Sleeping during meetings was stopped when I was about seven or eight. Up until then my mother would let me lay my head in her lap and sleep like a baby. She decided I was getting too old for that and then I had to set up straight and do the head bobbing on warm Sunday afternoons while Brother Dull Monotone gave the lecture.

My Bethel experience
by new boy inbecause of the length of this, it will be done in two parts.
part 1. i when to bethel march 21,1970. at the time you had to be a pioneer for two years to apply, by the time i left in 1974 they were calling people in who had never pioneered..........average stay was 5 months ( they had signed up for 4 years)..........the reason they left was......well, it was hell.. one of the reasons was, knorr hated bethelites, but he loved the gilead students and why?
because when they screwed up they were thousands of miles away!........just before i got there, they had kicked out over 60!

In the late sixties a young man from our cong. in Santa Barbara, Ca went to Bethel. His father was a servant and he had several JW family members. He showed up back in the cong. about 2 years later (as I recall) and was a different person. There was talk that he had had a 'nervous breakdown'.
Thanks for sharing New Boy. It would be great to get together over a beer with you and Craig. I'll buy the first round.

One of the elders wives in our congregation was obsessed with this subject and was a constant source of 'urban legend' type stories about JWs who had strange experiences. Like the TV coming on by itself when "Bewitched" was on. She got in trouble after convincing a sister to destroy a matching pair of new and very expensive table lamps because she could see a demonic face in their abstract design. When the husband (a JW himself) found out he went to the elder and told him to get his crazy wife under control. Ironically, the elder himself was a glassy eyed "anointed" one and as kooky as his wife.

GUMBERS NEEDS YOUR ADVISE.......
by Mary ini got a pm from gumby this morning.
as i predicted, he's being love-bombed by the congregation and invited out everywhere.
part of this is because he was very popular before and is a very likeable guy, but part of it is to try and suck him back in so thoroughly, he'll never be able to escape.

Seems like a lot of SciFi movies that impressed me when I first saw them have not aged well and now seem hokey. The great fifties classics were thinly veiled allegorys of the red scare/nuclear threat that dominated the fears of most people. They have held up pretty well, the themes seem timeless.
There have been some real corny ones, like Forbidden Planet (Robbie the Robot), Planet of the Apes, Soylent Green, Star Wars, and others that I seldom watch again.

When we say "I'm proud of you" are we elevating ourselves above others?
by Paisley ini don't mean when we as parents tell our children we're proud of them for a certain accomplishment or approved behavior; but when one adult tells another adult "i'm proud of you for (doing this or that)", possibly implying that in our opinion the approved action should have been done sooner, are we elevating ourselves above them?
could it even be a left-handed compliment?
as in "im proud that you've stopped beating your wife.

It depends on the circumstance. It might be the perfect expression in some situations. In the 'wrong' situation in could come across as extremely presumptuous and condescending.

Using the Gold Mine
by Gregor inthe archives of posts on jwd represents a gold mine of information, personal experiences and intelligent discussions.
i think it would be of real benefit, especially to those who cautiously peek in on the site (aka, lurkers), to be able to select from an index of subject matter.
there would be a subject reference address for the beginning of those threads that discussed the subject and include some special posts that were of particular quality in the realm of the jwd site.

The post I was using as an example can be found in "Beliefs, Doctrines & Practices" in the thread started by Greendawn called "Why did we (fail) to see the rather obvious signs"
An index would direct a person to cogent posts directly. Right now a newcomer would have to sift through thousands of posts to learn other viewpoints on a particular part of the JW experience.

Sorry I screwed up the link. I had to handwrite it on a piece of scrap paper. As we all know the 'reply' page here is unforgiving if you want to refer back to another screen while writing a response.
