What was the silliest thing they told you NOT to do?
by goddess_baal inthere was some really piddily-crap that i remember.. for instance, when i was about 17 toe-rings became popular, and one of the sisters bought one....wore it to the kh during the summer with her sandals.
my best friend in the hall wanted one, which of course caused this huge debate about whether it would be okay 'in jehovah's eyes', and didn't it go against the scripture that counsels women against "bodily adornment", blah-blah-blah.
toe rings??!

What Are Things Jehovah's Witnesses Peculiarly Do?
by minimus injws seem to be preoccupied with "the world".
if a witness does anything out of line----they are considered "worldly".
she's "worldly".

minimus ...
LOL! I think your thread turned out to be the exact opposite of you intended! Am I right? If not ... my bad! :)
Well here's a shot for hopefully what you intended ...
Sure signs they are witness:
1) 10:30 am every Sat. and the local Dairy Queen is crammed with people dressed in Sunday clothes ... they're witnesses.
2) They leave a 10% tip ... they're witnesses. (apologies if this was not you ... there did seem to be an awful lot of witness who fit this bill.)
3) People are walking up and down your street in the pooring rain ... they're witnesses.
4) They indignantly decline a cigarette while downing their sixth beer ... they're witnesses.

Work Experience Brings Back Strange Memories ...
by Wild_Thing inso we all know that growing up in the organization can truly screw you up ... i am living proof.
but what happened today is over the top .... i am a school teacher.
i know of this situation involving two step-brothers (9 and 10 years old) who live together.

Thank you for all who responded ... it is sad, though, that kids are not allowed to be kids.
As far as placing blame... I think it is only fair for parents to share blame with the society for things they did under the organization's encouragement and influence.
It seems like families who have been witnesses for generations are more accepting of harsher discipline when it comes to behavior at the meetings. I have noticed some newer witnesses and ones who were not witnesses for very long seem appalled by the strict rules of behavior for young children among the witnesses. It makes me think that it is more of a JW tradition passed down through the generations.
Galaxy7 ... I can so relate to the fears of destruction! I grew up on the pictures in the red Paradise book and the Revelations book! Not much better! It took me forever to get the images of destruction out of my head!
And yes ... I did have to go into therapy.

So we all know that growing up in the organization can truly screw you up ... I am living proof. But what happened today is over the top ...
I am a school teacher. I know of this situation involving two step-brothers (9 and 10 years old) who live together. The younger one is very smart, but known to be a holy terror. The older one has learning problems, but is very sweet. Yesterday, the older one said hello to me in the hall and asked me if I had a neice. He told me that "she goes to my church."
I thought he might be mistaken, seeing how "church" is a JW taboo term. After a little questioning, it is evident that he is telling the truth. As it turns out, his dad (whom he lives with) has been studying for a year and a half. The dad's new wife (of 3 years) is opposed, so only the older boy goes to the meetings with his dad. The younger step-brother is not exposed to it at all because of the difference in opinion between the parents. It is a tradegy in the making, as it appears the dad is becoming involved with the witnesses.
At any rate, I found myself thinking maybe his younger step-brother (who is a holy terror in the classroom) should go the meetings so he would learn how to behave. I wanted to slap myself! Where was this coming from? Someone ... please slap me!
Then I remembered a story my mom likes to tell when comparing which of her children were easier to raise. She said I would never stop moving from the moment I started walking. I was into everything and always had to be doing something. Needless to say, I was a holy terror at the meetings. She told me that she would walk the parking lots with me with I was baby, with both of us crying ... her being exhausted from trying to make me sit still and be quiet. I was the third of three children and the old tricks didn't work with me ... not even spankings.
She said she found something that worked when I was three years old. She would tape record the meetings (it seems like tape-recording talks was very popular back then). Everyday, when we were at home, she would set the tape player on the coffee table and replay the talks. She said she would sit right beside me on the couch with one arm around me and a paddle in the other hand. She said she started out with 10 minutes everyday and increased it until I could sit for long periods of time (I don't know how long she kept this up). It worked, though. I became one of the most theocratic, well behaved JW child you ever did see. <gag!>
I didn't realize until recently how cruel this probably was. I know that by today's standards, this would seem pretty abusive. Twenty or thirty years ago, it was more widely accepted and more or less promoted by the Watchtower. Now I find myself worrying about my neices. Does the Watchtower still encourage things like that? Am I mistaken when I say that they use to encourage spanking to instill "good" behaviors at meetings? Are there still screaming kids in the bathrooms at the meetings?

No Visit of Encouragement
by CaptK ini have a question that hopefully someone can answer.
i am currently disfellowshiped but attending the sunday meetings at the kingdom hall.
i live with my mother who is in her late 70's and has been a witness for over 50 years.
-
Wild_Thing
No ... it wasn't because of you. They were just being plain rude. I have seen this happen before ... when someone gets too old to attend, they are just forgotten. It even happened to my grandmother ... a loyal witness for 50+ years. She went into the nursing and still wanted to attend meetings ... they helped her out for the first few months. After that ... no one even came by to see her.

Did your family ever makeup holidays?
by MicStroz inthis may sound funny, but my family would celebrate every year a " gift day".
it would be in december but never the week of christmas.
we would get gifts for each other and have a family meal.
-
Wild_Thing
Yep ... called "Family Day". They started about 6 years ago. It is just Thanksgiving and Christmas rolled into one. Big family meal and exchanging of presents .... its more than I got when I was a kid.

... raising hand.
I was homeschooled during my high school years. I regular pioneered for one year when I was 14. Went to pioneer school with I was 15 (the youngest person there). The pressure and stress of my JW family life got to me by the time I was 16(we were living a double life ... with my dad/elder being so abusive). I hit rock bottom and attempted suicide a year and half after I quit pioneering. so ...nope ... my teenage years are lost ... wouldn't relive them again for nothin'!
