I'm a convert and a revert. I entered the Catholic Church in 1992 and then spent a year and a half in Eastern Orthodoxy before returning to the Catholic Church in 2000. I am also a member of the Byzantine Catholic Church. Not many people know about Eastern Catholics (those who are in union with Rome) because we are much smaller than our Roman Catholic brothers. A good overview is at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Catholic_Churches
A more advanced explanation of Eastern Catholics can be found here:
http://orlandobyzantine.com/parish-news/2-parish-news/102-eastern-catholic-video
Essentially, Eastern Catholics share the same faith as Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodoxy but differ with Eastern Orthodoxy over the role of the Bishop of Rome. We accept his ministry for the Church. Eastern Catholics have some different theological emphases than the Roman Church and we also have married priests (which often surprises Roman Catholics).
A good intro to Catholicism from the ex-JW point of view can be found in these lectures and writings of John Coffey (an Australian Catholic lay evangelist):

A smaller intro can be found in "A Catholic Critique of Jehovah's Witnesses":

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It took a lot of courage to make the break, but you don't have to live a lie any more. Welcome back to the board!

The similarities between early Watchtower literature and early Adventist literature is striking. That only makes sense as they both share the same heritage with the Millerite movement. I was reading in Day Dawn (the first book published by Russell and crew after the start of the Watchtower magazine) and the "1844 movement" is spoken of quite favorably. The idea seems to be that William Miller almost had it right and now (in 1880 when the Day Dawn was published) they fully understood the time prophecies.

ROMANS 8:18-25 PROVES 2 CLASS WT TEACHING.. SAYS THE WIFE

Thanks Narkissos for these observations. Certainly, the idea of two classes of Christians is foreign to Paul's theology.

A question for former Bethelites....
Those in that picture on that 1984 Watchtower were old-timers at Bethel. I recognize a few of them, but not all. It would be interesting to post a picture of that Watchtower with the names of those Bethelites and note if any of them are still alive. I would guess that most of them have passed away by now.
I see Babette Herrlinger, Sophie Yuchienewicz (sp?), Harry Peterson, George Gangas, Mary Hannan....but I'm not sure of some of the others, though they look familiar.
Anyone else recognize a few faces?
Anyone know if any of these people are still alive?

How many here actually still believe that there is a God??
by annalice inafter being gone from the jw's for many years now , and having done extensive research on the history of god and the belief in him , i can't seem to find any logical way to have a belief in an invisble being up there ruling over us.
how many here still believe?
how many don't?.
-
cabasilas
I believe.
There are many things I cannot explain.
Still, I ponder: Why do we have a yearing for love? Why do we crave a good family life, good friends, a good marriage? Why do we universally scorn hatred?
I believe it's because we've been imbued with the need and desire for love by Someone. I believe that Someone is God.

Yearbook gift disguised as request for money
by startingovernow ini admit it, i used to love reading the yearbook.
when i got one i would have it read in about 3 days.
so imagine my joy when a bethelite asked me if i would like him to send me a copy before they were released to the general population of jws.

There may be some Bethelites who do that. I used to send out several every year without expecting a dime in return. It was kind of my own version of a "Christmas card" list. :)

Smaller PDF versions of 1928 & 1931 Messengers -- Can be emailed
by cabasilas ini've had a couple of requests for smaller pdf versions of the 1928 and 1931 messenger convention reports.
these are not searchable, but are easily read and are also bookmarked.
this should attach and email with many systems such as gmail and aol.

You're welcome, Atlantis and Nevada!
Some thoughts for those engaging in this email "service." If you email the 1931 Messenger and the subject of Beth Sarim comes up, you could do this as a "return visit" (or "back call" for some of you):
"Yes, that was interesting to read about that house in San Diego that Brother Rutherford lived in. I guess they really believed it was going to be used for resurrected prophets. Here's a PDF of an old Consolation (this was the magazine that was later renamed Awake!) from 1942 that tells the whole story about that place."
And then you attach this PDF (the May 27 1942 Consolation)....it's only about 5 MB. You can download that here:

All you've done is shared interesting old Witness publications that contain crazy stuff. You aren't sharing "apostate" materials. The stuff speaks for itself.
