  my wife who is still a jw refuses.

  to be honest the engagement would be taking centre stage and my family have respect for my wife so my sisters birthday wouldnt be mentioned.

  Wow, that's a shame. It sounds like your family's already being very accomodating of your wife...that's asking a lot, not to mention a birthday because it might offend her. Couldn't she meet them halfway, and attend, then? Why not tell her, you'll respect her feelings if she wishes to stay home, if she respects your desire to attend your sister's special event!

  In other words, let her sit home by herself, but don't let her spoil it for you! After all, when will your sister get engaged on her birthday again, can't miss that!

  Sorry, should have clarified. I am indeed going but I have kids who are barred from going. Turning up and having to explaining all this crap does my head in.

  Is there one thing that keeps you from going back?

  i had email contact this week for the first time with an old boyfriend--haven't seen him in 28 years!

  i'm trying to compose an answer...there are a hundred reasons why i will never go back, but how to sum it up?

  i'm thinking along the lines of "i just don't believe that the society/gb is god's representative on earth" and see if he presses further.. suggestions, anyone?.

  Every believing JW needs to be asked just one question, and the question should be posed to them very slowly and methodically to drive it home -

  "Do you really believe that any day now God is going to violently kill every man, woman and child on the earth except for JW's?

  This is the crux of the whole matter, IMO.

  The above sums up my main feelings about things. Well put indeed. Other than that; the attitude of 'nothing is ever good enough' done my head in. This physically & mentally drained me. I have more happines now than I ever did trying to 'keep up'. J

  i noticed an elder showed a picture of "paradise" and asked "who are the people dipicted"... .

  serveral children answered and said the same thing "they (look like they) are witnesses" -- .

  it was as if these children were taught that only jws are right... which they probably were.

  Here's a lovely pic from the "Great Teacher" book,

  When we got this book a couple of years ago for the 1st time I immediately looked to the back to see if there were any pictures of destruction. I was absolutely astounded when I saw this. I felt like ripping it out of my kids book.

  The funny thing is, I remember a conversation about the manner in which worldly people will die at the big A and the dubs thoughts were that it would not be a painful death. "Their breath will simply be taken from them"

  Did it make you think - 'this really might be the truth after all'

  Did it make you think - 'I`ve got to get out of here now, this is a load of crap'

  Personally, I read aloud the KM article on d/f in 2002 KM. I still wonder how I did it. As I was sitting there on the platform looking at my beutiful daughter I thought; I could NEVER treat her this way if she was d/f`d!

  It was a defining moment which confirmed to me something was very, veryy wrong. Yet, it took me another 4 years to make the break. I`m ashamed I even read aloud such hateful, bigoted, pious shit!

  i'm sure this kind of thing has been discussed before, but who here thinks the elders remind them of the pharisees with their guidelines strict rules?

  like the length of a slit in your skirt, or no sideburns on men or no beards, or men can't dye their hair, or no colored dress shirts or suits on the "brothers".

  they would say these were guidelines but then take your "privileges" away if you didn't comply.

  I`m perplexed; What legislates for the gross lack of love?

  i`ve been out of the org for a while now and im perplexed about why there is such a lack of genuine live in the cong`s.

  when you think about it, they are taught to exemplify jc, they are taught to exemplify the 'god of love'.

  the brothers are constantly encouraged at ms & elder meetings to deal with the brothers 'lovingly'.

  Of course, in the next breath, they go on to give a definition of "love" that is twisted beyond recognition.

  "We show love to our neighbors by avoiding all social interaction with them, and limiting our contact preaching efforts...Disfellowshipping is a loving provision, so shunning your own family is showing love....God is so loving, he wants to end poverty, sickness, injustice, etc. etc. He will do this by slaughtering 99.9% of the world's population...how fine it is show love for God by watching your child hemorrhage to death instead of allowing a blood transfusion"

  With constant messages about this kind of love, is it any wonder that JWs claim to be "loving", yet act the way they do?
