  bad day, bad year

  spent all day today downtown being shuffled around to this building and that trying to get temporary assistance.. what a nightmare.. everyone tells you something different.

  and it's so humiliating.

  i didn't work my ass off for 17 years for this.. it's just very hard to think of losing my fiance, my house, my job, my cars, the use of my hands, electricity and heat, all in 8 months.

  Nic, I've been on the online exjw scene since January 1997. I've been a member here since 2001. I'm nearing 34 years old. I've posted my story a few times. Click on my name and topic history... I recently posted some info. on my DFing and other updated stuff. And don't worry about coming down hard on me. You should have heard me yelling and swearing today at the asshole who parked his car in a no standing zone cutting me and my mom off.

  edit: does my avatar really make me look that young? that's me doing an approximation of Alex DeLarge sans long hair from A Clockwork Orange. I'm always told I look young. A clerk ID'd me for cigarettes the other night and she was like "birthyear 1972! I'm sorry!" and I was like, no need to be sorry, I may look 18 but trust me, after open heart surgery, shot knees and back, and now my major disability with severed nerves I feel 80.

  All I was saying was, I enjoy playing poker for free since I'm stuck at home, and it is a game of skill, not mere chance. Sheesh guys, settle down. edit: and I said MERE chance. Sure there's some luck involved, like if I have pocket aces and an ace comes up on the river. But having pocket aces gives me a good chance of winning, if I know what I'm doing by betting appropriately. There's some skill involved as well as luck. If I'm dealt a 2 and 4 off-suit I'm likely gonna fold. But three 2s and two 4s might show up and I could have won. This is like explaining evolution to a creationist...

  Sad news - Our friend Larc

  some of you may remember larc and zazuwitts, who used to post here regularly.. .

  i heard from zazu today that sadly larc passed away this morning.

  he died peacefully in his sleep of heart failure.

  OK but that's got nothing to do with life, it just so happens that the sun rises and sets and we came up with a calendar with names. I'm talking about decisions and life's activities. For instance, when you lay your head on the pillow tonight and go to sleep, can you guarantee me 100% that you'll wake up to see Tuesday? No... you could die in your sleep, robbers could break in and kill you, etc. You take a risk everytime you go to sleep that you'll see the next day. Sure the next day will arrive but that's just a construct (WWIII could happen, the whole world could be blown up tonight, an asteroid or meteor or comet could come out of nowhere and wreck the earth or the moon and [removed]"Tuesday"). The likelihood of any of that coming to pass is very small but it's still there.

  played partypoker.com still my eyes glazed over, talked with caty, slept a lot, cats knocked over and broke several items and I don't have it in me to clean them... now I'm waiting for my mom to pick me up and go downtown to ask for temporary assistance i.e. money.

  Wow Simon, you have a complete misunderstanding of one of the basic themes of life.

  Everything is a gamble - everything is a risk. But playing poker isn't mere chance, you play with skill. You don't just roll the dice and hope they end up where they need to be. Most of the hands I fold if I don't have to post a blind so I never lose any money. Poker isn't for everyone, but it's NOT a simple game of chance. Describing it so is akin to a creationist saying evolution is nothing but blind chance.

  It really doesn't matter. Earthquakes and so forth are things Jesus said would not be signs. The only sign to watch for is "the sign of the Son of Man" in Matthew 24:30. Remember that when the disciples asked for a sign Jesus' first words were "Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say 'I am he!' and, 'The time is near!' Do not go after them. When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately." - Luke 21:7-9 RSV

  So I think a careful examination of the synoptic apocalypse shows that the "composte sign" JWs ramble on about, including earthquakes, has nothing to do with the end times. Even Chuck Russell recognized this point as he applied Matthew 24:1-14 to the entire gospel age and not any "sign" that Jesus was present or the great tribulation was about to begin.

  Well, I would say that just about everything in life is a gamble. Just recently, Simon, you took a gamble on one job being more suited for you than the other. I was of course joshing about losing my money (like I have much anyway). There are free tables to play on, and they can be fun, if only to hone your skills. For a home-bound recluse like myself, I get some entertainment that way. But yeah, gambling away you month's grocery money is a pretty bad idea.
