Is practicing Capoeira wrong/bad/discouraged by Jehovah's Witnesses?
by aikichristian inmy girlfriend used to be an avid capoeira practicioner for over year.
she has reaped many benefits from it: increased physical fitness, flexibility, some self-defense skills, and stress-relief.
she enjoyed it.. unfortunately, an article came out in the spanish version of the "watchtower" ("atalaya" in spanish) essentially saying that capoeira should not be practiced because it has some spirituality stuff in it that was wrong.

aikichristian, I'd like to add this list to yours.
http://www.capoeiranj.com/capoeira.htm
THE BENEFITS OF PRACTICING CAPOEIRA
* Flexibility
* Mobility
* Rhythm
* Power
* Endurance
* Development of another language
* Gain a singing voice
* Cardio-vascular fitness
* Spatial awareness
* Provides a personal creative outlet
* Gain self-confidence
* Foster cultural identity
These are all in harmony with bible principles. The Watchtower does have the habit of "demonizing" African culture in general. What do you expect when sequestered ancient white men who hate dancing, music and sports call all the shots?
It's acknowledged on the site above that Capoeira *used to* be used for fighting, but this is not what they teach or perform *today*. They have some cool videos on the home page; looks like a super workout and no one's getting hurt or, LOL, "preparing for war."

Stratton vs.WTBTS revisited
by Junction-Guy inok, back in 2002 (i believe) the wt society took the village of stratton ohio to court, and won.
it seems that stratton had placed some kinds of restrictions on door to door soliciting, such as registering with the police before going door to door.. .
question is, was there any loopholes left by this supreme court decision?.

blondie, they're listed here on Nov. 29, 2001.

Junction-Guy,
I moved moved to a new area around 2002 and my town did send out a notice about door-to-door solicitors which may have been prompted by this decision. The town was putting together a Do Not Call list of its own, ostensibly to prevent crime. Not sure if they ever passed the ordinance.
They specifically stated that JWs were protected constitutionally under religious freedom of speech. They could prevent gypsy contractors and other types from calling, but not the JWs.

Taking One for the Team
by Perry inthe wts has figured out that if you bring jesus out once a year, and create a "showy display", then the rank and file will be sufficiently convinced that the jw's hold jesus as a central figure in their beliefs.
to anyone else, it can immediately be seen for what it is.
a publicity stunt.

***Why is it that believers always call foul when someone challenges them?***
They cry foul for the same reasons non-believers do, they're defending their position.
Let me spell it out, once more... The challenge in the original post was from Perry to Memorial attenders, not believers vs. non-believers on the existence of God/Jesus. One would expect a forum full of non-believers to weigh in with their opinion on the subject. But they immediately cried foul. Have any addressed the subject at hand? No.
***If a non-believer started a thread directed at another flavor of non-believer (is there such a thing?), you would never hear them whining about some believer hijacking their thread, in fact they would love the debate.***
We agree. That is not the case in this instance. Go back and read Perry's post, in which he elaborated on another's comment about the Memorial. Then, he specifically addresses lurkers on the subject of the Memorial. He never proposed a debate on the existence of Christ, though apparently he was baited into that rather easily and has been kept dancing for your entertainment.
You also ask if there's such a thing as different flavors of non-believers? Of course there are, these forums are living proof! I for one enjoy the fact that not everyone here has to be shoe-horned into one camp or another. Most of us left that black-or-white, all-or-nothing mentality at the Kingdom Hall, where it belongs.
***No believer ever answers that question.***
Nice black-and-white thinking! Still, I tend to agree with you. What has that got to do with "Taking One for the Team?" Hence my suggestion on starting another thread.
Anyway, can we safely assume no one on this thread, including Perry, will see each other at the Memorial this year? :–)

Inquistor, please get a grip.
Did I state that I'm a Christian? Where did you get that from?
I do use the bible quite frequently to point out flaws in WT doctrine on this board. I try to do so in a way that does not offend lurkers. Please show me my attempts at proselytism, my Christian-making efforts. In fact, they're non-existent.
Trying to get a topic back on track is not talking down to anyone, but it certainly seems to hit a raw nerve with you as you were the first to do so.
I'm LMAO at this this "holy intimacy I have with Christ" that you speak of. Where the heck did you pull that out of? If Christ exists, he's never paid much attention to me.
Again, shoot the messenger. You prove my point.

Expel Demons By Using The Name Jehovah
by Beer Connoisseur inthe watchtower encourages its members to use the name "jehovah" when they encounter demonic influence.
when i look in the watchtower bible, early christians used another name.. mark 16:17. luke 10:17. acts 16:16-18 & 19:11-16. why would the watchtower use a different name?
have they gone beyond what is written?

Hi and welcome, Beer Connoisseur. Like the name!
You asked, Have they gone beyond what is written? (1 Cor 4:6). The answer is yes.
I posted this recently on another somewhat related thread, "Ghosts and using God's name":
Proverbs 18:10
The name of the LORD is a strong tower;
the righteous run to it and are safe.
The name is used figuratively. Compare with 2 Samuel 22:3,51; Psalms 18:2; 61:3; 144:2 and you'll see it's not advice to invoke "Jehovah" as ammunition against "wicked spirit forces." It's about how Jehovah protects the righteous, those who keep his commandments, and is figuratively, a place of refuge.
At the time this was written shepherds used towers to watch over their flocks, and would herd the flocks into the towers for protection. Also at that time, the name of YHWH was not uttered out of respect for the divine name. The average Hebrew was probably not using it as a talisman to repel demons. Just my opinion.
The Witnesses have an unhealthy obsession with wicked spirits (as well as the name Jehovah). They use this as a mechanism to keep you studying with them... if you stop, you will have demon attacks, so say this magical name and they will flee. Anything that keeps you from getting baptized is the demons fault, and anything bad that happens after you're baptized is the demons fault, too. It's control through fear, and a copout to avoid taking any personal responsibility for their lives. It's very sad and very effective.
What's interesting is that the Hebrew scriptures don't really mention demons or demon attacks, though Jehovah cruelly allowed Satan to mess with Job. The demons were busiest possessing people when Jesus was on the scene. Later, his apostles were able to drive out demons with the aid of the Holy Spirit sent to them by Jesus. Jehovah did not figure in.
BTW, Jesus didn't call on Jehovah, he used Abba, Father.

This "shoot the messenger" hijacking happens all the time here... and it's TIRING.
A Christian believer makes a statement about WT doctrine... then non-believers jump in and attack his/her belief in God/Jesus or the bible.
Perry was making a point about Jesus addressed to lurkers, most of whom are JW's who believe in Jesus and will be attending the Memorial in a few weeks. He was trying to open their minds to the basis of a ceremony whereby millions earth wide openly reject the religious figure who supposedly founded their belief system.
So sorry so many of you missed that! Perry was carrying over a timely point made by another poster, and this thread could have helped active Witnesses or those with doubts see the Memorial as what the other poster described, a "showy display" and a "publicity stunt."
If you want to discuss the WT's rejection of Christ at the upcoming Memorial, and educate a few lurkers along the way, great! You need not be a believer to do so; the Watchtower has mucked it up very well on their own.
If you want to argue the very existence of God/Jesus, simple: Start another thread.
But why derail this one, shoot the messenger, and turn away the audience (JW lurkers) it was intended for?

No, LT, I never suggested that. I was giving an example of how a "worldly" person "could be" treated in a child endangerment situation, when disregarding a parent's instructions.
And, IMO, and from my personal experience, this is a child endangerment situation. The dad, unfortunately, doesn't understand that (yet).
You're good to offer to give him a call and explain things more rationally.
