minimus: "But I think that it's counter-productive to constantly go after each other."
Counter-productive to what? What do you suggest?
with so much going on over here, do you think that newbies, lurkers, or potenial apostates could or do get scared off from this place?
if someone is on the fence and they want to explore the internet and are warned that all you'll see are disgruntled apostates, could these forums make them think the "faithful and discreet slave" is actually right?

So what if it does? What would you suggest, minimus?

Gather your thoughts, steel your convictions, be aware of their subterfuge and manipulation. Answer no question when uncertain, and give enigmatic answers if you must. Better yet, answer their questions with a question.
And like Sentinel says: when it's all over, you'll still be welcomed here!

i am researching the jw religion...and i was talking to a man who was going to join.
he told me something about satan and his angels not being cast out until 1914...because that's when the first war in heaven happened.
i don't know how accurate he was, but please, if someone could help clear me on this?.
Debating about 1914 is like debating about the existence of unicorns.
What the WTS said about 1914 before 1914 didn't happen, and what they've said about 1914 since 1914 can't be proved (it's all invisible, don't ya know).

i'm considering doing a speech on high control groups for my communications class.
i have five minutes, so was wondering what angle might be the most appropriate to reach my audience (a mixture of young people just out of high school and people in their mid thirties and forties who are training for career changes).i can't use any specific groups as an example.

Well, 5 minutes is not a lot of time, for sure, but perhaps you might focus on one of the following characteristics of high control groups:
Commitment: willingness to sacrifice status, possessions, safety, even life itself, for the cause; a total response to the total demand; group solidarity; social identification of individual goals with group goals;
Controls: willingness to obey the commands of leadership without question; willingness to suffer sanctions for infraction rather than leave the group;
Communication: eagerness to share one's experience with others; refusal to be silenced; internal communication stylized and highly symbolic; a cryptic language;
Goals: absolutism; closed system of meaning and value which explains everything; uncritical and unreflective attachment to a single set of values;
Conformity: intolerance of deviance or dissent; exclusion of outcasts; group confessions or criticism; separatism;

why can't we all just drop it.

the thought of getting married at the kh was very depressing.
i always thought what a bore it would be, i mean afterall its a very special day in your life why do it at such a boring place?
i always thought about going to an exotic location for mine.. what about you?
1st wedding: KH, my dad did the honors;
2nd wedding: Folks' house, my dad did the honors;
3rd wedding: Gonna be at Las Vegas, and Elvis is doing the honors!
YIPPEE!!!!!!

I make too many mistakes! A real friend would tell me how they thought I was wrong. And even if I still thought I was right, I would value their friendship in sharing their differing opinion.

i was reading some recent postings that talked about the orientation meeting at bethel, and how the negative things were not to be reported back at the congregations.. now that we are free from it all, how about sharing some of these tales?
DocBob, that was 1970. Turned out that those 2 Gileadites (it was 2 as I recall, at least 1) would invite new boys to their room for some "welcome to Bethel" drinks, and after getting the boys sufficiently "relaxed" would sexually exploit them. The perps even "shamed" some of the newbies into recruiting others to join in the "festivities."
Farkel: Well, what can I say? Knorr gave so much wonderful counsel, I simply can't remember ALL of it! LOL
Needless to say, I came back from Bethel a total basket case. Left after 1 1/4 years, well before my 4 were up. Prohibited by WTS from pioneering for at least 6 months (for breaking my vow) and ended up in front of the draft board (since my classification as a "minister" was now void).
One of the very few times I ever saw my dad get mad. After I was back, an old timer told my folks that he was not surprised that I came back trashed. After he told my folks a few things, my dad got all over him and said "Why the hell didn't you tell us these things BEFORE we sent our son back there?" Well, you know the answer..."It wouldn't have been the loyal thing to do."
Sheesh
