At the end of chapter 6 of Barbara Grizzuti Harrison's Visions of Glory: A History and a Memory of Jehovah's Witnesses , there is this:
"I worked, the summer of 1953, at the Watchtower cannery in Woodrow, and I never knew Rutherford's grave was there. For all his public exposure, the private man remained mysterious, remote, inaccessible. His grave is unvisited."
with all the recent changes in the society, it seems that they are agressively responding to information leaks.

It's interesting, I visited my mother this past weekend, and she started filling me in on all the "news," the change in the WT, the public talk being 30 minutes, the borg pulling stuff out of Brooklyn, etc, stuff I already knew but didn't let on. Then I asked her if she knew about the recent sex abuse settlement payout. Well, THAT was news to her. She seemed somewhat shocked, but not really bothered by that. I've never mentioned the UN scandal to her.
She mentioned that next year's dates for the DC were not announced at this year's DC, so many are speculating that the borg might think the end is really, really near -- so near there's no need to plan the 2008 DCs. I laughed and said, "Well, it's about time!"

a theme regularly running through ex-jw / apostate posts is their conviction that the worship of jws is at best of a high control basis or at worst exhibits cult-like tendencies , so they often delight in the freedom that they now enjoy.. but in reality , how much control is exhibited on the average witness?
to take one example , at least 40k are dfd in an average year , and one would assume 3 - 5x this figure are reproved privately or publicly.
that means that over a 10 year period 20% - 25% of jws are seriously flouting the strongest moral code of jws , usually for immorality , emphasized in wt after wt , meeting after meeting.
A JW friend of mine recently boasted that he's been a studier of the Bible for more than 30 years. I called him on it, pointing out that reading WT literature can in no way be confused with legitimate Bible study. He couldn't (or wouldn't) say which gospel is considered by scholars to be the first one written. He couldn't (or wouldn't) say which Pauline letter is considered by scholars to be the very first Christian document. He finally admitted that he was, at best, a casual Bible reader. The sad thing is, this admission didn't seem to bother him. He's based his entire life on rigorous Bible study casual Bible reading and WT literature (exclusively), and it doesn't seem to bother him.

The rank and file eventually lose the DESIRE to think. It doesn't even occur to them as an option.

i work in the information department of a small private college.
the professor of religious studies has asked me to come to his survey of the new testament class and talk about jehovah's witnesses -- what they believe, what it was like growing up in the movement, ect., whatever.. so what do you think i should share?

my lovely girlfriend and i sat down over a homecooked meal, and discussed the pros and cons of attending the memorial.. i decided, with her support, that we would attend.. i spent years of my life pretending to be a witness to please my mother.
when i left the witnesses, my mother said some hurtful things.. and those things really hurt me... for a while.
but i established myself as my own person, developed my own relationships, and have gotten a good start on my own life.. i don't know that i want to hurt my mother back, but i do want to make it abundantly clear to her, my grandmother, and all the members of my former congregation, that richierich is alive and kicking.. and i think that walking into the kingdom hall, dressed respectfully in a suit, yet with full piercing jewelry intact, and with erika wearing something classy that steals the brother's eyes, and draws glares from the humble sisters, will be just the thing to send that message to my mother.. i don't plan on partaking or making a disturbance.

Why does Jehovah need a witness?
1) build a hall in the center of the city, not far away like they usually do.. 2) make it 1 hour meetings.
3) dress clean, that's all.
4) beards or no beards, that's not important, it's what's in your heart that counts.. .
