You should check out Studio 60.
guys, i love the tv show "house".
hugh laurie is perfect in the role, great supporting actors, deep character development.
the plotlines are a little formulaic, but all the dialog and character interaction makes it ok. .

i got a phone call from a person that i gave my phone # to.
and this person said that gays are not welcome here and this is not what this board was really about.
i told them that this is only one part of the crap that the wts did to people and that we are people too.
Man after this whole thing blew up with woza (iza?) I'm starting to wonder if he is actually hambeak's secret admirer who called him on the telephone.

We can't watch it anymore, either. It's just too... it just makes us feel bad to watch it. I already had serious concerns about how every episode plays out with all of the suspense and unpredictability of a Hardy Boys novel, but towards the end of when we were watching my wife and I just finished each episode with a black, wasted feeling.
It's not good TV. I hate to bust out a JW-ism but it's not upbuilding. And I don't even really NEED upbuilding but this show is actively the opposite of upbuilding. It's downtrodding.
due to funkyderek i have come to the decision to leave this board.
when i posted on the current gay thread in a way that i thought would stimulate thinking and lighten up the seriosness of the thread and have a laugh, he and others put me down publically labelling me.
so i find it difficult now to continue posting knowing that someone has influenced others into thinking that i'm not worthy of being here because my phrasing and spelling is bad and that i'm apparently a "hyporite".
Don't be such a huge baby. Use your words and work out your differences with other people--or ignore them.
If that response of his is really going to make you leave, then good riddance. On the other hand, if you are able to make the right choice and stick around despite the fact that someone disagrees with (or *gasp* insults) you, then please stay--this forum (and for that matter the world at large) can use more people like that.

did anyone read the recent wts "special article" about creation and evolution?
i read it and fell of my freaking seat.
get this, the wts now believes (and yes, they want everyone to agree or else) that god created the universe billions of years ago and that nothing was created in six days as shown in genesis!.
The one new thing I saw in that magazine was that they're now actually using the phrase "Intelligent Design." Kinda late to the party, but interesting to see them hitch their cart to that particular politically-charged horse.

