  Supernatural experiences

  many ex-jw's experience a new found freedom to investigate and question all the things they once felt were true, and may ultimately come to the conclusion that the bible is just a book of stories and take science as their new "religion".

  it happened to me...) but a question i have is this: are all supernatural experiences hallucinations?

  science would say probably yes.

  I lived next door to a medium. There was a very thin wall that separated us. A group met there and they "contacted the dead" on a frequent basis. It was very loud and I overhead the whole thing on many occasions. The noise was coming from the mouths of the people present, not from any other source.

  She told me there were many spirits present in her home and there would be some in mine as well. She said not to be afraid but if they gave me any trouble, to let her know.

  I never had any supernatural experiences or heard any noises which I couldn't explain. I'm a skeptic and am convinced there's nothing in it.

  Do you group think or think for yourself?

  as a witness, i was very prone to follow the group of thinking that was in the kingdom hall and not speak out for myself.

  i am sure a lot of us would agree, this is the general pattern of most good little witnesses.

  yet, in my post-witness life experience, i have learned this is about as common a thing in life, as there could be.

  Awake only published once a month but still pitifully poor!

  looking through the latest copy of the awake that i got from my wife who has just got back from the meeting.

  what strikes me is that although the awake is now only published monthly it is still the same old tired format.

  'watching the world' still has the same pathetic cartoons, and the style and tone of the articles are just the same.

  my daughter who is 13, always felt the writing was too boring and infantile even for her age group

  I can't imagine there would be too many young people who would be into the magazines now.

  The younger generation is so much more switched on than we ever were - what with TV, playstations, computers. My teenage nephew says it takes him 5 minutes to study the WT. They are quite vocal about expressing their boredom with the mags too! We didn't dare.

  Paralells between "Maus" and the Watchtower

  is anybody here familliar with the book "maus"?

  it was about a holocaust survivor who couldn't cope in the real world.

  he had constant flashbacks and his relationships were always strained.

  ColdRedRain I haven't read the book but I relate to your comments. It's almost impossible for outsiders to understand issues of growing up as a jw and leaving.

  It's hard to form relationships, especially as a fader, because eventually you have to take a stand. If you can't live without your jw family, you're basically stuck.

  Thankfully we have the internet and this forum!!

  Things JW's write: "It is reasonable to conclude"

  question for y'all--do you think that the person on the writing committee who writes something like: "it is reasonable to conclude, then, <wild speculation>" suffers any kind of ill effects?

  do they momentarily shudder?

  do they even realize what they're doing?

  I think they feel powerful, blessed by holy spirit, superior, they'll be strutting around at the next meeting looking for a victim.

  Did anyone you know fade before YOU did?

  just curious as to whether anyone had the experience of a friend or associate at the kingdom hall fade away or discontinue attendance without having been disfellowshipped first?

  i did have that happen, and i wondered why they suddenly weren't around anymore.

  what were you told by others regarding this absence?

  All us faders retreated to our own little private hell and never spoke about it.

  That so sums it up evita. We have all these parallel "little private hells" happening. Too much fear!

  Upsetting when you find out someone else in your own family has been parallel fading but you couldn't talk about it!

  A little easier now with the internet, but it takes a lot of courage for a jw to start looking at "apostate" websites (amazing as that sounds now).

  Overheard at Special Assembly Day

  at our "special assembly day," they interviewed an elderly "sister" in her 70's.

  she is the wife of a longtime circuit overseer who is of a similar age, but in very poor health.

  a couple years ago he retired into our circuit and is being entirely supported by contributions from people in our circuit, living in one of those connected-to-the-kh apartment arrangements.

  She'll be mourned, but her funeral will be the same as any other in the KH.

  I found "NO" works well. Like, sister, can we visit you on Monday for a shepherding call? No, that's not convenient! When would be convenient then? I'll let you know. End of conversation. Repeat as often as necessary.

  If they call unannounced, say, I'm sorry it's not convenient right now.

  Usually they'll feel fine because they made the effort. Sooner or later they'll leave you alone.

  how do i stop her?

  she's is only 16 and is bent on getting baptised.

  i know for a fact she is doing it for show, to show that she is a mature sister.

  Maybe there's a young brother she's interested in. I was told recently by some young ones that that's the main reason teenagers get baptised these days - so they can date.
