is ac/dc popular in their homeland?
they are very much a staple of rock radio in the u.s. i hear the song "back in black" at least once every 3 or 4 days.. "i come from a land down under" by men at work still gets air time on the light rock and 80's music stations.. i'd also like to ask british posters if led zep is popular over there.
they get played even more than ac/dc over here.. .

I had some JW friends who visited Australia once. They told me about a lot of the cultural differences that they found amusing, such as "smash repair" for a body shop, "sloppy joe" for a sweater, "Bob's Your Uncle" means everything is OK, there were others but I've forgotten them.
By the way Beck, you're my JW.com crush. Your posts make me laugh so much! If you ever decide to leave Oz and come to Ohio, I'm here for ya babe!
i would have to say my favorite moment is when bart goes to the comic book store and has this conversation with comic book guy:.
(bart lays $8 on the table).
bart: "can i have this comic book here?".
Not a regular Simpsons watcher, but when I do I'm always laughing my head off at it.
Homer in space chasing the floating potato chips comes to my mind as a favorite moment, but dang that show is so funny it's hard to narrow it down.

My brother is in a supervised living program. He has his own apartment, and is alone a fair amount of the time. He has staff workers from the local MRDD that come and help him pay his bills, grocery shop, etc. He is able to hold a job, doing housekeeping at a hotel. I don't think he likes it very much, but if my brother had his way he'd do nothing but sit around eating greasy food while watching Nick at Nite and TV Land, or listen to the soundtrack from Grease for the umpteen billionth time in his life, or talk to the local cats that roam his apartment complex.
i am researching the jw religion...and i was talking to a man who was going to join.
he told me something about satan and his angels not being cast out until 1914...because that's when the first war in heaven happened.
i don't know how accurate he was, but please, if someone could help clear me on this?.
Here's a link to an article that goes pretty in-depth. It's heavier than the stuff I would usually read, but if you're the scholarly type you may find it interesting. The whole JW religion hangs on the 1914 date. It is the cornerstone of their theological superstructure.

I envy your working with autistic adults. They are indeed unique individuals to be around. They couldn't tell a lie if their life depended on it - deceiving someone else is beyond their comprehension. I have an autistic older brother. They didn't know much about it when he was a kid, and hence he didn't receive the education and treatments that are helping autistic children now. Not that I want autistics to be cured. The world needs them! But my brother has had a painful life, and I think he would be better adjusted to his condition if we knew then what we know now. I carry a lot of guilt for the way I teased him when we were young. I used to drive him bananas, just doing stupid stuff to irritate him (and was he irritable!)
i was flipping thru the latest issue (dec. 2002) of the popular magazine psychology today, and noticed some book reviews.
the article on pg.
76 is entitled "cq: psychology today introduces culture quotient (cq), a review of the season's most psychologically astute...books, ..." and one the 11 books they chose to bestow this description upon was diane wilson's new book, awakening of a jehovah's witness: escape from the watchtower society".
That does it - I'm heading over to Amazon right NOW to purchase Awakening...

I didn't know Split Enz were Aussies. I still remember the video for "One Step Ahead" - good song, back from the old, old days of MTV, when it was worth watching.
The "Vegemite sandwich" line from "Land Down Under" went straight over Americans' heads. I didn't know what Vegemite was until recently. They were interviewing a Columbus Crew (soccer) player on the local news. He had come over from Oz to play here. They asked him straight out - "what in the world is Vegemite?" He explained that it is a popular sandwich spread in Oz. What is it like? Is it like peanut butter or something?
a couple of weeks ago my wife and i took a vacation to celebrate our anniversary.
we spent one day on the beach with some wine and had a long and wonderful conversation about the courses our lives had taken.
she reminded me of something that had happened as we were escaping, and after reading the post from ray franz, i thought i'd relate to the board.. in the spring of 1988 i had reached the end of my rope with the wt.

I had heard of Ray Franz while I was in, but I didn't know of his books until I was on my way out. The very mention of his name used to bring up such feelings of hatred towards this "apostate". Glad I know the truth of the matter now.
as a christian, it is necessary to spend time considering and meditating on what god has to tell us in his written word.
but, as one who has spent many years practicing within the structured life of the watchtower society, it is also necessary to reconcile the truth found in god's word against the ideas and inventions propagated upon our minds within that structured life, for the sake of clarity.
since i, reluctantly, continue in association with the watchtower society, the need to do this on a regular basis becomes all the more pressing.
