when i first left the jw's some years ago, one of the most incredible observations i made was just how irrelevant the wt and jw's were to the larger public.
when the conversation turned to my history (as it often did, because i desperately wanted to discuss it) the most comon reaction was of complete unawareness of the jw's, much less their doctrine, or complete surprise that i regarded them as destructive.
to the later, the jw's were understood to be just another church like any other, a little weird perhaps but just one of the many churches in town.
A few years ago, I gave a guest lecture in a religion course at a private four year college. I gave a brief history of the JWs from Russell through Franz, the various failed prophesies, etc., and my experiences growing up in that environment in the 60s and 70s. Most of the students in that course were 18 and 19 years old. They looked at me like, "What the fxxk?"
The average person could (or is it couldn't?) give a rat's ass about JWs.

To be honest, I have to wonder if they'll drop the Memorial soon.
Maybe they'll require all of the so-called annoited to meet at the same time and same place (say, Yankee Stadium or Madison Square Gardens). Wouldn't that be fine, fine witness?

Back in the '70s, I was hoping for:
1) pre-marital sex
2) long hair and beards
3) no field service requirement
4) only one meeting a week
Teenagers in current captivity are probably still hoping for the same things.
I finally got them all by leaving. But now I have to accept the fact that I'll be destroyed at the big A.
i left the org many years ago as a teenager.
i started looking more closely at their doctrines a few months ago to work out if they really have the truth.
when i cam across the notion that jesus is not mediator for everyone i was startled and have been looking at the issue a lot more closely.
People suck and because of that suckage, they fuck up everything they do because, at their core, people suck.
God knows this and loves us anyways.
NO, (most) people are fucked up because other people convince them that they suck based on some fucked up ancient scriblings of wayward bronze-age goat herders. "No worries, Jesus came to unfuck you. Here, read all about it."
