  My ear says Satriani is ALL gimmicky. That's his stock in trade. Not that it's bad...

  When I said Joe is never gimmicky, what I meant is that his playing is always with purpose, not "watch this amazing useless technical trick I can do with my guitar - gee aren't you amazed that I can do that?" It was flashy/no-soul pretenders (like Steve Vai) who did that and that is what sunk the guitar-wizard scene that I spoke of. A bunch of guys who heard Joe said to themselves "I'm gonna learn to play like that" and were able to match (and even exceed) his speed and skill, but they never matched his awesome musical vision.

  I have heard of Robert Johnson, but I've never heard any of his music. I'll check into him some more.

  I think Satriani is a true artist. He can play as fast as anyone, but to me he is never gimmicky. His music has tons of soul and emotion. Check out the songs Cool #9 and Rubina, if you ever get a chance. He was the one who really launched the (now dead) guitar-wizard genre that was popular in the mid to late 80's. So many imitators, he was/is the real thing (though his newest release isn't all that great ).

  How does the WTS define "former member"

  the wts claims on their web site that they do not shun "former members".

  it would be interesting to know exactly how they define "former members".

  does anybody else sense that the wts is playing with the lexicon, meaning, of words.

  uninitiated person viewing the WT website would think, based upon the statements made, that any JW at any time can just say, "hey everybody, you know, I've been doing some thinking and research, and I've decided that JW isn't for me. I'm going to stop attending meetings now. I'll also be reverting to the lifestyle I led prior to becoming a JW, which means celebrating holidays and voting. But we can still be friends, right?" to which the response would be, "Oh, yes, we understand this isn't for everybody. Take care, we'll see ya around."

  Which of course is not the case, you lying sack-o-poop Watchtower.

  i have a friend who is studying with the jw's right now.

  he's a very open minded guy and has been interested in hearing what i have to say on the matter.

  he has seen the dateline show (i taped it for him) - and i've shown him some info about the history.

  I don't think the Jesus-is-God or Jesus-isn't-God is a productive angle to follow. This is one of the main teachings that JW's use to draw Bible-believers from other denominations into their own, it is one of their most significant "brand differentiations" that lures dissatisfied churchgoers into their clutches.

  If your friend is interested in JW's and eventually becomes involved, well, I can do no better than to quote Mr. Hoffer:

  Propaganda does not deceive people; it merely helps them to deceive themselves.

  have you thought of going back to meetings?

  that is, to find disfellowshipped people who need support or advice?

  if you've been to meetings since being disfellowshipped, i take it you'll know that they all sit at the back and leave straight away so they are easy to spot.

  i continued to attend for several months after being disfellowshipped and met up with several disfellowshipped persons, although i had to attend several times as they didn't appear to make all the meetings (they must be spiritually weak or something lol).

  Interestingly, I sent an email out to a number of persons when I DA'd with a link to a website critical of JW's. Nobody responded to it except for one guy who was disf'd (I didn't know it when I sent the email). It was sad, he definitely fit the description of the disfellowshipped WT defender described in the above linked article to a T.

  While you won't find any written rules against such a thing, a JW's Watchtower mental shackles Bible-trained conscience would prevent them from attending.
