so a good friend of mine e-maild me today with this information.
aparently brother hurd says as of 2010 all the magazine printing and distribution will be moved to canada.
the only printing the us will do is the books.
Will magazines printed for the US in Canada be mailed from the Canadian printery? Or, will they truck the magazines destined for the US across the border into the US before mailing them? Seems like it'd be very expensive to mail them from Canada to the US. Anyone know how they plan to get the magazines over to the US?

I mentioned above that I felt Knocking was more of a sympathetic film about JWs than a balanced one. To illustrate, I'd like to share this discussion that was posted on the Knocking PBS website a couple of years ago. It shows the evolution of the "Myth or Reality" statement that appeared on the Knocking site about JWs and higher education.
http://discussions.pbs.org/viewtopic.pbs?t=74362&postdays=0&postorder=asc&topic_view=&start=0
I had several emails with Joel Engardio on the subject and his first responses resisted making changes in how he explained the JW position. Then he made some changes but still resisted telling people that JWs were discouraged from going to college.
The website now says:
Since then, more young Witnesses began to attend college classes and many still do. Recently, Witnesses have been strongly encouraged to replace higher education goals with ministry work.
The current statement is closer to what I'd call "balanced," but he still can't admit on the website that Witness leaders discourage higher education for their members.

Drew said:
JWs to him are more like a tool he can use to get across a moral argument.
Exactly. If you read Joel's writings online, you can see his main focus these days is as a gay activist. I believe the real reason he got into the "Knocking" project was a political one.
The first words of the Knocking website says:
KNOCKING opens the door on Jehovah's Witnesses. They are moral conservatives who stay out of politics and the Culture War, but they won a record number of court cases expanding freedom for everyone.
And the opening of the Knocking video asks:
Is it possible for a morally conservative religion to stay out of the culture wars, to merely share their message not legislate it?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4agnPkzM01M&feature=related
It's ironic that his documentary on JWs "Knocking" is used in a very political way and the JWs by promoting Knocking are promoting his political stance about the culture wars.
Knocking makes many good points. But, I agree with Gayle that Joel paints the JWs through rose colored glasses. I believe that in order for him to get the JWs to cooperate in the production of the video he knew he had to handle some issues with "kid gloves." So, while the video gives the appearance of being balanced, there is much that is not discussed or minimized.
rutherford's book "children" printed in 1941 told brothers not to have children or get married before armagedon....the result?.

Just to confirm what Gayle said...
In the 60s we had a Circuit Servant (Overseer) named Russell Cantwell and he shared the story of how he met his wife. He was at Brooklyn Bethel in the 40s and his wife to be was a pioneer. They planned to get married when he left Bethel. Cantwell said that Knorr was not happy they were getting married. But he added, "That was before he met Audrey." Knorr got married to Audrey about 1951 or so and the Society's negative view on JWs getting married suddenly changed.

I know of a couple that got married during that time period and they told me that they had to get married by the Justice of the Peace. Their marriage was looked down upon by the people in the congregation and none of their JW friends would come to their wedding. Their friends went out in the field service instead on the day of their wedding.
i'm going to be invading the international convention in sd this week if anyone has any requests, i'll be glad to do my best to meet them.
books, recordings, video, notes on talks, pictures, etc.
it'll give me something to do..

I found these notes of the symposium's part on Education from this JW site:

… In field of education
Christian parents realize nothing is better for their children than divine education.
Is. 54:13
Jeh. is the happy God etc. What more can a parent want than for their kid to have everlasting life.
We steer them to things good but also direct them from dangers.
Liken finding child on a ladder… Why? Is he escaping something? No, just showing off for friends. As you look, the ladder is old and missing rungs. You don’t want the child on the ladder at all no matter the reason. What more, a thunderstorm is coming. The ladder is all the more dangerous.
College is like that ladder. It often promotes sex, drugs etc. Being on an old ladder doesn’t garentee a person get hurt, but it’s not wise neither is college.
Pro. (?)
Drama. A son gets a full scholarship. Moms concerned and goes to elder who directsbshe and her son to WT. Why do parents usually send kids to college.. To make a name for self and get rich.
Do Christians want that sort of environment for their kids? Eldernasks son how high school has been. He admits to immorality being rampant but has mom to fall back to for strength. When moving away to a college, he’d lose that safety net. Would be encouraged to put aside spiritual goals for awhile to pursue college. It could hinder spiritual goals and health.
What is the value of higher education. Could what you want to do be learned at a local vocational school instead.
Is 48:17
Ps. 91:1
Jeh. doesn’t leave us empty-handed. We need to seek first the kingdom of God.
Experiences of people who went to college yet couldn’t find work. She did everything she was “suposed to do” yet she started handing out resumees to strangers at nightclubs.
43% of college grads are underemployed. They get a job that didn’t need a degree.
Satan makes many promises but fails to deliver. Jeh shows us how to live and meet financial needs.
Experience- father offers to pay for college edu but son knew it wasn’t in his best interst. He knows nothing is free and was afraid it would cost him he spirituality. He took a technical class the last year of high school to become an electritian… ended up working as a computer engineer because of his first training. He still feels he made the right choice and now works with Quick Builds and flexibility of job has allowed him to regular pioneer for 6 years now.
Experience.. Was offered a scholarship. He always played sports but his family came into the truth in his sophmore year. His mom asked him to stop sports because of bad association. Senior year coach took him to a college and during some impromptu playing was offered full scholarship. Coach pushed his buttons about college being the responsible thing to do to care for disabled mom etc. Instead, he went into full time service. He didn’t make decission lightly. He examined lives of those who had went and what they went through… Ended up finding good job then started own business. Spiritual education helped him choose wisely.
Phil 2:20-22 What made Timothy different? He put kingdom interest above all. He has fame- we talk about him even today. Riches?- he is a king in god’s kingdom and has no need for money. Glory- he’s an immortal spirit creature.

The section on Education is particularly repulsive!
there's been a lot of talk on here about the crazy symposium at this spring's circuit assemblies, "stand firm against the devil's crafty acts.
" so, my wife and i decided to attend the assembly, or at least just this symposium anyway.
i recorded the whole symposium.. you can listen to the whole symposium (4 talks, >1 hour) here: http://www.watchtowerletters.com/media/devils_crafty_acts.mp3.
