What planted the seed of doubt that lead you to leave or think of leaving?
by NanaR ini've been thinking of this a lot lately.
the following experience ties my first doubt in with my present life.
as a backdrop to this, you should know that i was a 5th generation "raised in the truth" jw through my mother (her great-grandfather got "the truth" from pastor russell).

Is manned space exploration a waste of money?
by free2beme ini was watching a program the other day, and it mentioned some interesting things about exploring space.
1. nothing has been found on other planets that we need or would benefit from.
rather the opposite, we have found hostile environments that would kill us.. 2. the cost to get a man to these places is astronomical, and not something that would reap benefit to our planet.. 3. so far, nothing within reasonable traveling distance has shown itself worth an effort that would require man, and would not be done easier with machine.. so with this in mind, other then the travel we see with the space shuttle in our own orbit, that has shown some medical breakthroughs and so on.

The Hubble Telescope is wonderful. Glad to hear today that they are going to repair it and keep it going.
However, the other stuff, space station etc. is nothing more than a money/political hole. NASA is a huge parasite organization that must have fresh blood ($$$) to keep going. So they keep coming up with GEE WHIZ projects that reqire manned mi$$ions. Mars, the Moon or anything else to justify the huge amounts of money they require to survive. I think they should turn to the earths oceans. There is where some real answers lie for energy, food, etc. It has become a glaring oversight in the focus of resources by the worlds wealthy countries.

Do You Think That You Might Turn Back To Jehovah?
by Englishman ini`ve never yet been snubbed by a jw.
the reason is that i refuse point blank to speak to them unless they speak to me first.
so, if i`m visiting my jw mum and jw visitors arrive which they often do i just smile, raise one eyebrow slightly, and look `em straight in the eye!.

I was actually put in this position once by my overbearing aunt (the wife of my CO uncle). I was setting on the edge of another aunts bed. She was under heavy sedation because my uncle (brother of the CO) had just been killed in an auto accident. Several JW fam members were gathered around. I had been DF'd some months before. I was tearfully holding Aunt Junes hand and Aunt Overbearing Maggie came up behind me and said "it would be wonderful if you came back to Jehovah's organization and could be there when Uncle Ed is resurrected". I turned and looked her straight in the eye and said in a calm, firm, voice, "I will never go back to that nonsense". It was like I had thrown a glass of ice water in her face. In the 25 years since I have often wondered how many who heard my comment, either first hand or repeated later, have considered what I said and thought to themselves, maybe it is all "nonsense".

Did you ever wonder who the inventor is?
by Frannie Banannie ini'm talking about inventions that are supposed to make our lives a little easier, more convenient, more pleasant....... take for example that new-fangled flashlight that's been in tv ads for the past year.
it doesn't require batteries.
that's just wonderful, because battery-operated "conveniences" can have expensive feeding habits.

I am a long time subscriber to Popular Mechanics and consumer reports as well as a former sales manager for a firm that manufactured a very sophisticated piece of equipment that was patented by my boss and who was also the owner of the company. I often see very clever and unique items that really leave me in awe of the inventor. i am setting in front of one invention right now that totally impresses me.
The flashlight you refer to uses the same technology as a small radio that employs muscle power to create electricity and I understand that a computer is in the works to operate the same way!

Violence disguised as comedy
by Lady Lee inlately, here in ottawa, there is a tv ad for a comedy show.
it has a "teacher" in front of a 3 student class.
the teacher says that when he asks a question everyone should put up their hand.

The Monty Python troupe used to do skits that were satire on extreme violence. I recall one about a garden party where limbs were lopped off and blood was spurting everywhere. It was very, very funny. And of course the scene in "Holy Grail" when the black knight kept getting limbs lopped off until he was just a head shouting defiance. I think it was inspired comedy. I agree that some slapstick just doesn't work. A case in point was the movie "Home Alone". The kid inflicted horrible injuries on the two hapless burglars and I actually cringed at some of the stunts. I guess it's all about how it is done, do you agree?

Spend how much for wives/girlfriends?
by greendawn inhow much should a man tolerate a girlfriend or wife that is very demanding on clothes/shoes and other articles such as perfumes, handbags etc?
is there a limit to what one should spend to keep them happy beyond which it becomes a case of them taking advantage?

Lots of variables here. if the man is a geezer and she is is a young fox, then obviously he probably is going to make up for it in material "perks". But as a man I don't think a real relationship based on fiduciary compensation is very stable, ergo, I would not buy any luxery items on credit (Visa, etc). Bras, panties, toothpaste, food etc. are reasonable if you have decided to take her on as a companion under the roof your providing. But jewelry, perfume, expensive clothes-shoes are strictly for those who can afford a 'mistress'. If that is the case then knock your brains out!!

How do you combat laziness?
by AlmostAtheist ini didn't say "unmotivated" or "lacking direction" or any of the other euphemisms i typically apply to it.
i said what i meant, and i do mean it.. but i can't imagine it has to be this way.
surely there's something i can do to combat it.

I have to agree with the poster above who feels that it has a lot to do with boredom. Due to our recent move and getting a new home built I find that I am so busy all day with "putting out fires" and physical tasks that I don't even sit down to watch TV or read a newspaper (both formerly a daily ritual). In the evening, food never tasted so good, I never enjoyed a glass of wine or cocktail more, nor slept better.

Oh sure, go and talk to an elder about it. Like the older brother who's wife was terminally ill in our congregation. Clarence was one of the sweetest & good hearted people I ever knew. He went to an elder who he had known for years and told him he had been masturbating and was consumed with guilt in addition to dealing with his wifes decline in health. The elder basically shrugged him off with a "just pray for Jahs help" comment. The elder then told his wife who in turn told everyone she could, all in the spirit of having a good yuk. It got back to Clarence that his confidential confession had been turned into snickering gossip. He quit going to meetings and went into a depression that never left him until he died.
