Abortion Ban

i want to pass on something to you.

i don't know where you all stand on the matter, and it is a very sensitive subject to bring up to anyone.

but you know that law that was passed the other day?

As others have pointed out on the thread, this ban only affects one method of late term abortion, and infact there is an exception if the life of the mother is at stake.

As would characterize myself as moderately pro-choice; I think there can be some restrictions on abortion without eliminating it (or virtually banning it like in the case of the repealed law from South Dakota). I don't think this ban is quite the assault on abortion rights that some view it as. The overall "right to choose" is still very much here.

Hey, Six, I read the same dairy over there earlier today as well. A truly poignant story.

I happen to have strong pro-life positions personally, but I think women should have the right to make such decisions on their own. As the writer indicated, this isn't a black and white issue. So that makes me pro-choice politically.

As a New Yorker, I will certainly always remember that day. I can still remember the smoke I saw in the distance in the Manhattan air, all the uncertainty about whether there would be more attacks to come that day, etc. While I certainly have strong feelings of antipathy towards many of the actions taken by the government since then in the name of the tradgedy, I'm nontheless grateful that nothing of this magnitude has happened in the US since.

Stem Cell Research---Are You For or Against It?

I'm for embryonic stem cell research, and especially for the one that the US Congress is advocating. The embryos that are going to be used are ones that would have been discarded and destroyed anyway, so if we're OK with that happening (for the purpose of helping people "create life"), why is this any different in this case (the goal of the research is to preserve and enhance life after all)?

And as others have already mentioned, we're talking about undifferentiated cells here, not actual people or near term fetuses, etc.

Carlos Castaneda

i don't remember... but may have asked this a long while back.

is anyone here interested in or have any strong opinions of castaneda's books on the teachings of don juan matus?

i've always been deeply drawn to these books, even as a young child (my father, not a jw, introduced me to them and that type of "thinking" at an early age; though i often felt guilty reading them and thinking about the existence of the world in that manner since my mother raised me as a jw.

She will avoid the violating of her virginity and the shame and conscience-stricken state due to this; and wisely she will direct her young life so as to end up in the position of a clean, happy wife and mother of legitimate children, journeying to the new world of righteousness, where there will be no sex problems amid a sex-crazy population.

What the hell exactly is a "sex interview"? "The ovum at large"? Is it a fugitive or something? This entire article is weird.

If you were paid to be an active JW, would you accept?

I'd do it for a high enough salary, but I'd make sure that out in the service that I'd never make an even half way persuasive sermon and be as absolutely bland as possible so that I didn't convert anyone. As far as the stuff that only affects me (meetings, going to convention, etc.), I could find a way to get through it without going absolutely crazy. Like yesterday I went to the District Convention with my parents, and decided to walk with a portable radio so that I could listen to the convention on the FM band . I did all that I could not to cheer when Jason Giambi hit his second home run . All you have to do is find a way to amuse yourself a few hours a week and make some money. Isn't that what a lot of us do at our current jobs anyway?

More fun with witness urban myths.....

i have heard many urban myths associated with the watchtower society and its hapless adherents.

i like the one where an "interested one" accepted the invitation to attend the memorial one year, and sat next to a "sister" who let the confused attendee use her bible to look up scriptures as they were presented.

afterword, the "sister" walked the man up to the circuit overseer, who had delivered the talk that year, and introduced the dupe-filled "study" to the co. the co complimented the man on his spiritual interest and asked what impelled him to come up and talk to him.

I remember one about a pioneer couple who had invited the CO over for lunch but were short on money. They had just enough money to make their rent (or essential ultilty bill?), but since they had promised to have the CO over they decided to spend some of the money on food to prepare a meal for the CO (and be able to bask in his spirituality, I guess). Some time after having the meal but before their bill was due, they find some sort of envelope with the exact amount of money their rent (or bill) was worth. So now they had their bill paid as well as the extra money they still had. Presumably they had this serrendiptious experience due to their faith in Jehovah to provide for them. I excuse myself for having believed this drivel because I was about 9 or 10 when I heard it .

Will the average age of Witnesses go up with time?

my parents go to a catholic church, and they say that the average age is in the 60's.. at the kh, the average age is about 30, if you calculate the age of the children too.. theoretically, the average age of witnesses should go up with time .

if less and less people become witnesses, the average age should go up, just like traditional religions....no?.

First, you highlight the post you want to copy, right click and copy it. After that you paste the text to the post window (the 5th button from the left on the top row of icons. To the right of the "copy" button). After that, higlight the newly pasted text and hit the "quote" button (the last button to the far right on the top row of icons. The button to the right of the smily face). That ought to do it. As far as the topic goes, the average age will continue to go up if the JW's don't change their doctrines. However, I think that when the "old guard" at Bethel passes away, you'll probably see a loosening of rules and a more liberal religious atmosphere. It's either that or a slow death, and I think the JW's will choose compromise over death.
