How about the companies that do Bethel tours or arrange for Bible Group Tours. The best was when a group of people who found out where the international convention was going to be asked a JW travel agent to book the trip for them (I think there were 5 families w/ kids and all, so around 12 or 13 people) and some how the WTBTS found out about it and sent the JW travel agent a letter telling her to cease and desist and cc'd her PO. Even though she was not advertising it as a WTBTS sponsored event, they were pissed that she was making money off of it. They told her in the letter that she was "taking the lead where a sister should not be taking the lead". Can I just say this was really what caused my first step out the door. Don't they make enough off the backs of all the self-righteous bros/sis, they have to threaten a single sister who was a travel agent that they would consider her a jezebel influence if she did not respect the elders and the org and their wise direction. She did what they asked because "even though it did not make sense to her, it was Jah's will" WTF!!!!

Listen, there's a high power atty that I know of that hires only illegal aliens in order to pay low wages. The guy runs a not-for-profit company and it is almost solely staffed w/ people who do not have green cards. The most interesting thing is that the atty also knew that some of these people had criminal backgrounds, but that was another way for him to have control over them. The most upsetting thing was that one person in particular had 3 DUIs (w/ one being pretty serious w/ injuries to the other party) and the atty got him off. Do I hold the illegal alien at greater responsibility then the rat of an atty. NO. I hold the atty who is making a lot of money thru his NFP; keeping this person as a slave because he knows his nutz are being kept by this atty and the court system for allowing the atty to use his connections to get the guy off of 3 DUIs all the while not being a citizen of the county. Let's not act like Americans are not making money off of this whole thing as well.

Really I think it is a catch 22. You have people who don't want to have to pay proper wages and proper insurance/taxes whatever, so they are willing to pay cash, but much less then would be normally pay. You have a group of people who are trying to "better" their lives but they have come into the country illegally and cannot get a proper job. Of course they are going to get dumped on as a people, right or wrong this is what happens to illegal workers for any country. However, there are laws that should be abided by on both sides. To the person who feels it is acceptable to take advantage of another human being - shame on them. To the person who is trying to circumvent the system and comes in illegally - shame on them.
Listen I tried to get a working visa for Australia because I loved the country so much I never wanted to leave. They said to me, sorry chick, you got noth'n we want, come back if you become a teacher, nurse, etc. They did not want me and I did not want to try and stay in a country illegally. So I returned to the States. I could have gone back to school and gotten another degree, one that would have allowed me to possibly live in NSW like I wanted, but obviously I did not want it bad enough, so here I am A DUMB YANKEE, shaking my head at the prez and paying an ungodly amount in property taxes.

Pink slips at Bethel
by beavis indoes anyone still have any friends at bethel?
it seems that there is a massive layoff at bethel in all three american complexes.
the layoff is supposed to affect everyone between the ages of 35-50 or maybe 60. i feel sorry for persons who chose to stay there, they gave up going to college, possible job offers or making a decent amount of money, having children, the list can go on and on.

Wow that is really bad because that would assume that the people they are letting go are lifers. They came in early and have stayed, thinking they would be there till the NS. Isn't there an age limit for entry, like the US military? Isn't like 18 to 30 or something. How harsh is that, to get canned after serving your time and thinking you were going to be there forever.

Could a Baptism be Null and Void based on Circumstances?
by Good Girl or Bad Girl? inwhat if you get baptized as a minor?
does it really legally hold up?
or how about it if your baptism has basically felt like a fraud to you because you did it for the wrong reasons?

Courts generally view religion as a private club that you are a member to. You are subject to the club rules. Only if the club violates state or federal law will the courts get involved. If you look at lawsuits against the WTBTS you will see w/ regard to df or da'ing a person, changes were due to "right to privacy" issues which were deemed a violation of certain rights of individuals under state law and that is why they no longer state specifically why someone was df'd or da'd and most likely why they are again starting to change their policies. However, every state has different laws. If you can find a local rule or state law that allows you to maintain your own files and that someone or something cannot maintain a file on you without your written permission, they can keep your pub card and there is nothing you can do about. You can ask for a copy of it, but again that does you little good.

Bird of a Feather
by looking_glass ini have a number of friends whose family members are different religions, but a bit over the top as much as jws.
it seems to me that these families also want to discuss religion but my friends and i do not care.
do you find that you have gravitated to peers who have similar backgrounds and/or family experiences as you regardless of their religious affiliation.

Yeah it seems that way. Americans cannot do anything in a normal way, it's got to be over the top.

Shunned Father - I have a couple of questions because I am confused.
Your earlier threads suggested that you were looking at obtaining legal counsel that specializes in class actions/torts. Were you unable to secure legal counsel? If so, did they not take the case on a contingency basis? I know you are in Canada, so the set up may be different.
You also mentioned that the doc changed his position from your original conversation and then what he represented to the court. Were no depositions taken? Was there nothing in writing as to this man's medical opinion?

That would make sense. It was a come to Jesus moment for a lot of people in the US. Probably a lot of young people were frightened by it and needed some kind of comfort. My thing is just that (and maybe this is because of my background) I don't want to have a heated discussion regarding the Bible. But people find it necessary not to "agree to disagree" but rather try to bring you to their understanding. So I end up just sitting there until they are done talking and then try and change the subject. Still drives me nuts, regardless of the reason or the stats as to why it is happening. Arrrggghhh.
