I think I had enough of their pretend christian love and I actually wanted to be more worldly. I wanted girlfriends and possibly sex. When I found better more interesting friends at college I never looked back but at the back of my mind always worried that I would burn.

What was your first Apostasy?
by Dune ini'm re-reading 1984 and the similarities between the wtbs and the "party" astound me, but anyway, it made me think of the time when i started to get doubts (thoughtcrime).. i remember once at this book study a sister commented about the 1914 and was reciting it's historical accuracy.
anyway, she went on to mention that the demons were probably learning everything about biblical prophecies from the wtbs.
i was 13 at the time but the comment made me cringe, i was thinking "why would superior beings need humans to interpret the bible for them?

Who was Jesus really?
by Spectrum in1. was he the son of god and some kind of god himself?
2. was he an extremely intelligent man that manipulated people and made himself appear to be fullfilling the prophecies about the messiah?

Skyman,
THis is interesting stuff but i need proof. I know that Constantine was an unsavoury character he also killed his mother i believe but don't quote me on that.
THere is a possibility that the clergy back then realised that there was some fraud committed by the early Christians and so the clergy covered it up for the sake of power. It would have been their undoing.
Your other point about the Romans. If christ was going around performing miracles under the noses of the Romans then why was this not recorded. I can understand them not being interested in his teachings but miracles are head turning stuff even to the Romans who thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. -

Jake,
"Nobody bothered to look at what Jeus did untill he was long gone and the evidence was as well."
Maybe nobody looked because nothing of the sort happened. Maybe they turned some ingeneous guy into a legend to whom they later appended miralces. It's clever because nobody could prove it never happened. It was all faith based anyway. Maybe that's why the NT bangs on that faith is enough to save, desparate people will latch on to anything. -

"So please stop blindly parroting what the policy wonks and the Bush administration keep repeating as if to convince themselves that the U.S. is engaged in some righteous crusade to spread democracy and freedom around the world. Nothing could be further from the truth.
If you believe that you are a fool.It is about money and power that is all it is about and to an extent it is about the desire to do something, however misguided, immoral or consequential, so as not to feel helpless in response to terrorism.
"
Beautifully said.
I JUST WANT TO REMIND THE RIGHTEOUS ANTI-IRANIAN AMERICANS on this forum that despite the Iranian's misgivings they don't come close to US government crimes against humanity. So get off your high horses bow your heads in shame and beg for forgiveness.
Vietman (mass killing of innocents)
Chile(terrorism, political murder, kissinger)
El Salvador (terrorism)
Cuba (invasion)
Nicaragua (terrorism)
Israel (too sh*t scared not to support zionist white house infiltrators)
Iraq (chemical sales, sanction killing babies)
Algeria (supported Islamic fundamentalist village massacrers)
Taliban ( help put them in power)
Pakistan (support ruthless dictator)
Philipines (supported meglomaniac)
East Temor (mass murder)
Native Americans (near extermination, kind of reminds you of the Nazis)
And many others, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD TO THIS LIST
I really don't see how any American can talk about Iran begin wicked. If you want to talk about about wicked first admit and repent of your own wickedness then you'll have some moral excuse to talk about others.
Peace to all -

AA,
excellent analysis on how to read between the lines. This is my weak point when the BS is weaved well.
I especially liked your identification of loaded language, which you correctly identified as propaganda technique. -

Disfellowshipping - Pros and Cons
by Spectrum inwhen i was a jw i remember believing that disfellowshipping was jws great and distinguishing feature.
great, because it got rid of the people that didn't take our righteous path seriously and wanted the temporary trappings of the world including all the sinful stuff and brought them back into our puritanical line if they genuinely repented.
the congregation therefore maintained a high christain standard.

Confession.
"Your characterization of those who leave being those who "prefer to smoke or fornicate or whatever else" is, I believe, unfair. "
Unfair? Not really, because you'll see that I was specifically talking about the ones that were bringing down the side on a moral level and I thought it was our moral duty to remove these people from the cong. if they did not repent. I really like this difference between us and Christendom, it made me feel more of a true Christian.
"You do understand that many ex-JWs left because of coming to understand that the Watchtower Society is not what it purports to be, don't you?"
Yes I do? And these people have a right to get up and walk away. They were duped so disfellowshipping cannot be applied to them as the contract was broken, they should prove this to them and just walk away and just chalk it up to experience. It sounds silly and would set a precedent that could end the WTBTS but since most JWs don't see it that way the Org will ride it out.
If the individual can prove that the contract was broken by them then by definition the tables have turned and Org has apostasized itself so shunning cannot be applied to that individual unless they wish put their money where their mouth is and shun themselves. -

Narkissos,
"This is what the LORD says—
your Redeemer, "
I been through a few of the verses you point to and I find this one typical.
My interpretation is:
The Lord is also the Redeemer ie he is the Almighty God( Creator) but to the jews he was not just the Creator but a God that redeems(an aspect of His love perhaps). Eg As a human I'm the creator of my son but also his disciplinarian, but I'm still the same person in the singularity. The trinity is not infered at all.
Maybe the Lord wrong footed the Jews and sent someone they weren't expecting and were left scratching their heads!!
As christians we took it for granted that Christ was the Son of God - his first begotten. Where in the OT do the prophecies suggest that He would send his only Son? Did the Jews have a concept of Son of God? -

clam,
" interesting scenario, but why not offer the GB $10 million each to give it up and issue a statement saying they were off for the same reasons as Franz?
It would be cheaper and logistically easier."
Yeah I didn't think about that! Wind up the business kind of thing. The only problem with that is they don't deserve $10,000,000.
