i hope all of you genx-r exjw will get a kick out of this story from my childhood.

i was just talking to jt and he says i should post it..... my daughter is studying wwi history in school.

i told her that when i was in 10th grade, i had a social studies teacher named nancy galbraith.

I turned in short paper in seventh grade about evolution/creation. I used the jw creation book, of course, and I pulled a quote in that book from Carl Sagan. I made that quote the focal point of my paper, and it got ridiculed by my teacher. He was an atheist and believed in evolution, and he asked me why I would quote an atheist who believes in evolution to try to support a paper on creation. I felt stupid, and I couldn't figure out how using the creation book had earned me scorn from my teacher.

Now I get it!

My new tactic is to make a joke that makes their question sound silly. My favorite, "Well, I'm just struggling with this serious heroin problem right now, so I only miss meetings when I'm high or selling automatic weapons to support my habit."

They usually laugh and say something like, "right, right. How's the family (work, house, whatever)?"

Of course, I've never been good friends with someone who would ask about my meeting attendance, so when I get that question it's only from people I don't feel obligated to discuss my situation with.

i was born and raised a jw.

however over the last year my husband and i gradually have faded away.

several times weve had discussions with my parents, whom are both in, regarding our disgust for the org and the reason for our decision to leave.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I agree with Dave, it is very unlikely that your mother's love was based on sharing the same faith. It's just that she has been taught to believe that your life is in grave danger if you are not a witness. This is obviously very upsetting to her, because she loves you. In the end, that love may be the catalyst that lets her finally question the watchtower corp.

i want to turn this forum on its head for this thread.

i'm here on this forum to find as many truths as is possible relating to jwism.

i'm not really here to stick the boot in although once in a while my emotions might get the better of me.

I think the most important thing to do is to first put the personal experiences on the back burner, and look closely at the policies and rules made by the society. Research for yourself such issues as disfellowshipping, the faithful and discreet slave, does the bible point towards a governing body, etc. Once you have a firm grasp on the basic issues, it becomes easy to see where the behavior of individual jws comes from. The individuals themselves are probably ok people, but they are influenced by the policies of the governing body, which leads to shunning, judgmental attitudes, and so forth. Thus you end up with many, many horror stories of personal bad treatment that people on this board have been through. The fact that a few of them could be exaggerated or made up doesn't change the fact that this stuff does happen, and it happens for a very explainable reason.

They're toying with the witnesses, in my opinion. They have mastered the art of "saying without saying". They will manage to get people in a frenzy when that time draws close, and then when nothing happens they will say that they never pointed toward that date. It's old hat by now.

I personally had several occasions growing up where I thought I saw some type of spirit. The truth is, though, at least in my case, that I heard about the dangers of demons from the second I came into the world. I heard tons of scary stories about dancing smurfs, porcelain dolls that could throw a grown man across a room, pictures and books that wouldn't burn, mirrors that reflected faces of demons, demons holding down witnesses in their bed so hard they couldn't breathe, etc. As a tiny child, nothing I heard made a deeper impression on me than those stories. I grew up morbidly afraid of demons. I was afraid to climb the stairs by myself.

Looking back, I resent very much that I grew up in fear, and I have no doubt in my mind that any "spirit" or weird happening was just my impressionable mind working overtime. I'm not saying that is the case here, but don't underestimate the power of suggestion. If I were you, I would at least try to mentally go over how much your child has heard about spirits, ghosts, or whatever.
