yes it is true. in some companies they are starting to "random" test for smokers because they found that people were lying saying they were not smokers but in fact were, which drives up the cost of insurance for the corporations the individual works for.

Life after JW
by Mr. Rebel8 inas you all know from my introduction, i'm not a former jw.
i was raised rc, though like ever good rc, i got to church no more than twice a year (christmas and easter).
if there was a wedding or a funeral that year, i generally skip one or both of the holidays to boot.

I have wondered the same thing ... if people went elsewhere. It appears from reading some posts that ex-JWs have moved to other religions.
As for me, myself and I - I don't believe in organized religion and thus, have not turned to anything else.

Hello Terri, I am not from England but I know some British expressions, does that count.
As for being raised a JW, been there done that. Regular pioneered, ditto. Served where the need was greater, blah, blah, blah - typical strong JW past.
As for leaving, numerous things caused my gradual fade. I don't hate the religion or anyone in it. I feel sorry for them. I really do.
I went to college and minored in psychology and that is probably what helped me the most. I also study theology and realized that JWs are not the only ones who blindly follow what is told to them. History proves it out that it has happened and will continue to happen thru out the ages.
I agree with the theory that behind anger is fear. I refuse to let anyone or any thing cause me to be angry or fearful.
In the States there are support groups for people who have left fundamentalist religions and are trying to get their lives back together. I don't know about England, but my guess would be that you guys have the same thing there. Call any local university that teaches psychology, they usually have resources to put you in contact with these types of groups. If you are thinking of going to school to be a therapist, most likely this same university would be able to put you in touch with mentors that would be able to assist you in reaching your ultimate goal.
I am glad to hear that you are happy and content in your life. You certainly sound like an example to lead by. Much success in your upcoming enveadors.

The fallout and the pain
by lola28 ini got an email back from an elder this morning and it looks like the boe is going to treat my email as a letter of disassociation.
he said he was sad but would forward my email to the congregation that currently has my publishers card.
this wonderful elder also took the liberty of calling a brother that im really close to and told him about my email, he also sent him a copy (this brother is not an elder!).

In order to claim a privilege you have to assert it first. So any time anyone sends something to the elders, you need to state in bold letters PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL - CLERGY PRIVILEGE and then I would add further, not to be reproduced in any form and/or fashion, whether by copy or by verbal reproduction without the prior written consent of author.
If people want to keep things quiet, you should look up your state and its laws regarding clergy privilege and then identify anything you send to the elders as such. Again, you cannot claim a privilege unless you assert it first.

Lola, did you label your letter confidential or clergy privilege? If so, it is a violation of privilege and you should contact those jokers and tell them if they forward your letter to anyone else and or discuss anything within the letter, they will be violating Caesar's law so knock it off.

Pink slips at Bethel
by beavis indoes anyone still have any friends at bethel?
it seems that there is a massive layoff at bethel in all three american complexes.
the layoff is supposed to affect everyone between the ages of 35-50 or maybe 60. i feel sorry for persons who chose to stay there, they gave up going to college, possible job offers or making a decent amount of money, having children, the list can go on and on.

My guess is that the New York State Workmen's Compensation Board would have the pleadings filed in this matter. However, you will be required to have a password and login to obtain records. I do not have access to that state's materials.
According to Pacer (court search engine) there have been no appeals filed on behalf of the WTBTS in the Upton case. However, as I am not familiar with how the NY labor relations board works, I don't know if they have an internal appeal process to go thru prior to going up to the next level. That being the case, the WTBTS may have filed an appeal. I just don't know for certain.
I noted on the other thread that referenced this matter, someone said that they knew Brenda and her husband, Michael, maybe if that person could speak up and let us know if the matter has been appealed or not.
Keep in mind, you only have so many days to appeal a deicison otherwise your appeal is barred. Since this happened in January of this year, my guess is that they did not appeal and that the case is settled. I think that further explains the mass lay-offs.
Again, I respect anyone who questions what is happening and the need to see it in print. Go to Google and do an advanced search w/ the words Workers' Compensation Law Judge Stephen Goldstein and you will see the various links and articles to the ruling.

Amnesian - yup, my mom is a JW, second gen. But we all have big mouths in our family. A bunch of hot headed Irish folk. The woman may only stand five feet but her mouth is what takes up the most of that space. When I was a kid it embarassed the heck out of me, now I just laugh. She tells it like she sees it.
But you have to understand, my mother is of the age group that is constantly afraid that her job is going to lay her off and she will be out of a job. That being the case, she is very sympathetic towards those who are leaving because they are most likely in their 40's and/or 50's. She really feels for them.

I understands Oroborus' need for proof. I think that it is noble to want to see something in print considering everything that we have fell for in the past with little proof.
I do believe what was reported here first and confirmed by my mom after her recent visit to the HQ. She mentioned the old couple that made Bethel their career and now they rightfully feel that the HQ's should take care of them. This couple did not have kids, they did not build a nest egg, they served as missionaries and then returned to do traveling work and then went to work for Bethel. They were and are lifers.
Just like the people who worked for Enron who thought that they were building up a nest egg only to find that others got rich off of them. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that the FDS are getting rich off of people, I think they get a charge out of being on the board, so power makes them wealthy, not money.
But what I am saying is that years ago when the young guys entered Bethel, it was not to be a temporary thing but a commitment for a long term future. When the guys left Bethel, people always acted as if it was a sad thing. So for those people who have been there 20 odd years, this sucks for them. My heart goes out to those people, I am sure they are wondering where their place is and questioning things. But how horrible to question everything you have done and believed in for 20 odd years. They lived in a bubble and now that bubble has burst. That has got to be tough.
Again, if someone can get me a name, I will look it up and post what I find. But again, I tried various searches thru various court search engines and I have not come up with anything that comes close to the chiro case.

If someone can give me the plaintiff's name, I will do a search under appellate records and see what I can find. Unfortunately, I tried to do a google search and a broad search thru pacer and came up w/ nothing. Do you know if the case was filed before the Labor Board or possibly the industrial commission, in that case, those records are not accessible thru pacer. If I find it I will post it.
