Well, it's not my first Halloween... but it will be my boyfriend's 3rd since getting out of the WT organization... and he loves everything about it. He gets very excited about holidays, so I try my best to do as much Halloween related stuff with him as possible because it's almost like having a little kid celebrate stuff in a way. I know that might sound demeaning, but it's really not. It's just that with all of the holidays he is experiencing them like a little child would... he has like a sense of wonderment at them. So I do with him everything that someone might do with a little kid... we carve pumpkins, go to corn mazes, go to this thing called "fright fest" at the Six Flags near us, we decorated his apartment with pumpkin lights and little bats and stuff, and we're dressing up. :-) He LOVES to dress up. Last year I was a cat (a sexy one!) and he was Gilligan (you know, from Gilligan's Island). This year I am going to be a gypsy and he's going to be a beatnik.

HALLOWEEN! What's cool or fun about celebrating?
by Now What? inthis is my first halloween as a free man .
so i looked up the word halloween and discovered some really cool things.
for instance, the word comes from "all hallows eve", because of being the night before the feast of martyrs (all saints day).

So NO Russians ever walked on the moon? None?
by AlmostAtheist inhey guys,.
i was reading popular science and i staggered across a line that suggested that russia had never landed men on the moon.
that struck me as blatantly false, i knew i'd seen footage of cosmonauts on the moon.

I actually am usually not much for conspiracy theories... I think a lot of them are ridiculous and stupid... but I have my doubts about ANYONE being to the moon as well... I HAVE seen documentaries about this... but of course, a documentary can point out important things, but they can try to convince people of anything if they put their own biased slant on it. So I know you don't want copy and pasting from websites... some of that stuff is convincing, some isn't. But my main thing for why I DOUBT it (and I'm not saying I know FOR SURE, but I do have my doubts) is look at how unsuccessful NASA is right now. Look at all the mistakes they make now. They can't seem to get anything right. (I know some people probably will want to argue that). But just with everything that goes on now and how they can't get it together, I have my doubts that in the 60s they had it more together and were walking around on the moon. Also, I think (POSSIBLY) it could be that the U.S. government decided to fake it because there was so much excitement, so much competition, being generated by the Space Race. But again, these are just doubts, I don't claim to know for sure.

Am I over reacting?
by lola28 inmy sisters came home yesterday and said someone was following them home from school, they got very scared and ran the rest of the way home.
they also told me that these two men had also followed one of their friends home a few days ago.
should i call the school and report it or should i call the police station?
-
kristyann
I would most definitely do something about it... call the school and the police both... like everyone else said, you have to have it on record, whether they are teens or adults or whatever. Teens do stupid sick things, too... they're not always just fooling around. Just have it on record in case anything further happens... to them or to anyone else.

Penton & the drama this year
by carla inin the book apocalypse delayed by james penton he describes a 'drama' on pg 101-. the greatest emphasis was again placed on the preaching work, and jesus was described as a pioneer.in an assembly drama or 'morality play' on the apostle paul's companion timothy, young persons fresh from high school were strongly discouraged from attending academies of higher learning, and an always laten watch tower animosity towrads university education bacame more evident.. this sounds just like the drama from this summer.
i was under the impression that some jw's thought this was a new drama.
do they just recycle this stuff all the time?
-

I noticed from reading the various WT publications (books, Awake and The Watchtower magazines) that practically EVERYTHING is recycled. This is not to offend anyone that was ever a JW... but when I look at the articles that are used for the weekly Watchtower studies, I wonder how the dubs do not realize that these articles are almost always THE SAME. I mean, I read them pretty frequently just to see what's going on, I like to keep up to date... and once in awhile something really stands out, like the recent attacks on education (they hadn't done that for awhile, and they had loosened the reins on higher education, and it seems they're trying to tighten the reins again)... so once in awhile something like that really stands out... but other than that it is always the SAME OLD THING. And it is always very light. I know JWs are very well trained and versed in saying what they want to say and in arguing with people at their front doors, and at turning questions around so as to avoid answering them... but these articles are like something that a 4 or 5 year old should be reading. They are the same thing over and over again. Not only is it a messed up Bible, it's like the Bible Lite... actually, the Bible Super Lite Lite. I can see a 4 or 5 year old picking up on the fact that these are the same from week to week... do the dubs realize this as well and just not say anything because they're scared, or do they really not realize it? (Again, this isn't meant to offend.)

JWS and Body Piercings!
by kristyann inthis may sound strange, but do jws have any specific teachings on body piercings?
i know that mormons do... they only allow females to have one piercing in each ear and then they must wear "tasteful, modest earrings"... in other words, i don't think they're wearing big hoops or dangling chandalier earrings... but what do jws think about piercings?
my boyfriend's sister got her eyebrow pierced... and her "jw" parents encouraged it.

