Do people praying out loud in public disturb you?
by Mad Sweeney ini am sitting here in a study lounge.
when i got here around 15 minutes ago the only ones here were two young ladies and a young man, sitting around a table with their eyes closed.
the young man was talking.

One word comes to mind, "phony."
Like Holden Caulfield, anything that smells phony sends me off. Holden especially hated it when a guy played the piano in a phony way, or people listened to him playing in a phony way.
"If I could play the piano, I'd play it in the goddam closet," he said.
And that's exactly where these idiots should be doing their goddam praying. I think it says as much in the bible.

Mr. Falcon Asks......What's so bad about boxing?
by Mr. Falcon ini love boxing.
it kicks arse all over the place.
although it has lost some of it's prior glory and has waaaay too many classes that are televised and billed as "main events", it's still better than mma (sorry to any mma fans; i actually don't mind ufc, i'm just saying that i prefer traditional boxing).. anywho, what is the deal with jws hating on boxing?

Re: the video of Ali's final punch that knocked out Foreman: Man, that never fails to give me goosebumps.
Whenever I'm facing hard times or long odds in life, I just think to myself, "Ali in Zaire, Ali in Zaire."
I only boxed once in my life. I guess I was about 13 or 14 years old, and one of the neighborhood boys got boxing gloves for Christmas. A bunch of us met down at his house one day after school and set up a match out in the yard. The kid I boxed was about my age and size. We were doing standard 3 minute rounds with 1 minute rest in between. The first thing you notice is how tired your arms are after 2 minutes of holding up the gloves. The kid knocked me on my ass in the third round. It was embarassing and exhilarating!
Ever since, I've had nothing but respect for guys (and gals) who get in the ring and put it on the line.

On Human Evolution
by TD init's a subject that comes up fairly often here (understandably) and very strong opinions are expressed.
much of the discussion seems to be counterproductive.. i'd like to propose a different approach.
we all know what each other's conclusions are (or at least we should by now).

Not being funny, but can we define human please?
Langauge (if so how complex)? Use of fire? Care for the dead? Tool making (if so how complex)? Subscribing to Readers Digest? How about killing each other in the name of religion?

How to remain sane while being a hypocrite?
by Kensho inas time goes on i find it a real challenge to keep my sanity while still in "the truth" especially after considering all the rsearch i have been doing about the org.
that i have been very active in for almost 4 decades.
i have managed to be removed as an elder while staying in good standing (prayers-reading,mic carring etc.

You have no "friends" in the Truth. If you ever leave, you'll find that out.
You've only got one life to live -- don't waste it trying to please your fake friends.

Birthdays
by baltar447 inso wife and i are kinda in limbo lately, wanting to fade, but hard to commit to fading 100%.
we have howver decided to do a little birthday thing for my son soon(cake but no candles, but did get him a present and card), and we haven't really talked to the kids about how we feel lthat birthdays are no different from anniversaries despite what the society prints.
any ideas on what to say to the kids or how to deal with it ourselves?.

As long as there are no candles I think you're in the clear.

Why does God permit suffering? Don't let others answer this question for you
by sabastious inwasn't the answer to this question wrapped up in a neat little package when you were young?
it was easily explainable and it made you feel so warm inside that you knew that god felt passionately bad about the suffering and that it was going to stop.. there is so much pain in this world.
people are starving, people are being torchered by others who have lost their minds, there is endless suffering on this planet.

to me a world without suffering would be a world without love
Yeah, I feel the love when I see a child with birth defects; when I see a vibrant contributing member of society get cancer; etc., etc.
Randy Newman hit the nail on the head: "Nobody gives a shit except Jackson Browne, Jackson Browne, Jackson Browne."

As a self-loather, I don't even like myself.
