I never did "street witnessing" when I was a dub. Did anyone actually have someone approach them to get literature?

Street Witnessing
by parlay ini've noticed in my area (ny metro) that jw's count time doing "street witnessing".. do you see the same in your area?.
sitting on benches drinking coffee counting time.
standing on corners laughing and conversating among themselves as people walk right by.. if they do acknowledge a passerby, it's a last minute casual holding out of a magazine or tract.

Strange but TRUE
by KW13 inha ha i was laughing just now, had a strange memory.. when stepdad was away and/or when mum was playing the male role of jw head of household she used to cover her head.
anything...a hat, a scarf, tea towel (no lie!!)..
this was i think from the reasoning book or something, but yeh...covering her head out of respect for jehovah.

My sister was a regular pioneer and remember her putting on the head covering when no brothers showed up to meet for field service.
Thanks for the funny memory!

How has the site helped you?
by KW13 ini'd already left the jw's for personal reasons but i knew there was more to the story.
this site helped me clarify just what the wbt society are.
research is important and with this place as a resource i could learn of 607, the british musuem stuff, un scandal e.t.c and even though the jw's say its all lies, if you look yourself its there to see.. jw's label people here as apostates, my mum says avoid the apostates, they are bitter.

I think its great to share stories and interact with people who I have a common bond with.
Who else would believe that my mom would have my sisters and I scour every garage sale we ever went to making sure there were no demonic symbols or influences before we would be allowed to purchase something?
Who else would believe that a bunch of old farts in Brooklyn can tell you what to do, when to do it, and how to do it . . even in the bedroom?
Who else would believe that your parents and family would shun you?

The rudeness of people
by greendawn inwhat were some rude things people said or did to you?
i remember once this guy who farted loudly several times in quick succession and then apologised to those present in the room by saying: oh had some coke that's where the gases came from, don't worry they are not the smelly meaty ones.

I work out at the YMCA three times a week and I cannot stand it when people come in, sit down on a piece of equipment and then proceed to have a 10-15 minute conversation with someone. If you want to talk, get up off the equipment so that someone else can use it.
I also hate it when I'm next to someone on the eliptical machine and they are yacking on their cell phone. There is a "no cell phone" rule in the fitness center but none of the instructors seem to enforce the rule.
Ok, that felt good to vent!

You mean to tell me, normal people don't get married at 17 or 18?
by free2beme inas a witness, most if not all of my friends were married by 18, with many woman married by 17. it was so normal, that when i left the religion and met all these people married in their 20's and later, that it seemed like they were starting late.
i actually was a late person in getting married, i was 23. i remember being one of the few people my age in the congregation, not married yet.
i actually remember thinking, where am i going to find someone to marry, that is not yet taken.

I was a third generation dub. My mom got married at 16, my two sisters married at 16 (one is divorced). My parents let both of my sisters quit school in order to get married. I got married at 19 (old in my family). I only did it because I wanted to have sex. I knew my ex-husband for exactly 11 months before I married him. He lived about an hour away from me so how much alone time do you think we spent together? NONE. How are you to supposed to get to know someone when you only see them in groups? Of course he put on a good show (until after we were married, then I got to know the real him).
I felt it was unfair that I had to spend the rest of my life with someone I didn't know or love so I left. I gave up everything for the freedom I have now. Don't regret it at all.

Sleeping at assemblies and conventions
by free2beme inmy in-laws still attend meetings and defend the faith to the best of their limited ability.
i saw limited, as their understanding of the faith ended somewhere around the 1980's and when you bring up new understanding, they think it might be apostate and do not listen.
there not alone, trust me, several witnesses do not grasp the changes.