Simon won't do anything about it unless this person makes a nuisance of himself here on JWD. It's not Simon's job to monitor people's behavior off the board. :)
hambeak, it doesn't look like you need any more encouragement, but please throw my 2c into the "contribution box." Please stick around. I've always found your posts to be entertaining and informative.
wozadummy, please do a bit of research about your preconceptions about the homosexual nature/nurture debate. You may have to actually (gasp) read up on it or talk to some gay people. I think you'll come out on the other side of this research a better person than you appear to be now.
Everyone else (and especially, as ever, Decki), thanks for a great, heartwarming thread full of support and welcome.
wanderer reminded me of an answer that i frequently get when confronting dubs with information obtained through the internet.
even if it's a scan of a wts publication, the typical dub seems to be well schooled in refusing to give any credibilty to anything that comes from a website other than watchtower.org.
has anyone had any luck finding more "credible" sources for info?
First of all, most Witnesses can be talked into accepting information from the evil Internet, as long as you tell them WHERE on the Internet it came from. For example, the United Nations website could be reliably assumed to have information about UN membership.
If they're going to argue that point, you're probably wasting your time.
Other sources--the public library system often has Witness publications, including old ones, in it. Various Witnesses have personal libraries that contain older publications. There is always the Watchtower Library CD-ROM, an image of which you can probably still download from somewhere. And lastly if you or someone you know has access to a Kingdom Hall library, there is usually a wealth of ridiculous old Studies In the Scriptures and other crap in there you can just pull right out and point to, if you have your spiel rehearsed.
i agree that everyone should have the right to practice thier own religion, as long as it doesn't interfere with another person right to privacy and right to not be harassed in their own home by those who feel they have the better religion.. the door to door work of jws is harassment, when you consider that they call for the most part in the morning, univited to talk about why there religion is the right one and often have very bad things to say about other belief systems, which has the potential of disturbing the peace.
.
No.
As much as I despise the door to door work, I see no way of outlawing it, at least in the US, that is consistent with the First Amendment of the Constitution.
I may hate what they say, and how they say it, but I'll defend their right to do so to the end of my days.
if i had a kid who was being bullied... they better tie me up... there's no telling what i might do to the bullies.
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23375378-details/boy%2c+13%2c+hangs+himself+after+bullies+pelt+him+with+food/article.doalthough they found some evidence of bullying, there was nothing that would justify criminal action.. this is the problem.
bullying is not seen as a crime!
I was bullied and teased mercilessly from about the third grade through the 10th grade. I had clothes ripped, was punched, hit, teased, called names, spit on, had food thrown at me, you name it. I have literally seen it all.
Why? I was very small for my age. I was bookish and nerdy, and terrible at sports. My parents, though they could afford good clothes, chose to shop at the Good Will (an American used clothing and thrift store) instead. I was a Witness and didn't celebrate holidays or do innumerable other things the other kids did on a daily basis, like salute the flag.
My parents did absolutely nothing to stand up for or protect me. For one they're both non-confrontational wimps; and for another they (especially my mom) just saw it as inevitable persecution that she couldn't prevent if she wanted to; another sign of the times.
The teachers did absolutely nothing to stand up for or protect me. Teachers are worthless for preventing bullying. If they intervene, they can even make it worse. Telling the teacher is like a death sentence. I know because I tried.
The other students did absolutely nothing to stand up for or protect me. Standing up for a kid like that is social suicide and an invitation to bully. That kid is pitiable; but you don't want to be like him, not for a million dollars.
My older brother did absolutely nothing to stand up for or protect me; I had no older brother. I was the oldest.
God did absolutely nothing to stand up for or protect me, in spite of fervent, tearful prayer by an honest true believer. Why this is I leave for you to decide. At the time I decided it was because this was a test I had to face. Now I think it's because he doesn't exist.
I started the 9th grade the smallest kid in high school. Throughout the ninth grade, I faced perhaps the most violent and evil persecution of my entire school career. In wood shop, my projects were cut up on a band saw after I'd invested weeks (and money) into them. My coat was ripped up. I was thrown into the center of rings of other children against my will, to fight some other loser. Following my parent's, and the Society's advice, I always tried to run away from these fights, which got me labeled a coward.
During the 9th grade I had an enormous growth spurt. I started it the smallest, with a high-pitched child's voice. I ended it among the tallest; my voice finally changed; I had hair, etc.
At the start of the 10th grade, the same kids who gave me such hell in the 9th wanted to start up their games again. The first thing that one of these kids said to me, on the first day of school, was "We're gonna hurt you this year."
I was in this class that had high benches facing the walls of the classroom, with tall backless stools that everyone sat on. I was walking by one of these kids and he either said something to me, or stabbed me with his pencil, or kicked me. I don't remember. What I do remember is that I snapped. I grabbed the hair at the top of his had with one hand, and put the other on his chest, and with every ounce of strength I possessed I slammed him to the ground. His head made an audible smacking noise. The wind was knocked out of him and he had trouble breathing. He was stunned.
The teacher grabbed us both by the ears and dragged us out of the classroom. It was his word against mine; and I appeared to be the aggressor. I got a day's suspension. It was the best day of my life.
After that they never bothered me again. Literally. I was bigger than most (but not all) of them. I was known to have strength--I was known to be a fighter--I was known to be mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore.
My advice is to teach your kids to fight back. Teach them to punch, to hit, to kick. Teach them to take care of themselves, and give them permission to do so. Tell them WHEN to hit. Don't teach them to be bullies--but give them a reserve of strength and dignity to draw on. Teach them to stand up for others and to rally others to the same cause. That's what I'm doing with my son and if he ever gets suspended from school for it I'll back him up every inch of the way and tell him I'm proud of him.
Because I won't make the same mistake my parents did. They failed me. To this day, that fact affects our relationship, and they regret it, and there's NOTHING they can do to take it back.
pretty amusing response from pat robertson to someone who wrote in.
it was striking to me how much his position resembles the witness position; throw in the whole "jehovah" thing and he sounds like a particularly bombastic circuit overseer.. .
check it out at http://www.rightwingwatch.org/2006/11/robertson_says.html.
Oh, hells. I'm sorry. I even searched and everything but I didn't find it.
Mods, can we delete this thread please?
