the unclean. As the Apostle elsewhere says we are to avoid them-to have no part or lot with them." Watchtower 1893 Oct 15 p.1588
