my son-in-law just drove me home from montreal and we had a fascinating discussion about jw funerals.
my daughters grandmother (her father's mother) passed away a couple of months ago.
my son-in-law went to his first ever jw "meeting".
Sounds like they are just getting worse. Tackier all the time. What lousy timing to ask your family if they plan on coming back to the Hall! Still, it's a horribly fascinating experience and educational for those who had no idea how the Dubs operate their company.
When my grandmother dies, I don't think I'll ask my husband to go through this macabre gathering. Lol, don't know if I'll go myself!
well... the 'fortune cookie' thread got me to thinking about all of the silly things that my mom (and the jws) did when i was growing up.. it has been a while, and so i know that i won't be able to remember all of them.. my mom refused to buy a soft drink named 'sprite' - as its' logo included a small impish-looking fella (a sprite) that wore a bottlecap for a hat.
she claimed it was deemunz.. my mom hesitated to buy fried chicken at a place named 'church's fried chicken', as she wasn't sure if the name meant 'religion', or was a person's last name.. my mom refused to shop at salvation army - cause it would be supporting another religion.. the folks at the local kingdom hall came down hard on my mom cause one of my sisters wore a cute little 'sailor's dress'... it had boat anchors, and other 'sailor' emblems on the buttons, that were considered 'militaristic' by the powers-that-be at the local kh.
(i'm not sure if my mom put on different buttons, or scrapped the dress entirely.
I couldn't watch Casper the friendly ghost, because ghosts are demunz, pretending to be friendly.
No water pistols, cuz you'll grow up and want a real gun.
No troll dolls, they are miniature demunz and their evil little eyes will light up and take control of you.
Couldn't have go-go boots in the sixties; they are imitating street walkers and topless dancers at go-go.clubs.
No listening to disco or dance music, it encouraged homosexuality. Oops, I listened!
No crosses or pictures of Jesus in the home, they open the door to demunz.
Churches are a good place to pick up demunz.
i went and saw the queen today, she was visiting a little town near me, so i thought, why shouldn`t i go and see her?
after stopping myself from doing that sort of thing,(like going to see princess diana`s flower`s when she died), because we were advised not to when we were jw`s.
it was a really happy day, people were waving flags, and the atmosphere was lovely.
I have always admired the Queen of England, for her grace, dignity, poise, and she is sweet, lively and seems genuinely caring of the people. Plus, I just like her! When she comes on a TV news clip, I always stop what I'm doing and enjoy seeing her.
I wish I could say the same for those blasted Bushes!
i was in a few congregations growing up and like many things in the organization, rules were often regional.
one of those issues i remember and it was something i always got a kick out of, was people's reaction to fortune cookies at chinese food restaurants.
i had not run in to it as a child, and then i moved away as a young adult and was studying with witnesses to get baptized and they would try to make me feel more welcome, by inviting me to meals with other witnesses in the congregation.
We could eat the cookie, being veeeery careful not to peek at the message, which would bring us demonic harassment.
i'm afraid i haven't finished ranting yet.
sorry peoples.. we have been shunned for five years now by my husband's jw family, who are his parents, his brother, my sister in law and their two little children.. this evening, my mother in law rang, asking my husband to ring his brother as his wife was unwell and unable to work for the next couple of weeks.
could we lend them some money for a while!!!!!
Tell them if they would just display faith, Jehoopla will provide, hahaha!
another post from a newbie(who has been lurking around here for a couple of years now).. my story is nothing exciting really.
i grew up pretty much from the age of 3 or 4 in the jw religion.
my parents both became witnesses at that time, then after a couple of years, my mother "saw the light", and stopped going, but my father dragged my sister and i along with him for many years to come.

Amazing how they obsess with all the bad events that ever took place, digging all the way back to Hitler, yet not one miracle of science or medicine or anything joyous is mentioned. The world is completely bad, evil, doom and gloom! Run to the Tower ASAP! `
of all the dirt you've learned about jws, and mistreatment and epiphanies experienced, what was the biggest or most painful disappointment?
what did you do to cope with it?
and how long did it take to come to an acceptance of the situation?
The loss of my grandmother. She died from refusing blood when I was five. The unkind treatment of my widowed grandfather left alone on holidays and his birthday because we didn't celebrate "pagan" occasions.
How do I cope? Somewhere up there, I hope they know how sorry I am, as an adult. now I know how wrong it all was. I hope they're in a better place and that they understand I was only a misled child.

So, all these six thousand (?) years of human suffering, wars, famine, disease, etc. have all been allowed to go on so Jehoopla could say, "See? I told you so! I know best! I was right, and Adam and Eve and Satan were wrong, so there!"