Thanks to everyone who replied and contributed to the discussion! It really helped me out... I was always kind of curious about this. Don't worry, I wasn't scared away... sometimes I have limited access to using the Internet and I cannot join in on the discussions as much as I'd like to... plus I have a big lab practical that I am studying for. Talking about Jehovah's Witnesses is a lot more interesting than studying for my lab practical, though, that's for sure!

And can anyone recall experiences relating to piercings, things said in your specific congregation about it, etc?

Can JW beliefs contribute to suicide?
by TD init may sound like a strange question, but aspects of jw behavior that are incomprehensible to outsiders actually make a morbid kind of sense when viewed through the lens of jw doctrine.
for example, about 10-12 years ago there was a single mother in my wifes congregation.
during the course of conversation, she learned that my wifes grandmother had recently passed away.

I have always heard that a lot of JWs commit suicide... but I don't know any personally. I do know, however, that when my boyfriend was involved with the Watchtower organization, and also right after he got out and was having all kinds of trouble about it, he cut himself, and attempted suicide twice. Also, his younger sister is a very depressed girl... she seems very disturbed, and their mother said that she used to always find notes in her room that wrote about suicide, death, etc.

Paintball and Lazertag - Can True Christians Play?
by truthseeker ina friend in my congregation enjoys playing paintball from time to time.
others play lazertag.
now, while these may imitate the "concepts of war", has there been any society comments on these games?
-
kristyann
I don't have access to one of those cd-roms or anything, so I couldn't tell you if the society has made any comments on paintball or lasertag... but I bet it's only a matter of time before they do, if paintball increases in popularity. I told you all about my boyfriend's JW parents and how they are really really loose with their rules and pick and choose which WTS rules they will obey...so in other words, they're not hard-line at all... but when their one son (my boyfriend's younger brother) asked if he could play paintball with some friends, they absolutely forbade him to do so because it involved GUNS. They seemed horrified at the idea. However, I think that what they really didn't want was to spend the money on it (or for their son to spend his money on something like that)... I have noticed a pattern over the years of their picking and choosing rules that allow them to spend as little money as possible (i.e. no Christmas because they'd have to buy presents so they like that rules... no sports because they'd have to buy uniforms, etc... but when it comes to free Thanksgiving meals that they don't have to pay for, they are all for it!)
But anyway... if they increase in popularity I bet they'll say something about it... just like with chat rooms, the internet, etc.

My boyfriend basically just told his parents how he felt about JWs and not being one anymore... they were pretty mad but he felt better just coming out and telling them. I know that might be harder for you, because maybe your family is better than his and you don't want to lose all contact with them... but his family consists of such abusive losers that he couldn't really care less. It was easier for him to just outright tell them he would not be going to their Kingdom Hall (or any Kingdom Hall) straight out. Then, last year we went shopping for his first Christmas tree! We actually got a really nice artificial one at Walmart (yes, at Walmart... I am not lying, it looks really good!) But anyway, he was so excited to do all the Christmas stuff for the first time. It was really thrilling. He and I went shopping with my mom and we had this big Christmas tree box and garland and lights in a couple of shopping carts, and we mentioned how funny it would be for them to be in Walmart and see us doing this. So we kind of got kicks out of that... but again, if your family's something worth holding onto, I can see how it would be more difficult for you to outright tell them.

This is so wrong !!!!!!!
by lola28 inmy god i can't believe what i just saw.. i was on the website for my local police dept.
and saw a link they had for a website that listed sex offenders.
i clicked on it and put in my zip code, i could not believe how many sex offenders live in my area, what is worse is that i know two of those listed and i never, ever would have thought that they could be a danger to children.. what bothers me so much is that many of these offenders commited crimes against children, i would say that a good 90% of those listed had been convicted of molesting children.how do these people live knowing what they have done?

kristyann
I have a question... this might sound stupid, but what do the thumbs up and thumbs down mean next to some of the topics? I noticed this one had a thumbs down, and I have no clue what that means.
I think it's important to always make sure to check out those sex offender sites to see if any live near to you. They are helpful to some degree... however, I heard that like 80% of sex offenders that have been caught and are now out do NOT follow their parole conditions.... i.e., they do not stay where they are supposed to, they do not notify the police when they move, etc. Also, I bet most sex offenders are not registered and a good deal have never been caught. I would urge EVERYONE to write to their Senators and representatives in Congress to push for stricter sentences for sex offenders... they almost always repeat what they did again. How many of them go to prison and actually turn their lives around? Ha, that's a laugh. Most sit there in prison and long for the day they can get out and plan their next attack. I despise sex offenders and I think every single one should never see the light of day again. They should be made to sit in prison until they die... and they shouldn't have some luxurious prison experience where they get to sit and order which foods they want and watch tv and movies and exercise and work and EARN MONEY.
