  Is the "new light" doctrine scriptural?

  i already heard one argument on this, that the scripture referred to (proverbs 4:18) in context was actually advice of a father to his son on how during his life he would continue to grow spiritually throughout his life.

  but a closer look shows that there is no mention at all of new light, in any context.

  it says "but the path of the righteous ones is like the bright light that is getting lighter and lighter until the day is firmly estblished" [analogy: from darkness of the night gradually to the full light of the day?].

  "new light" is really a trigger word for JWs... a way to explain away anything that might trouble them. It stops them from asking questions. They must accept all "new light" as part of their faith. Thus the society can call any change "new light" and it has immediate credibility. It's not scriptural at all. I even pointed this out to an elder, even read the scripture. to him. His answer was that it didn't matter if it wasn't in the Bible. We were to follow the FDS.

  Just another reason I'm no longer there.

  I need Help on a Research Project

  i am currently writing a research paper on why people become jws.

  i would greatly appreciate it if many of you fine people could tell me the reason(s) why you joined the jws.

  those of you born to jw parents, please chime in also.

  I was born into it. My Dad was born into it...his parents became witnesses along with a group of friends who had immagrated from Sweden. My mom converted because she was looking for answers. Someone she loved died, and the jws were there at the right time with what sounded like all the right answers.

  if you could go back intime and change just one thing...what would it be...can be something in your life or in history that would have changed your life but something more original than being contacted by jw.

  I would have finished college. My Dad was a prominent elder who really believed in education. I had his total support in going to college, and I didn't realize at the time that I had it made. I left to marry a jw for a few reasons...one of which was that I believed that there would be no jw who would want to marry a sister with a college education....and there was lots of pressure from my friends in the cong. for me to quit college. If I had finished, my life would have been completely different.... I wouldn't have married the jw who turned out to be a nightmare, and I wouldn't have had to spend all those years undoing the dammage and trying to make up for lost time.

  I have an awesome job, and I'm dating a wonderful mam, but it took me ages to get here.

  She is actually receiving morphine for any possible pain...which tells me they can not guarantee that she isn't feeling anything. What bothers me is that Michael Sciavo will not allow a Catholic funeral for his devout Catholic wife, and that he is insisting on cremation. It's things like this that make me question his intent to do what Terry wanted.

  I wasn't accusing you of arrogance at all. If it came across that way, I am sorry. I don't espouse a particular point of view. Frankly, the more info I hear about this whole situation the more conflicted I am. It is an emotional issue, not just a legal one. We are not just dealing with legalities and technicalities, we are dealing with a human life, . I see so much anger on both sides... and the sad part about it is that the media (who are businesses after all) are milking it for all it's worth. None of us know all the facts no matter how much we listen to. We know only what they choose to tell us, and they filter it through their own world view. They make money by polarizing us.

  My heart aches for Terry and her loved ones.

  The law is not infallible, and it is because of cases like this that changes occur in law. I wouldn't say that USA is a "liberal rag", but I would also not call them unbiased by any streach of the imagination. I would also say that you could hardly call that article an in depth discussion of the subject. If you are to be open minded, you cannot just site publications you like and discount those you don't. That is intellectual dishonesty...and it was also the training we had as dubs...(discount all other sources of info but the watchtower.) Hopefully, we have grown beyond that.

  I think some have traded following of the watchtower for following the views of a political party, and accepting the talking points and agenda of said party. Maybe it's something in the human psyche that seeks to align oneself with such a group. Personally, I like to learn as much as possible about any given subject before even expressing my opinion. I think an opinion that is based on group think isn't worth much. Nor is an opinion based on false or incomplete info worth much. I fought long and hard for my right tor independent thinking, and my opinions are my own....finally.

  i think i may have just precipitated my exit from the watchtower a little sooner than i expected.

  i was really looking forward to attending easter services at a local church today, and so made arrangements to ride with a friend of mine and his wife.

  my friend is a recently disfellowshiped former fellow elder.

  What media outlet we listen to shapes opinions to an unbelievable level. I was with a group of friends yesterday and this subject came up. They were completely unaware of many of the facts of this case because the news outlet they listen to didn't cover those facts. That didn't stop them from having strong opinions though. I listen to every outlet I have access to, and read several newspapers. I'm on the road a lot for business, and listen to news throughout the day, and I change channels often.

  Please recognize that what you listen to/watch/read shapes your opinions. They all have an agenda and slant, and it influences what they cover and how they cover it. That is true for every TV channel, Newspaper and Radio Station. Listen to more than one side of the issue! I listen to as much as is possible....and I see the biases clearly. This is not all black or white! It is an excrutiating situation for everyone involved, and for those of us who must helplessly stand by and watch.

  when i was about 10 years old me and my service partner called on a guy that came to the door with a shotgun.

  he just said in the most deadpan voice you can ever imagine: ""if you don't get off my doorstep within the next 30 seconds im going to have to use this.

  " that was some scary shit.. we bolted.

  This one happened to my mom (who passed away long ago) We were "vacation pioneering" in Vermont. My mom was talking to a lady at the door, and a bird landed on her head...and clung to her hair! My mom freaked out...and the lady laughed hysterically. Took a while to remove the bird....it was during the 60s, and my mom teased her hair and used lots of hairspray...
