Good thread; I agree wholeheartedly. I was just telling my mom the other day the witness culture is a caste system. She ignored me and started talking about something else.
I have been at different places in that system; right now I guess I would be considered inactive and marked.
i want to say how brave i think all of you are for stepping out of the jw's, even if it's hidden (those of you still going).
whenever witnesses would knock on our door, i always felt they were ok and just worshipping god in the way they felt was right.
i never knew it came with soooo much stress and shunning if one does not comply.
Thank you for the kind words. I was born in and did not even really question things until last year. I feel fortunate to have found the info on this site and others like quotes which gave me the whole picture.
1. was he the son of god and some kind of god himself?
2. was he an extremely intelligent man that manipulated people and made himself appear to be fullfilling the prophecies about the messiah?
3. was he a dellusional nutter?
I personally don't care who he really was. I am only interested in the overall impression he gave, which to me was one of individuality. The impression I get is that he flew in the face of every ridiculous tradition and prejudice, and for that I admire him, whether he was a real man or a fictional character dreamed up by someone who longed to see those kinds of changes.

Good thread. I was appalled when I found out that the society used to print such things, and that assemblies used to be segregated. It took days for that to sink in. There were always little things that bothered me about the org, but I always truly believed that as witnesses we were the only ones that truly didn't have racial barriers. I am ashamed for the org that there is such damning material out there. How many active black witnesses do you think have any idea what the society used to teach?

I gasped when I read your post. Emshawf (I don't know the spelling either, but I know there was an "f" sound at the end. He was our DO. He had chiclet teeth and talked in an up and down sing song voice. He was single when he died recently. Interestingly, he dated Teresa Graves long ago, who was on Laugh In, and they almost got married. I don't know why it didn't work out, but I found him quite interesting.

the bad news: it has just been announced at the kingdom hall today that as of now the watchtower is being translated into 152 languages instead of what used to be 151.

i like to gain insight, get perspective on what it is like to be "on the other side" i guess you can say.

sorry how long this is but i found the meeting very exciting.
the short version is i said directly that i do not believe in the wts, feel being d/f is unfair on my jw family so asked them to just leave me alone.

Gumby, it doesn't matter anymore. The only difference is on their little slip of paper. They make the same announcement no matter what happens. They have blurred the line between df'd and da'd, because they need to show legally that they are only an organization that follows certain rules, and if anybody does not want to follow those rules, they are no longer part of the organization. It takes the legal heat off of them if they can say that a person decided by their actions that they are no longer one of jehovah's witnesses. And that's exactly what they'll announce: "Jwfacts is no longer one of jehovah's witnesses".
