Ours were always couples in their 60's and didn't stay very long before being reassigned. One Co had the most sinister smile when he fixed his stare on you. There was a suck up ministerial servant whose wife was expecting a baby. They named their baby girl after sister CO and made sure everyone knew that's what they were doing. (Can you say, big points?) She was a snotty unfriendly woman, but this made her smile a little.

by metatron ini'm writing this in the spirit of full disclosure and honesty.
if you really want to be an elder, you should get the whole story and honestly.

I agree with Juan Viejo about some elders being scary in the mental aptitude department. My poor Uncle by marriage was very friendly and likeable. He was from the deep south, had little education and did odd jobs. But, he and my aunt were avid meeting and field service attenders, and most importantly, they gave parties! He was so anxious to make elder and finally did. He was old fashioned and narrow minded in his views of women's roles and had no children. Those poor people who had to abide by his decisions- he had no idea what he was talking about! My exjw friend at work and I shake our heads about our elder co-worker. He needs lots of new light (dim bulb, lol)! I said, "Ohmigod, C., and he's sitting on a comittee meeting tonight!" It's really not funny...

Jan 1st WT: Reaching out, Higher Education and Providing for one's needs
by truthseeker inwell, as a nice start to the new year, the jan 1st watchtower article, "how firm is your trust in god" blasts those who live comfortable lives, those who don't reach out, and those who pursue higher education.. definitely, they are taking a harsher stand, having completely painted themselves into a corner.. i highlighted the interesting comments.
i did not include all the text for each paragraph, just the main points.. .
1 a young man wanted to be more useful to the congregation.

My father "reached out" for those thankless "priveleges" for forty years! He ran his a** off. He's 75 years old now and has some health issues that take up a chunk of his time with doctor visits. He got sick and tired of the backstabbing and rivalry among elders and stepped down to attend to his health. The feuding was just too demanding. When others see this sort of garbage, they don't want to be ministerial servants or elders. You'd have to be nuts! I still don't see why they don't realize that little education equals little income, equals little donations coming into the Crooklyn coffers, duh! Aren't they shooting themselves in the foot?

Should people try to speak the language of the land when visiting?
by JH inas most of you know, i live in quebec (90% french) and i was at the convenience store a moment ago.. there was a lady from ontario in her 50's who stopped at the conveniece store to ask the clerc for directions in english.
the girl at the cash tried her best to speak english and give her the right directions.
then a client came in the convenience store and saw the lady talking in english.

I think it's kind of rude to expect to be spoken with in English when traveling to another country. They live there, we are only visitors and nobody has to cater to us. When my hubby and I visited Spain, I was all geared up to get us around in Spanish. Darn it, most of them wanted to practice thair English on us! We shared an outdoor table with a lovely French couple in Cordoba. They spoke Spanish and French, my hubby English and German, and I speak English and Spanish. We wound up using Spanish! In Mexico, everyone spoke English. Now, in London we had trouble! The accents were just fascinating to listen to, but if they talked too fast, it was hard. Then we were told the Brits get a kick out of listening to us too, lol!

What's The Most Scandalous Thing You've Seen Happen In A Congregation?
by minimus inmany years ago i remember suddenly how the bible study servant who was third in command got removed from his position, and was reproved for having a fling with his bible student who was much younger and very married too.
actually, her husband came in the hall while he was substuting as a watchtower conductor and i was reading and screamed all sorts of profanities to him all the while screaming that he was "f***king his wife"!
when the man told him, "i wanna talk to you", the elder said, "not now".

I remember a Ministerial Servant, brother K, 38 years old who was discovered to be f****ing little sister R, 15 years old. He got a public reproof but the girl's mother was livid! It was in the early 80's, and nobody thought of reporting it, she was a tall girl for her age and was just seen as "precocious." Then, sister J, mother of 5, ran away to a nearby town with elder H. and they got an apartment. They were so unrepentant about it! After just a short time, brother J. invited sister H. for a dinner date. She blushingly approached the elders asking, "Would it not be appropriate for J. and I to date each other, since the our spouses are together?" She was so naive, for a woman in her early 50's, seemed to feel almost obligated to hook up with brother J, guilty because her husband had taken his wife. Then there was elder M, whose wife simply did not have sex. Period. In his "weakness" he "fell into sin" with the wife of a man he studied with. He got disfellowshipped since he was such a prominent elder in the circuit, sat in the back and was sometimes in tears. He was reinstated in about a year. That was sad, the kindest man, just so terribly neglected at home. That lonely man got harsher punishment than the pedophile Ministerial Servant!

Would You NOT Do Business With a JW Simply Because He's a JW?
by minimus inwould you discriminate against a person simply because he was a witness?
-
Virgogirl
There are good and bad workers at any business, but remember, they are supposed to be giving a good witness all the time, even at work. So, maybe more should be expected of them. Their exemplary conduct is supposed to be drawing interested ones to Jehoopy 24/7. That being said, my elders at work get a lot of customer complaints for their rudeness and arrogant attitude. Everyone jokes about the one especially, who is always whining about every little thing and is known not to work any harder than he can get away with. He is a real complainer! When mandatory overtime is called, he always says it's meeting night and he can't stay. He will do whatever it takes to get out of working. If we give him a job, he drags it out all day, so he doesn't have to come back and do another one. Some have said they'd never check out the KInkdum Hall after seeing how T. behaves! He has called in sick before to attend a weekend assembly, if all the vacation slots are full.

They tell you not to go to college. Then, if you go, they look up to you! Our congregation had Dr. M. He had a nice house with a swimming pool, nice car, pretty wife, well dressed kids, etc,. and was held up as an example of a fine brother. Needless to say, he made elder in no time at all. Everyone made appointments at Dr. M's office, that is, when he wasn't vacationing at his family's favorite Mexican resort. They always spent the entire month of April in Acapulco and that was just fine.
