Skyman,
How does the oil/US dollar currency thing work?
Why does it matter what currency you use to buy oil in?
How does it help the US to buy the oil in dollars?

I want to say...
by robhic ini have been reading this forum for a couple of years now and i know this point has been made before but i truly think it needs to be repeated.
i am not, nor ever was, a jw and only arrived here to acquaint myself with "jw-ism" because a friend had joined up.
i needed to study up on stuff so i'd be prepared to (try to) understand where she was coming from with all her new oddball dogmas.

My mother liked them because the average JW had knowledge from the bible whislt everyone else she knew didn't have a clue. She was an avid reader of the bible and when she found like minded people she got involved but only at the edges. From her own study of the bible she realised that christendom had it mainly wrong so when JWs came along she realised that they were close to her understanding of the bible.
She did end up criticising them for too many meetings, door knocking, too much talk of the devil and what he is going to do to you. As a result she wasn't duped into baptism. She realised long ago that christ saves not their bespoke FDS.
It just shows that studying the bible on it's own is enough to get its message.
I think that's very impressive. -

Generation Change
by slugga ini left the org slightly before the change in the "generation that was alive in 1914" thing was announced and wondered, what were peoples in the congregations reactions after this was announced and did it you notice people falling away because of it?
has it had a damaging effect?

The principle of it went straight over their heads because the clever new wording still allowed members to assume that the end was still in sight so no harm done. The doctrine still maintained the word "generation" and this word was still linked to 1914.
Not sure but I reckon that most JWs still believe they are never going to die. Con man Rutherford is still haunting these people.
digress
Is con man an unfair description for Rutherford? -

It's a good move from OBL. It's a win win situation for him.
It makes him look like someone that you can reason with, hence he gains some political credentials and credibility.
If his outstreched arm is rejected, when the next load of US citizens are blown away, the public will ask the zionists why they didn't take the deal?
If you can't protect us make a deal.
If they negotiate with him then he wins again.
If they kill him he wins anyway because now he is a martyr and the cause will continue. -

Jehovah's Witnesses are an Old Testament Religion
by truthseeker inthere's no doubt about it.. i did an experiment last year, at the conventions, assemblies and meetings to determine how often the symbol of christianity, jesus christ, is actually mentioned, talked about and discussed.
with the exception of the memorial, and even that was more on the wine and bread than on christ himself, there are no talks devoted soley to jesus christ and the work he did.
watchtower will make vague references to christ to back up there claims, such as matt 24:14, "this good news..." and "go therefore and make disciples...".

Is it true that there are 500 shareholders in this company? If so do we know who they are and what their dividens are?

Creatiolution. This could be the answer.
by Spectrum inthis is a continuation of a discussion i've had with abaddon.
we were at loggerheads in the beginning but i'm coming round to his way of thinking to a certain extent.
i still haven't given up my belief in an intelligent creator but at the same time there is evidence for evolution which cannot be discounted.

"Yet, you dont know if you can "be bothered" to actually study the scientific basis of evolution? Not sure if that makes me the "cocky" one."
Can't be bothered hence I keep an open mind.
"You make claims that the same evidence that evolutionary biologists use to support evolution can be used to support creationism. "
Yes, but not biblical creationism but what i described in my first post. -

"Repeated dna code is actually a very, very strong argument for intelligent design if you wish to interpret the facts as such."
Exactly, As are C++ template classes exactly the same code executed the only difference being types. -

Funky,
"If not, fine but don't expect to take part in serious debates on the subject."
Your a hard man!
Thanks for that reponse. You given me a lot to think about. I'm not sure if I agree with everything you said. You talk like, this is actually what happened. That bothers me so I have to look into it deeper.
Eg. your chinese lottery analogy, hmmm, is this an evolutionist's trick to get around the heavy probabilities that way down on the validity of their theory. I need to talk to a statistician about that.
qcmbr,
"Why I feel thats an incorrect assumption although it sounds so damning: Evolution defines the laws that govern biological adaptation - to apply it to God presupposes that He haas a physical body - an idea only believed in by a few religions. A non-material God wouldn't be explained by a purely materialistic theory.
"
Excellent point.
Shinning One,
"The same evidence came be used for creationism in many cases."
I believe so and that's what I trying to show here.
