July 4, 1988. Even though it was supposed to be a life changing decision, my life didn't change - I basically did it 'cause I was the only person in the cong. over 13 who wasn't baptized yet. You know, nothing I did helped me to fit in with them - even after baptism I was treated like I was unwanted, so I left shortly after. Lucky me :)

Domestic Violence?
by alamb inhas anyone ever addressed the incidence of domestic violence in witness families?
i am relatively new here and don't want to cover old ground.. thinking back, i can name multiple examples of households in each congregation i attended where domestic violence was evident.. i have an active protective order against my ex.
who is still active in the congregation he attends.

When this was happening in my family the elders defended my step-father as well, and he wasn't even a baptized witness, just a bible-study. We were told that "In our home he is the leader of the house-hold and can set forth any rules he sees fit as long as they don't contradict scripture - and he can set forth any punishment he wants up to but not exceeding beating us unconciousness."
After he stopped studying and got involved in drugs our lives were miserable, but the elders stuck to their guns, and unfortunately for us he knew that my mother, a devout witness would not be permitted to leave unless he committed adultery - so he could do whatever he wanted with the elders blessing.
And THIS is supposed to be "God's organization", I think not!

Psychological Impact
by individual init is said by jws that 'the truth' never leaves you.
even when you have broken free, you will still be haunted by it, watching the news just in case they were right.
have any of you had these feelings?

I had the same exact question when I first found this board. I was spending my life walking on eggshells for a "religion" that I had no intention of ever returning to. My problem (and possibly yours too) is that I felt that I had turned my back to God, and that every day I denounced the JDubs I was reconfirming my association with Satan.
I can tell you now - That is not the case. The WTBS is a cult - they are big, they are organized, they are powerful in their own minds, and they use that power to sap the will and spirit out of their desciples. You have to let it all go, I know how hard it is - I've been there. But I did it, and so can you - if you want to celebrate Christmas, do it, if you want to read a book or see a movie instead of spending every waking hour forcing literature on poeple who aren't going to read it anyway, go right ahead. Eventually you won't have that feeling that you are betraying anyone, and then you will be free. Do all those harmless things that you denied yourself for so long - go to Las Vegas and gamble a little, go to parties, have parties of your own. The point is to LIVE - you have been spiritually and socially restricted, now you have to readjust. That is what you are feeling - transition from one way of life to another, because being a JW is not just a religion, it's a way of life, they had an influence on your every action, thought and deed.
You have stood up to them and said "I'm not taking it any more!"
So, don't take it any more - live for yourself, live for your family, just live.
Good luck and best wishes to you and yours.

I found this site while searching the net. I never knew anything like this existed. This was the first site I found - not counting the borg's home page. I lurked around a few forums before returning to this one. Simon's site just seemed more hospitable and friendly than the others.
I have learned a great deal here:
1) WTBS history - you certainly don't get that at the meetings.
2) There are people out there who can help when you are confused or "lost" - a bunch of them are here.
3) I never knew there were more predictions regarding "the end" - I knew about 1975, but the others were new to me.There is soooo much more, my list would never end. Suffice it to say I'm glad I found this site, and I intend to continue unlearning JW teachings.

What Will Occur In 2012 When Mayan Calender Ends?
by Big Jim inwhat will occur in 2012 when the mayan calendar ends?
when people say the mayan calendar ends in 2012, they're referring to the end of one 5125-year cycle that began in 3114 b.c.
this cycle ends on december 21, 2012 (although some peg the date as the 22nd), marking the end of the mayan cyclical calendar.

Circle of friends
by mommy ini have a circle of friends.
the kind of friends you can pop in whenever you are in the area, without a phone call first.
the kind of friends i would allow to enter my house if i wasnt home, to borrow sugar, flour, toilet paper, etc, if they needed it.. we are a close knit group and watch out for each other.

This is a terrible thing - I'm so sorry to hear you're in trouble. It's too bad these organizations are so robotic and burocratic since the idea behind the faces is to protect children. Unfortunately it seems they are more interrested in harrassing good people that seeking out those who really do harm to kids.
Again, I feel for you. You and your family are in my prayers.

belly up to the bar, guys and gals
by unanswered inwith all the confrontation/negativity on the board these last few weeks, maybe we all need to sit back and have a drink, or a cup of tea or coffee, if alcohol's not for you.. seriously, i'm not trying to pretend that i haven't gotten caught up in the negativity at times, or trivialize important issues/feelings, but things haven't been as fun, lately.
i've noticed a change even in the short time i've been posting.
i didn't start this topic to point fingers or to act like my opinion is somehow special, but wouldn't it be nice for all of us to see an increase in civility?.

A good 12 year old scotch will do me just fine.
I have found myself comming to the board less frequently of late precisely because of this point. I found this site to be refreshing and helpful, full of kind and caring people. Lately it seems the kind ones have taken a vacation and left the board in the hands of foul and argumentive ones.
I don't think we'll al ever agree with everything everyone else thinks, that's part of the spice of life, but to voice our opinions in a constructive fasion and to carry on a civil conversation is the mark of a mature adult. I hope we all can revert back to the harmony we had a month and a half ago - the board changed that swiftly.
Relax a little and enjoy life.

Isn't it weird how Jehovah's Witnesses think God has a hand in everything. I know because I once thought that way. If I was late it was because God was teaching me a lesson about punctuallity, if I was hurt it was because Jehovah wanted me to appreciate perfection when the new order arrived, whenever I was made to struggle for anything it was to becaused God was teaching me something. How naive I was.
