I thought it was quite clear to everyone that all bad things come from Satan and his angels. All good comes from Jehovah. I hope that clears any questions up that you might have.

okay - just to show how naive i am as to "wordly" things like smoking - i have a question.
why do people bang their cigarette pack against their hand before opening a new pack???????
moving the tabacco or something????
Many, many years ago when I was young, I smoked, and the only rememberance I have of tapping the cigarette pack against the hand is to force a cigarette out of the pack through a small opening on the end of the pack. Tap, tap and a cig comes out and you grab it. Neat huh?
I hope this furthers your worldly knowledge.

one of the most signficant influences that helped me get free from the organization is the novels of ayn rand.
i had a very long fade and at some point during my "fade" i discoverved any rand.
i have read "the fountainhead" and "atlas shrugged" numerous times.
Not Ayn Rand quotes but a few I've picked up here and there mainly from ex-mormon sources:
"It's fairly easy for an intelligent person to select the few facts that support a false idea, and to seem convincing, especially to people who are predisposed to believe the idea anyway. This assertion assumes no dishonesty or insincerity on the part of the scholar. In fact, it is a very common mistake when one is set on a particular conclusion before examining the evidence. People naturally see what they want to see, making it easy to ignore the 95% of the data that refutes the desired conclusion. It happens to the best of us."
"Human beings have what seems to be a pathological need to force their view of the world onto other people, and to marginalize them if they don't accept it"........Robert Kirby of the Salt Lake Tribune
"While testimonies of the truth may be like plants that need to be watered with constant study and prayer, beliefs in false systems of religion are also like plants, that need similar care lest the truth should sway you."

what evidence is there of rutherford's legal training?
answer: rutherford used throughout his life the words "to wit" in his talks, speeches, and watchtower articles!.
i do not know of anyone else who used those words to that extent.
VM44: "Actually, what does "to wit" mean?"
I was curious about that so looked in the dictionary.
To wit: to know, that is to say.

mindless fun part (ii) .
.
mine is - west side story followed in second place by the very first star wars.
I'm surprized at the list of favorite movies. No one besides myself has mentioned, "Gone With the Wind." Has anyone here seen the movie?
Of course I'm half way as old as the hills, maybe that movie is too far back for anyone to know anything about it.

The greatest movie ever made was, "Gone With the Wind". A basically true life story, though slightly over done, that ends more true to life than the common movie. In other words, everyone does not end up being happy for the rest of their life.

a good friend of mine is a former jw.
she is married to an active jw and her children are still jws.
her husband has demanded that they discuss why she is no longer willing to go to meetings, etc... she is wondering what subject would be the best to approach him with first.
I don't think anyone has an obligation to prove the cult is wrong. The cult has the obligation to prove it self true. If I were leaving a cult I think I would explain that the evidence provided to prove it's self true has failed to convince me and further solid evidence is required. Until then I remain unconvinced.

PS A person doesn't decide to either believe or not believe in a cult or a religion, that comes automatically with the knowledge that is gained or provided. I can't decide one day to start believing in my parent's Mormon religion, I know it's a load of manure. If the facts are lacking then the choice is already made.
.
if jesus only 'had to die' to redeem the whole human race, why then did he have to be tortured to death?.
was that really necessary, and what sick mind decreed that it was necessary?
Why? Darned good question. To hang someone up and let them stay there until they are dead is a typical idea that turns me from Bible based religions. If Jesus is killed then people can be forgiven for their sins, what an idea! There are plenty of things in the OT, such as, kill, kill, kill that is inspired or caused by the most highest of Gods that the killing of Jesus is just another minor example of God's love for us people.

say something philosophical and deep so that we can all benefit from what you're going to say.
My two favorites:
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." - Bertrand Russell
And:
"It's fairly easy for an intelligent person to select the few facts that support a false idea, and to seem convincing, especially to people who are predisposed to believe the idea anyway. This assetion assumes no dishonesty or insincerity on the part of the scholar. In fact, it is a very common mistake when one is set on a particular conclusion before examining the evidence. I apply both quotes to my fanatical JW and Mormon sides of the family. It could apply to anyone who are absolutely sure of themselves.

i am looking for my grandfather that i have never met before.
his name is robert funk.
my dad learned his fathers name when he applied for his social security.
averyniceguy, have you tried geneaology web sites? If Robert Funk was 22 years old in 1941 he would be close to 90 now and could very well be dead.
I went to www.familysearch.com and found at least one person who could almost qualify:
Robert Paul FUNK - Ancestral File
Gender: M Birth/Christening: 11 May 1923 Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Ca
You could try it and look for others who may be of interest.
mckay PS In fact you can click on Robert's name above and bring up more info.
