What's funny is that even the Society preaches a constant mantra of "get it in writing." Guess that whole policy of targeting the ignorant and keeping them that way isn't working out so well.

Has a “brother” ever screwed you?
by noontide ini was always very cautious with worldly people but of course i trusted everyone in the congregation 100%.
i trusted someone from the congregation with a business deal and got raked over the coals.
its a long and frustrating story, suffice it to say it cost me a lot of anguish, time and money.

Do the members pay for the litterature?
by Hellrider ini am discussing something on the "discussion"-part of wikipedia (on jehovahs witnesses) in my country.
a person there claims that the witnesses pays nothing for the litterature they receive from the watchtower.
is this true?

That is correct, literature is distributed on a voluntary donation basis. Donations for the worldwide work are accepted both from congregation publishers and from interested ones in the field.
This changed back in the 90's when the Witnesses didn't want to pay taxes (there was a big hoohaa that involved the Society filing an amicus brief in a case with Jimmy Swaggart as the defendant!). Swaggart lost the case. The Witnesses instantly went over to a donation basis, and there was a "nudge nudge wink wink" kind of flavor to it where they thought that publishers would still donate just as much, since they knew what they'd been paying for it before.
Didn't work out that way. This is one of the reasons that many exJW's theorize that there's a cash flow problem at the Society. -

Marriage vows: What the...?
by under_believer ini, [name], do take you, [name], to be my lawfully wedded [husband/wife], to love, honor [bride: and deeply respect], for as long as we both shall live together on earth under god's marital arrangement.. ummm... what?
so romantic, so meaningful.
is it just me, or is that marriage vow right out of the frickin' twilight zone?

ALSO: How tired did you get of hearing that damn Kingdom Song "Shulemite Maiden" played while the bride walked out?

- Lawfully Wedded: Betrays the Witness obsession with appearances. Why is "lawfully" inserted? Of course they're lawfully wedded.
- Deeply Respect: So the husband isn't promising to deeply respect his wife? Does that mean that the Society thinks that husbands shouldn't respect their wives? Of course they don't think that. So why put the difference into the vows? Because they are OBSESSED with the "Christian headship arrangement."
- On Earth: This is a holdover from when there were a lot of "anointed" with a "heavenly hope." The idea was that after you go to heaven, the marriage bonds are broken.
- Under God's Marital Arrangement: This is a reference to the wildly speculative idea that many Witnesses had that after Armageddon, there would be no more marriage. I.E., they'd no longer be under "God's Marital Arrangement."

I don't believe that "Stockholm Syndrome" is an acceptable way to describe the mental processes of a ten year old child who is practically raised by someone for almost half their life.

Did You Shun Someone?
by Country Girl inhow did you feel when you met the person in public that you were shunning?
what were you thinking as you were shunning the person?
did you think about what other witnesses were thinking if you did not want to shun the person?

Please, give me a break.
If anything, ex-JW's are honorary Natascha Kampusches. -

Did anyone really buy into the "Universal Sovereignty" issue?
by loli ini am new to the forum, but not new to jw indoctrination.
even as a child, i would ask myself, "why would the almighty creator need to prove anything to anyone, including him/her/itself?
really, one of the few scriptures that i do actually agree with is that 'god is love.

I continually bring this up to Witnesses I know. The answer is always that the "Universal Sovereignty" issue is being settled because of all of the spirit creatures, the angels.
