the end of 1986 i moved from my hometown of portland oregon to the big city of seattle.. it was 1987 and some new friends from that summer (met sailboat racing on puget sound) called and said they had permits and were going christmas tree hunting, did i want to come along.
yeah, of course.

I remember my first x-mas too (14 yrs ago). I didn't have any x-mas ornaments and not much $$ to buy them, so my son went out and collected pine cones, then we painted the tips white and glued red bows to the top. We used these to decorate the tree - it turned out great. I look back at that first x-mas with very fond memories.
honestly, are you a better person now or were you a "better" person when you were a jw?
I am more free thinking/objective and less judgmental. But other than that, it was not leaving the JW's that really made me a better person. It was learning what true christianity meant that made me a better person. Learning that all individuals are important, regardless of their religious beliefs, and learning that I can and SHOULD make work to make this world a better place - not always just "waiting on Jehovah" and the "new system".

we are doing fine, just really busy living life.. well, last saturday i was out at the markets with a friend (thank goodness).
when i got home mr bliss informed me that a servant brought the co around to our place for a 'friendly' visit.
This is one way in which it's nice to be DF'd. I have no worries about being "caught" at anything.
I have lights on my house (lots of them), a huge christmas tree, decorations, and no worries when I run into 'dubs at the store while my basket is filled with christmas wrap and eggnog.
i was talking with my mom the other day and we got on the subject of my father's funeral.
it old her that one of the reasons my son did not ever want to go back to the kh was because of how i was shunned, even at my dad's own funeral.. she said "i know, he just doesn't understand" - i replied "no - he knows why - he just doesn't believe that's what jesus would have wanted".
she had no response to that.

it's been reported to us that two elders burst in to a sda church service about a month ago seeking to trap a witness man there.
the man, a witness for 14 years, had become disillusioned with the affairs of the wts in australia after viewing the "sunday" program on channel nine which exposed the cover-up of paedophilia in the witness movement.
I also know that Elders took turns sitting in front of a single sisters house trying to catch her in the act of fornicating by allowing a worldly boyfriend in her house without a chaperon in attendance. This went on for weeks.
Too bad they thought spending time "staking out a weak one" was well spent. I think it would have been better to spend their time trying to help someone - perhaps inviting her to dinner and encouraging her instead of trying to hang her!
i saw this the other day and really like the sentiment.

...so i just found out.
apparently, the last time my son went to the kh with his grandma (which was quite some time ago), a couple different brothers asked him to study and he turned them down.
not suprising - but what did suprise me is that my mom said the brothers then went to her to talk with her about it.

Not suprising - but what DID suprise me is that my mom said the brothers then went to her to talk with her about it. Now - what exactly did they think Grandma could do?! She told them to leave it alone and don't push him (that suprised me also!).
But I'm a little puzzled - how exactly did they think getting Grandma involved would help? At the time this happened he was still under 18 yrs old, and they never did ask ME for permission. They would not have been allowed in my home and I would have had no problem telling them so. It never ceases to amaze me how much power they THINK they have. Talk about living in their "own little world".
i think i need a time out.
i feel like whatever contributions i may make to this board are being outweighed by the emotional upheaval participating is causing me.
i've been taking things way too personally lately, letting posters i don't know and don't particularly care about, hurt my feelings badly.

my son answered the door this morning.
the couple that my mr.horton and i had been studying with when we were considering going back to the truth finally got ahold of him.

When my son was little my mom went so far as to show up at his school (without my knowledge) and tell his teacher that he didn't celebrate holidays . Thank goodness the teacher called me to confirm and I was able to set the record straight!
I was scared to be tough about it for a long time because I didn't want to loose those few precious relationships I had - but in the end, I realized that my children were much more important. It took some serious talks with my parents (and they didn't like what I had to say) - but they finally backed off. It was either that - or they could not see their grandson any longer.
i'm thinking of telling my mother i can't talk to her anymore sine i don't agree with how she is conducting her life.
occasionally, i'll meet up with her and my jw aunt (they work together) with both kids in the car.
my aunt will come over to check out my baby but completely pretend that i'm not even there.

I've dealt with the same thing with my family (mom & brothers). My husband finally put his foot down - for which I'm glad because I was not yet at that point where I needed to be. He said my relationship with my family was up to me - but they were NOT allowed in our home if they would treat me that way because that also showed disrespect to him.
My mom is coming around and speaks to me more. I haven't spoken to my brothers in years - good riddance! In the end - I'm satisfied that we have accomplished what is most important - teaching our children how important it is to love and protect themselves and their own families when they grow up.
